This 3D animation shows how an abnormal heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation (a-fib or afib), can be restored with electrical cardioversion. This animation shows normal heart rhythm with electrical signals that originate at the SA node. A heart with abnormal signals and atrial fibrillation is shown forming a blood clot which results in a stroke. Next, the steps of the cardioversion procedure are illustrated: the placement of EKG electrodes, the placement of cardioversion paddles, the delivery of shock to the chest and heart, and the restoration of normal electrical signals within the heart.

My mom is 89. She just had this treatment this morning. I could not be there because of work and I don’t think they let you in the hospital anyway due to Covid. My sister said that it went well and she’s already doing much better… Medical science is amazing… Wish I was smart enough to participate.

I've had it twice now .
One time the irregular heartbeat was caused by too much sweating and not enough salts / electrolytes.
Doctor said blot clots will only occur if not treated within 24 hours .
Pardon the pun but my heart goes out to all with irregular heartbeats
Aren’t there people who are constantly in afib? Since when was there a 24 hour window period for blood clots

I've had the cardio shock done 6 times now in a one year period after IV medications failed to correct the high heart rate. At one point they recorded a heart rate of 278! I was dizzy and the procedure worked all 6 times. It was explained to me that each time they shock me, scar tissue builds up and adds to heart damage so ablation is recommended.
I had the ablation. 1 year later and I am going back for another cardio version. Looks like this issue is going to be happening frequently and with no end.

@@whimsy6978 : There was absolutely no sensation of going out. They said we’re putting you to sleep now and the next thing I knew I was waking up after the procedure. I was absolutely terrified with a lifelong phobia of being put to sleep. It was like absolutely nothing. No sense of time passing at all. If anything it was peaceful.

I had cardiac ablation at 39 for my AFib, worked great, off beta blockers until last year. I am now 57 and back on low dose beta blockers due to heart palps associated with hormonal change. Hopefully temporary.

@Astroboy1959 Thanks for sharing. Please ask your doctor if it's ok for you to take a daily aspirin to help prevent blood clots from forming in your atria, which is a risk of atrial fibrillation. These clots pose a risk of stroke if they break free and travel to the brain.

My mother is going to have this procedure done tomorrow morning. She has been in AFIB for a couple of days. Hope this does the trick.
Have had 4 cardioversions (3 in 2020 and 1 in 2021). 2 done with ketamine/fentanyl the other 2 with propofol/fentanyl.
First, third and fourth all worked, the second didn't.
Cardiac ablation done Dec 3/2021. So far so good since then
I've done ablation for this WPW syndrome and after the procedure i only had 1 episode of AF which lasted 25-30 minutes,but it stopped on it's own. After that i was plugged with an ECG holter for a 24-hour monitoring and sometimes the WPW was showing up,sometimes not so it is half-dead right now but it's still there. Point is after the ablation it's been modified so the response time of the WPW is about 400+ms so the speed is rather low i only get some "pumps" in the chest for like a second or something which is nothing. My personal advice is to have the electropsycial study and do the ablation procedure,.
I just had this done, & it worked from the first shock. I wish they did this, the first time I went to the emergency room 6 years ago, because of this same issue. I probably had irregular heart beat for over 15+ years. Before doing this shock treatment, they tried different IV drugs for 3+ days, to see if it convert with out doing this treatment, but it didn't worked. I am also on 2 medications, to keep it from coming back.

I had cardioversion done Jan 11, 2017 for a-fib. Doctor hit me 3 times with 200 joules and it my heart didn't go back into sinus rhythm. On Jan 13, 2017 the second doctor came in and did the cardioversion again. He hit me with 200 joules one time and my heart went back into sinus rhythm. They sedated me with propofol and I didn't know a thing, they only gave me enough to keep me out about 5 or 10 minutes. However 2 days after going back into sinus rhythm it went back into a-fib. They put me on XARELTO 20MG, DIGOXIN 0.125MG, CARVEDILOL 3.125MG and LISINOPRIL 5MG. It seems to be working well BUT, I'm going back in a week or two and I want to try the cardioversion again, hopefully my heart will stay in sinus rhythm this time.

if you have chronic atrial fibrillation, minimally over 2 days...chances are synchronized cardioversion will not offer sustained sinus conversion and medication will be required to manage your A.fib long term. you should definitely be on an anticoagulant prior to conversion...i do see that you are on rivaroxaban

Me too, the anesthesiologist under dosed me so I felt the current travel from chest to back, however I had enough Propofol that while aware of the current and duo to the short duration, I no longer remember the pain. A year later the flutters are back.
I've had it twice now , last one was 3 days ago . Totally painless experience for me
so does this mean you can do anything like exercise or whatever cause it would cause the heart to beat faster wouldn't it? or would that not effect the way the heart beats after its been corrected?
cant u like get cardioablation? i had it but i had a minor case of wolf parkinson white syndrome the burned something away pretty easy for me

I had this exact thing happen to me last Tuesday morning. It was so scary.
I’ve never been operated on. I’m 65 and I’m having this procedure done next month. It’s really good to hear you’re good comments. EDIT: my post op report - everything went well. The doctors were very kind. The intravenous anesthetic knocked me out instantly. There was no fear no sense of fading out into black or being trapped. I was just gone and woke up sometime later with the doctors standing around me in a circle saying Kevin wake up. Everything went OK. I couldn’t believe they’d actually done the procedure already. That was it. Painless and done. A lifelong Phobia tackled!!

@@amberj6760 : basically, no. It changed into a constant fibrillation which is even more dangerous. I just got out of the hospital for my third procedure. They put me on a new medication called Sotalol, which hopefully should do the trick. Thank you for asking.

Hemodynamicaly unstable Afib SVT or atrial flutter is cardioverted. And VT and VFib are defibrillated

What's the difference between cardioversion and defibrillator?
Defibrillator is to get your heart pumping again if it stops. Cardioversion helps your irregular heartbeat to start beating regularly. Hope this helps.

I had this procedure done 5/31/18 they did a TEE echo first. I was converted back into sinus rhythm. I don't know if it was one one try or more. They sedated me with propofol and wasn't aware of anything. Home from the hospital tonight.

I had my surgery to repair my mitral valve two years ago. Doing well. Had the maze procedure to fix the afib. So far no more afib.

No. Unless your home defibrillator has the “sync” button and ECG leads. Defibrillating (sending a shock when the r wave is not occurring) can send you into vfib and kill you.
Yea but what happens when the normal rythm is restored, doesnt this pse more risks of the thrombus to travel out through the aorta? anticoagulant therapy?
I know this is old but for others.
Usually if AF has been present for more than 48 hours, cardioversion wont be performed until after at least 3 weeks of anticoagulant therapy to minimise the risk of stroke and thromboembolism.
In the Uk anyway.

Alex Blanc if you are already on Warfarin or another blood thinner they'll check your INR and do it right away. Or if you have what they call Holiday Heart from drinking too much alcohol they do it without anticoagulation therapy.
I have this same problem, had it my whole life, resent years it's under control, stopped caffeine ,just a little black tea in the morning,no coffee which guarantees a fib reaction in me,no energy drinks ,no alcohol in the evening ,has to be early in the day so your body can process it before bed,or I can't sleep. I take a low dose of metoprolol succ er Dailey,beta blocker, also have to take, melatonin,sleep aids cuz heart drug won't allow me to sleep it blocks melatonin production

@Justin it went very well, so far so good, heart rate is good and is in normal sinus rythym so far still taking Metoporol and Eliquis tho.

@Justin Ok they wanted me to have the Cardioversion done after I went into the ER but I wanted to see if I can get my heart back into rythym on my own by diet meds and treating my sleep apnea but after 2 months my heart was still not in sinus rythym my heart rate was not too bad because Metoporol was helping to control the rate but I was still in Afib because my hearts rythym was still not normal, that’s when I scheduled the Cardio Version which was successful I should have done it when I was in the hospital but like I said so far so good, Hope everything works out for you. What exactly electrical shock does to the heart so it returns to the normal sinus rhythm?
Артур Мудрик in a cardioversion the electrical shock is actually stopping the heart. It automatically restarts again hopefully in normal sinus rhythm. Each individual cardiac cell will beat individually. If you looked at it under microscope you could see one cell beating so the heart will automatically just start beating after it is stopped with cardioversion.

I'm 53 and I just had a cardio vision for the first time all my test came back negative CT x-ray ultrasound even the heart catheter that improved when they ran that up my wrist definitely a weird feeling I don't smoke I haven't drink coffee in about 3-4 weeks they can never answer what happened

I never had it happen. But I was in a good place for me to get a good feel for what I saw on the edge of the heart beat up to the the fast heart beat that she heard this from me her heart went back to normal

Can anyone tell me reasons they went into af in the first place?
I was diagnosed with ADHD, Insomnia, Sleep Apnea and other things. The ADHD and Insomnia medicine was causing my heart to beat extremely fast. I felt as though I was drinking alot of red bull and 6hr energy drinks. I was switched from ADHD to ADD.
My heart has been doing a major flutter type beat...sometimes nothing for months, sometimes several times a day. (like a slow heart beat, then BOOM). I get dizzy and short of breath, then it's over.
My doctor found nothing and act like I am lying. Any videos or...anything on something similar?

PVC, Perfectly normal. There’s different causes but it can just happen. If they’ve found no abnormalities in the heart it’s most likely a one off PVC. It’s when the heart fills with to much blood and pushes it out very hard, causing the boom feeling, I’ve had it and I’m 16, had every cardiac check possible over 4 times, don’t worry too much

Had this done in 2021. Had to do ablations after that as the Cardioversion is simply a way to get your heart rate back into normality...while Ablation actially finds and disintegrates the problematic points in your heart that lead to abnormal rythm

Arnoud, You may want to do some research with the connection of coffee and abnormal heart beats. I doubt coffee caused it.
actually my afib was caused by an overdose of green tea which contains caffeine. Coffee contains caffeine too and likely in higher amounts than green tea.
