I was 8 in '94. I remember vividly my out-of-state aunt calling my mom and saying "Oh my God, they made a movie about Cameron. Except the kid is full-grown Martin Short, and he's obsessed with dinosaurs instead of Batman." Mom rented it, we saw it together, and I have not stopped laughing since. THANK YOU for this absolute treasure of a movie!
It's so great because nobody ever talked like that until this movie. It was hysterical hearing that for the first time. If memory serves, Charles ad-libbed that, but I'm not totally sure.

One of my favorite movies from Martin Short and the topper was Roger Eberts quote …”The movie is so odd, it's almost worth seeing just because we'll never see anything like it again. I hope.”😂🤣🤣🤣😜👍👍👍this is comedic genius at its finest.
Clifford deserved and deserves more respect for its humor: Martin Daniels : Don't worry about Clifford, he'll be fine if you give him a ton of sugar and a book about Hitler.
Saw that film when I was a kid. Even back then, I recognized the uncle as Charles Grodin, thanks to his appearances in "Beethoven" (Brian Levant/1992) and its sequel "Beethoven's 2nd" (Rod Daniel/1993).
My friend had me watch it for the 1st time many years ago. I like the opening scene in the future when he was the priest dealing with bad kids and goes back in flashback to tell his story. Hahaha!!
Clifford is hilarious because of Martin Short and Charles Grodin. This movie would not work if Clifford was played by a child actor. The movie found a following from DVD. It’s one of my favorite all time comedies.
It seems time has been kind to this movie. I can understand why it was dismissed in 94 upon release but I think as Short has gotten better as a comedic actor it opened the door for this to be more appreciated. I’m happy it’s found it’s audience because it’s hilarious.
Absolutely a fun film, loved watching and laughing with my Dad, just shared with my cousin who just could not get enough. Box office numbers do not equal substance, joy or creativity, only good advertising.
"Clifford" is one of the funniest movies of all time! I have loved it since it came out!! A true classic and a must watch!!! ... "I'm Larry The Scary Rex! I'm a scary dinosaur!" 😅
As a kid I didn’t get the humor of it…I also assumed it was the big red dog. “But that’s a GROWN UP! Why do they act like he’s a kid?!” Didn’t hit me until later that he was doing a spot on impression of a kid. Now I can’t help but laugh any time a parent says “I was watching Clifford with my kid the other day” 😂
This is one of those movies that’s so bad and so strange, I actually like it. Kind of like The Room or The Last Dragon. I think Martin Short liked it, too. He should’ve had better success as a leading man, in my view.
I love the mention of "you know, like your middle name" and the implication behind that is hilarious on its own, because I'm thinking "well what the heck is his middle name that Uncle Martin is so opposed to?" - this film is so criminally underrated and for a film that flopped, it's better than 90% of 90s comedies.
In all fairness, the real reason it failed was really due to the financial crisis of its studio Orion Pictures. It was shot in 1990, and when the studio declared Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, every movie Orion had in the pipeline was delayed indefinitely (In fact, in an act of desperation, they sold The Addams Family off to Paramount fearing it would flop, and of course we all know how that turned out). Once they emerged from the bankruptcy, the studio basically burned off every movie in a wide release with very little promotion that lasted 2-3 weeks at best, and this movie was definitely one of the casualties. Thankfully, Clifford has found its audience over the years, and I think we should thank Comedy Central for making sure people would see it. It was always on in the late ‘90s.
Can someone tell Martin short there are actual kids like this including my own and just not quite as big geniuses-and of course we deal Better than the uncle did - we parents appreciate it because-it makes us laugh at our daily issues. (If anyone was a bad guy it was the boss for springing that on him last minute when he had already completed and made plans) There are better ways to deal and ways to soften the blow or outright sacrifice or delay your own priorities oftentimes to make the kid not be quite as angry and vengeful and ballistic which neither the parents nor the uncle had in them
I think that was because as Short said it was too weird for the room in 94 but I feel it has aged well. A lot of that is because it was shot actually before Martin Short did Father of the Bride, Pure Luck, and Captain Ron and of course before Charles Grodin had a brief leading man comeback with Beethoven 1&2. So I think the fact it was shelved a couple years because of studio bankruptcy and at the time we had seen these guys in other popular movies it must have seemed so strange to see this when it first came out. But I think their popularity in other movies has helped us to appreciate it more on home video and streaming. Some movies just have to take time to grow in popularity. Shawshank Redemption was a box office flop that is now one of the most popular beloved films of all time and Clifford seems to have a big cult following now despite being ignored upon release in 94. Some things get better with time.

Easily my favorite 90s comedy movie. 🤣
"Look at me like a human boy" gets me everytime. 😂🤣
Same here! Love that scene
And Clifford’s face with the dead eyes 🤣😂🤣😂
LOOK AT ME LIKE A PERSON.....DONT MESS AROUND WITH ME!
It's so great because nobody ever talked like that until this movie. It was hysterical hearing that for the first time.

This movie is comedy gold to me. I saw it as a child and really believe this movie helped develop my taste in comedy.
I am absolutely in the same boat, definitely shaped mine. I prob saw it at 10 or 11 years old.
Finally, TCM is covering some real cinema!
Well said!

Yeah I agree. It’s a very strange film but it always worked for me. I guess since I saw it as a kid. But even now I still find it hilarious!
Clifford deserved and deserves more respect for its humor:

RIP Charles Grodin (Uncle Martin) 1935 - 2021
He died 10 days after this video was uploaded 😢
Clifford and She-Devil are among my guilty pleasures.
Absolutely! I don't even call them "Guilty Pleasures," they're underrated classics. They're ridiculous, but so entertaining.
Uncle Martin
I like that at the end he compared Clifford to The Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life. Haha. He even smirked as he did it.
I seen this movie on TV and then back in Elementary school in March 2001.
Saw that film when I was a kid. Even back then, I recognized the uncle as Charles Grodin, thanks to his appearances in "Beethoven" (Brian Levant/1992) and its sequel "Beethoven's 2nd" (Rod Daniel/1993).

I have it on Blu-ray. Comedy Central to air this all of the time back in the late 90s early 2000’s.
Absolutely a fun film, loved watching and laughing with my Dad, just shared with my cousin who just could not get enough. Box office numbers do not equal substance, joy or creativity, only good advertising.
I wish this interview was longer😭❤

Many parents can really relate to Clifford

I've seen Clifford a hundred times, and I'm not a burned out stoner. Also, I don't care for father of the bride.
These comments make me weep for humanity.

If I met Martin Short in person, sure I'd geek out over Innerspace, what a flick:)
