Montana Rail Link: Footprints of the Northern Pacific

  • The Northern Pacific's route through Montana took the railroad west from Billings to Livingston, over the grade of Bozeman Pass, through Lombard Canyon to Helena, over Mullan Pass and west toward Missoula and Sandpoint, ID. The railroad became a Burlington Northern property in 1970 and was sold to newly formed Montana Rail Link in 1992.
    Today, MRL keeps the line hopping by running overhead BNSF traffic in addition to its variety of short and long distance locals. On a trip in July, 2014, I ventured across the MRL system from Laurel, MT, ten miles west of Billings, over both Bozeman and Mullan Passes, to Garrison, Jens and Drummond. BNSF traffic is quite affluent on this line, and heavy trains get MRL helpers on both grades. MRLs SD70ACes sound fantastic working up the grades. Lots of older BNSF power is seen, including warbonnets and EMDs. This is a true trip back to a time not too long ago. A time no longer a reality, but proudly captured on video for all to see!
    Enjoy, subscribe and thanks for watching!!

    Amazing vid. It’s really interesting to see Mrl aces 4400, 4401 and 4403 working locals bc they have been assigned to helper service here in Livingston for a while now. Again great video

    The paint scheme on the MRL stuff has always been one of my favorites, along with the red white and blue scheme that BC Rail has used along with their newer dark blue with silver trim scheme.

    Actually, BN only leased the line to MRL and it was in 1987, not 1992. BNSF and MRL have now agreed to terminate the lease and, subject to the Surface Transportation Board, the line will be returning to BNSF operation.

    You've got some really great videography here, but please buy your audio guy some hearing aides. The sound levels are all over the place. The intro music is so loud I turned it down and consequently missed the intro narration. If I was dealing with horns and bells that loud I'd move away from them. Being that loud they simply detract from the rest of the work. But the video really captures the feel of the late afternoon heat and dust of late summer.

    • @bnsf7562
      @bnsf7562  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crossing leads to a private residence on the other side of the tracks, but you can easily access it from the road to the right. If you take exit 324 off I-90 and then head north, you're pretty much there.

    • @8Throtl1
      @8Throtl1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      FYI: Cabooses are no longer used in train service. They are now used mostly in switching operations, work trains or locals. This caboose is unmanned and being transported from one place to another. Some cabooses can be in the manifest of the train, others with coupler restrictions must be rear-end-only.

    A good chunk of those coal drags are now sadly a thing of the past as the Boardman plant in Oregon shut down. Another casualty of Obama’s “war on coal.”

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because you watching the trains you like to see is so much more important than looking after the only planet we have to live on.

    • @steeplecab
      @steeplecab ปีที่แล้ว

      Your political comment shows your lack of understanding of capitalism and market forces. Portland GE made a decision based on market research and plant replacement costs. Boardman was only a small segment of the westbound coal traffic, and the coal to Centralia and the export coal market is still strong. We see nearly as much coal across the MRL as we ever did.
