Update: after the video was finished I asked Pentax for the reshiping adress, als mentioned in the video. Happily for me they did not wanted the lens back, and were only interested in the monster adapter. So I could keep it and am really thankful for Pentax to give me the opportunity and let me keep the lens. Thank you! Just wanted to state that correct in terms of transparency. Happy new year guys!🎉
Which Ricoh office? In Japan? Do you have the parts list or exploded illustration of the lens. I'm trying to put a lens back together but just need to know where on metal spacer goes. Can you do a teardown video of this lens if you aren't using it? I couldn't find any others online.
Very tempting to purchase - thankfully its in production so I can wait. I am of the opinion that you should have kept it, but that's just me - glad you said yes to the Pentax loan!
Keeping it was luckily not a question. I don’t know if I would have felt comfortable to get this lens in exchange for a video. Now I can say, I had fun and there are no ties for me - even if they would have only been in my head.
I bought the original release in the early 2000's. I have to admit I never noticed the rainbow effect probably because I use it on apsc and usually avoid pointing into the sun. Otherwise I still use the lens as a sharp fast 50.
Hi Jim, thanks for the answer. Actually I got the answer from someone here in the comments, that the original released 50mm had not the rainbow flare of the modern „classic“ one. So maybe therefore you never noticed it. :-) Greetings Manu 🖖😄
In general fast 50s with APS-c are a good portrait lens in terms of field of view. The bokeh strength is maybe with full frame more, but if you stop down to f/2 you will still have enough blurry background with aps-c and great image quality. And if you get the classic version, then you can also use the rainbow effect.
Sadly no my original Pentax-FA 50mm 1.4 does not do the rainbow effect at all, and barely has any neat flares. I actually took it for a test on a full frame K-1 to check if it did the rainbow effect, and no. The rainbow effects are only available on this brand new "Classic" lens. All I know is the Flickr page for this lens will be pretty cool. I've seen elsewhere some interesting compositions with this rainbow lens. I actually really like using my older version wide open and find it perfectly fine having some nice 3D pop. The glow at f1.4 is good to soften faces for portraits, as especially women prefer a softer portrait rather than every wrinkle and defect showing.
Thanks for testing this out for me. :-) so the classic is really a unique lens! I should maybe also have a look into my old Flickr account and upload some of my images I made during the test. 🌈😁👍

Cool that you were able to keep the lense. I have the 80's f series 50mm 1.7 lense.

Ricoh EU.
No, I won´t dismantle this lens. Sorry. Mine is working fine, and I would it like to keep this state. ;)
Great Video and good to know about the crazy rainbow. I love this lens on my Pentax K-70 Thanks for the tips
Your welcome and thank you. ☺️

Do you think the Pentax 50mm 1.4 would be a good portrait lens on a k3iii?
