  • In Episode 200, we step into a new era. introducing The Proof with Simon Hill, where I bring you evidence-based, nuanced information to help you improve your health and longevity.
The Proof is a natural evolution of Plant Proof. In case you have concerns, let me clear the air. As you’ll hear me say in this episode:
Let me just say on the record, I still eat plants, and only plants. Dropping the "plant" from the title is by no means related to my diet at all; it is simply because I want to expand the show.
I’m joined by my good friend Drew Harrisberg on this episode. This is Drew’s seventh appearance on the show, and for good reason. He is an exercise physiologist, sports scientist, and has a graduate certificate in diabetes education and management. He has also learnt how to thrive while living with Type 1 diabetes, and empowers others to do the same.
On this episode, we discuss blood glucose, CGMs, meat and longevity, evolving the podcast, and more. Drew will be a regular guest on The Proof, sitting down with me every month or so.
    Specifically, we cover:
    0:00 Intro
    1:39 Caffeine & blood glucose
    10:29 CGMs for managing diabetes
    20:09 Interpreting data from CGMs
41:09 Evolving the Plant Proof Podcast
55:13 A recent shark attack in Australia
1:09:22 Claims that meat extends lifespan
    1:29:57 The fructose controversy
    1:52:49 Good news
    1:59:49 Book & show recommendations
    2:10:44 Conclusion
    - And much more.
If you want to hear more from Drew, you can connect with him via his Instagram:
    / drews.daily.dose
    or website drewsdailydose.com/
You can also listen to his previous six appearances on the show on your favourite podcast app.
As I say a grateful goodbye to Plant Proof to make way for The Proof, I want to extend my utmost thanks to you. It has been an incredible 4 years, and this journey could not have become what it is without you. Whether you’ve been listening from Episode #1 or tuned in for the first time today, thank you. I hope you’ve benefitted at some point along the way.
I’m proud to say that this episode is sponsored by Eimele Essential 8, a product I helped formulate and take every day. To get 5% off Eimele’s Essential 8 multi-nutrient head to theproof.com/friends.

I know there was an Australian study in old age homes where they increased the protein (eggs yogurt maybe meat?) for say half of the homes and the other half they didn’t alter the menu. They apparently found significantly reduced fractures from falling and then less complications / fewer deaths in the increased protein group. So while it’s obviously not impossible to increase protein intake with just plant based sources, its much easier to do it with animal protein because it’s more bioavailable.
So it’s a proper study because 1) all the food in this scenario is controlled - provided by the kitchens of the care homes 2) there were control groups. So its a significant finding that in this study, increasing animal protein increased both lifespan and healthspan. Sure the study should be replicated and similar trials could maybe be done with plant based proteins. Obviously the media should also not just make a huge headline for every nutrition study published in a journal because most of them are just based on questionnaires

One year later. My GP made a throw away comment at the end of an annual examination that my average glucose had drifted higher. I would not have thought too much about it other than Dr Peter Attia doing an entire AMA on the subject of CGM's presenting a case that lower blood glucose is better for all cause mortality and CVD and that few excursions (spikes or variability) is better. So. I was a practicing vegan. I procured a CGM through Levels and immediately discovered that my high carbohydrate meals were spiking my glucose in a big way. This suggests to me that at the age of 77 I have some insulin resistance. I am now very reluctantly modifying my diet by reducing my carbohydrates and increasing healthy fats. I am using soy isolate to insure that I reach my protein target (1.6 gm per kg body weight) and reintroducing oily fish. I am reluctantly doing this but it is hard to see an alternative if I buy into the Attia team hypothesis which I do because he has the data to back it up. When I hear Drew and other proponents of the whole food, high carb diet to manage their living with diabetes I cannot readily see how I can go this way since I am not in control of my insulin.

The solution is not to decrease carbs and add fat. On the contrary. You want to eliminate all oils and fat. I mean, completely. Like "Mastering Diabetes" recommends.

  • @lindalaz22

Thank you! I have been trying a CGM without diabetes just to see why i feel “hypoglycemic” sometimes while exercising with symptoms of weakness and shakiness and sure enough it helped me to see the real time low glucose. My understanding was that spikes are ok as long as it comes back down to normal but my doctor today said to flatline and eat low-carb which i did not want to hear as plantbased. I’m happy for the data but now I’m really confused! I used January AI and they have a Dr. Just approve the Freestyle libre. I think Levels just does the same. Thank you for the info!

I’d say it’s worth investigating seed oils (vegetable oils), such as Canola, etc, which are the byproducts of manufacturing. Back in the early 1900s Procter & Gamble wanted to sell their byproducts of manufacturing & they ended up hydrogenating this cottonseed oil & marketing it to the American public, under the name Crisco. And it goes overwhelmingly well for them, hence the disappearance of using lard for mostly all oil & cooking fat & into the marketing of oil byproducts & their health hazards.
Do some research on seed oils & you’ll easily & quickly see the money trail along with the health risks. Stay with Olive, (true, unadulterated) Palm & Coconut oils…

I’m curious as to what their fasting insulin levels are. I think they have a misunderstanding of insulin resistance, as well as the main cause for it. They seem not to recognize that excess carbs causes your liver to turn that energy into fat t(triglycerides) that they continue to blame for insulin resistance. There is no insulin resistance when insulin levels in the blood are low (optimal below 5). Once you reduce your carbs, your pancreas doesn’t have to work overtime producing more and more insulin to get that excess glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells that can’t deal with anymore energy. Reduce carbs first to lower insulin levels. Once you’re metabolically more healthy, you can start to eat more healthy carbs, but cut out the crap.

Hi Simon, Hi Drew, really appreciated this episode as I do all the amazing science based content that’s free and has truly improved my health and lifestyle. I had a question for you guys and you mentioned to post them here:
What are your thoughts on flax oil? I’ve been looking and trying various types of plant based milk alternatives and use oatmilk for coffee. However for everything else I found this pea protein based milk that comes with flax oil vs sunflower, canola or safflower oil which other plant based mills tend to have. It’s cold pressed and by nature packed with pretty good omega 3‘s but is it actually better than other seed oils? And lastly, if it is: would it be a good alternative sometimes to olive oil, which is the only oil I eat in its raw form as salad dressing or for cooking. Thanks so much!
PS: the name of the milk (sold here in the US) is from the brand “Good Karma” unsweetened flax milk.

I agree with much of what both of you say, but I still think a lower average and more stable glucose readings are better. I used to be prediabetic. I used to weigh 80 more pounds. Low carb and ketogenic diets helped me to eat fewer calories (I’m guessing, since I never actually counted calories) without ever feeling hungry. Now that I’m slimmer and more metabolically healthy, I eat more carbs without spiking, but by “more carbs” I mean: beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables including some of the starchy vegetables and even the rare cinnamon roll, but it’s easier for me to just say: “no foods with added sugar, no grains, no seed oils”. That basically excludes all the highly-processed snack foods and desserts. I naturally intermittent fast every day because eating 2 meals-with no snacks-keeps me satiated. Respectfully, your range seems both way too high and low to me. I don’t have diabetes, though, so applaud your efforts.

Guys, you forgot to get back to HbA1c in your conversation. From what I hear the bigger the number the more you need to focus on and be intelligent about your carb intake. To my atoms up thinking the HbA1c is a cumulative number of glucose units that ended up in wrong places in the body because there was too much carbs in your meal and you did not utilise this fuel with physical activities

CGM is awesome. It is the only way to know what normal is. How do you respond to meals and exercise? People will move more if they learn about this. Key word is learn. There are a few programs out there doing great things. Given 93% of the population is unhealthy we need something to spark a conversation.
Most importantly the more gen population that buys these the cheaper they are for type 1 diabetics.
Carry you argument further any medical measurement. Why would anyone need to know that data if they don't know how to interpret it? Should we not take medical measurements or should we keep it from patients? New technology is going to take us places in health that are amazing, but we need experienced type 1's like you guys to steer not avoid.

Whilst I thoroughly agreed with Drew’s opinion about the ‘revenge’ hunting of sharks after the recent Sydney incident, I thought it odd that there was no discussion about uploading that footage to various platforms. Eventually this man would have been reported as missing so filming the incident purely as evidence to show police that he died but his death was not suspicious would have been helpful but releasing the footage to the public without any regard as to how his family and friends would feel about it, let alone asking the family for permission to do so, was incredibly disrespectful. In a similar situation, footage of Steve Irwin’s death was never made public and for good reason.

I made the mistake of looking up what happened to Simon Nellist. The fatal shark attack. I am shocked and horrified. Also, the odds of being killed by a shark attack is 1 in 264 million according to Wiki, but I can't see their source for that. "However, in certain situations the risk of a shark attack is higher. For example, in the southwest of Western Australia the chances of a surfer suffering a fatal shark bite in winter or spring are 1 in 40,000 and for divers, it is 1 in 16,000" That does have a source.... now that's a little scary...but i'm sure death from heart diseases is a lot higher. I doubt people are as afraid of that

just before 20 min he says that avoiding saturated fat has helped with his diabetes - why is that? I’m new to this channel and generally cruise around in keto circles which are very pro saturated fat so it seems surprising to me (there are quite a few type one diabetics in that community that manage with nearly no insulin because ketones are also a good energy source if you’re adapted to them - also your liver doesn’t dump glucose in a high stress situation because to be in ketosis your liver wouldn’t have glucose stores).
I think you guys maybe misunderstand why the low carb community (keto fans) want CGMs. It’s because the criteria for pre diabetes is very lax and if you set the criteria appropriately then you get that like say almost half of the population is pre diabetic. So the understanding in the low carb community is that a well balanced ketogenic diet is the best and easiest way to reverse type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance vs type 1 that just doesn’t produce insulin). So the studies picked on that side of the cherry tree seem to suggest that Alzheimers, heart disease, many cancers etc etc are actually metabolic disorders - basically linked to insulin resistance. So in that sense having a CGM is useful. Like people with Type 2 diabetes should ethically be informed that they can choose to follow a specific restricted diet instead of needing to take insulin and then progressively more insulin and then eventually you lose your eye sight or get your foot amputated or whatever.
If you want studies on that then go search around the channel “low carb down under”.
Anyway - nice interview thanks :)

And I would say, if you want studies, check out Mastering Diabetes. Keto diets are a bandaid, not a cure.

I agree that the meat study is problematic at best. In a future video you argue that Ansel Keys study is good or fantastic. This study did better than Keys. We all need to do better. AM I WRONG?

Sad to hear you are chasing the money. Abandoning the plant-based podcast and expanding the paycheck.
