Tyshawn Sorey is on of the absolut best drummer in the world. But listen to his records: Pillars or Verisimilitude and you will find out that he is foremost an artist not only a world class drummer 👍👍
I agree. Just listened to a few of his compositions today for the first time (prompted by an article in the New Yorker). Wow. Gorgeous, interesting stuff. Dare I say, a musical genius. Got to get some of his CDs.
My dude Tyshawn, I've played with Tyshawn before, I'm a drummer also. I remember hanging out and talking with him after we both played at Cecil's Jazz Club before it close down. 😞 He is an awesome drummer, obviously ! And a really great guy as well. Highly intelligent and a really nice dude man. I still have one of his CDs I got from him at the club. Props to Tyshawn Sawyer one of the world's greatest jazz drummers ever. Love u man ! keep choppin Daddy-O !!! 🎶🥁 👍
"Dude, you HAVE to do something about all these negative comments about the sound of the drums. Or you're fired, ok?" -Meinl (before this video was made)
Haha! Too funny. You know, it really surprised me once we started producing these videos...I never realized that almost everyone who watches drum videos are actually professional sound engineers. Even if the "About" section on their FB page lists Fed Ex or insurance sales, or whatever, they are actually, secretly, professional sound engineers...Crazy... :-) - Chris
Piano is a Messiaen feature of rhythmic juxtaposition and elongation. He used Indian sources. For me it's pure crap and he made a horrible piano part sound cool. Maybe that's the way? Drumming is great though.
Is there anything to explain? I love it, the piano, bass and drums. Maybe its a just improvised before piano track and added to later, i know i record things in a similar method. Great fun.
Just how do you do this? I'm lost in your rhythms. Are you counting your whole way through this while all of your limbs just naturally flow? I wish I had this much outstanding flow and energy. Your drums and cymbals sound excellent!
Nick Siekierski Totally understand where you are coming from. I actually enjoyed this though, ive really started to listen to music outside of the 12 tone system common in the west. A lot of slavic folk music goes out of this realm with microtonal music etc, especially Hungary. Any particular reason you didn't enjoy this piece? Ive seen Tyshawn conduct a orchestra and it was very interesting to say the least.
the spungolator Sadly I think a lot of people put music as either having to be beautiful, or "fun". It is supposed to be like other art forms which means you can express anything, but who knows.
Tyshawn is a real fucking musician. Thank you so much for featuring this genius
Some of the most grooving and accessible polyrhythms I have ever heard!
I've never actually heard this guy play before, but once I heard him start to groove I instantly hit like! Badass!
Yeah me too!!!
Check his work w/ Vijay Iyer/Steve Lehman :)

This guy looks so relaxed it's crazy 😳
That's because he's not playing anything particularly difficult.
PROSPER DRUMS Dude literally has a PhD in music and is a professor.
Awesome musician! and it s great he present himself his set of cymbals at the end of the video
One of the greatest.
In very few occasions i see drummers using the effect cymbal properly. This is one of it. Great one!
I used to go watch Jason JT Thomas play about 15 years ago back in Dallas. Tyshawn's phrasing reminds me of JT back then, very fresh stuff even today
great groove! he makes those cymbals sing.
A whole album of this now Ty, for the next one
This is absolutely amazing, holy shit
He is becoming a legend among jazz players. Won a MacArthur Genius fellowship. Check out anything with Steve Lehman or Vijay Iyer

+MEINL Cymbals rekt.
Superb, T!
Tyshawn is an amazing composer who plays drums. Like Mingus was a composer who played bass. Tyshawn is the Mingus of drums!
Wow. This is incredible
God.. this is freaking awesome!
Great drums bro
May someone please explain this whole tune? Its sounds so complex yet so simple at the same time!! Tyshawn is changing the game!

@@citizenworld8094 with a handle like that it’s a shame you call Indian-influenced music crap
@@farmer5001 You didn't read what I said. Indian music is not crap. The piano chordal twosome is crap. For me, Indian music is superior.
Is there anything to explain? I love it, the piano, bass and drums. Maybe its a just improvised before piano track and added to later, i know i record things in a similar method. Great fun.
Tyshawn Sorey for President!!!
:D
Coolness--and Madness!

Bloody amazing!!!!
Wow!!! Amazing!!!!
Pick up the new Vijay Iyer Sextet album if you want to hear him play. Also worth noting that this guy has a PhD in composition.
I
Damn! His breakbeats!
Yet I've just discovered him how wtf
Only way this could have been cooler is if he had a toothpick in the corner of his mouth. Friggin' Awesome!
Yes, because sucking a toothpick would be completely in line with thisshambolic, dull song.
JERSEY JERSEY JERSEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend says he likes your playing more than Aaron Sprears..
Great drummer but you can keep the Messiaen piano bit. Shudda been solo.
Take car of your health man...
mmmm I like me some random half constructed half intuited noise
Not my cup of tea, discordant and unpleasant, but I can recognize a good drummer. $625,000 MacArthur "Genius" Grant-worthy? No!
you don't know shit.
postmodern shit "music" is right
