Without any shadow of a doubt learning a language is brain exercise. Learning more than one language is even more exercise.

You are an inspiration to many people. I am 60 in July. When I was 28, I had been learning French for several years, and I moved to Montreal. I never really learnt to speak French. One year ago I started learning French again, and soon got to a B2 level. I am still learning, using apps and listening to podcasts for native speakers. I have made far more progress over the past year than I ever did thirty years ago, I can now understand podcasts as long as the vocabulary is not too obscure, and the speakers do not mumble. In fact some podcasts are quite easy to understand. I think the difference today is the availability of language apps and the huge number of podcasts providing us with native language resources. I no longer need to spend thirty minutes travelling to a language class, I can do it all at home. And I am retired, so I can spend at least an hour a day on French, often much more. With languages, the key is time spent, in my opinion. I started learning German five months ago, the course says I am B1, I’m not, but it is fun and I am progressing, building vocabulary and slowly acquiring the grammar. It is hard, there is a huge amount to absorb, but I will get there. I also started to learn to skate andmplay hockey at age 53, and I played ice hockey this morning, languages and skating keep my mind active. Research has shown that learning and exercice slow down the degeneration of the brain and the body associated with aging. That said, the 20 year olds always skate faster than me, and get to the puck first!

I have went to college on and for over 13 and half years. It is very stark contrast from a boy that did not like going to school. Other than, the education itself, I enjoy the routine, the social connection, working towards something. I know, I don't necessarily need college but, I like most of the teachers and students in person or online. Maybe, I get it from my grandfather on my mother's side. He kept on learning until maybe the last 10 years of his life he was really sick. That and I have indulged a lot when, I was younger on quick pleasures.
I also, learn independently of school. All the languages, I study, I am not enrolled in any college course maybe in the future but, I am fine on my own for now.

    in brief:
In this video, Steve Kaufmann discusses the importance of lifelong learning and its impact on health, happiness, and success. He refers to a German audiobook by neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer, which highlights how adults think and learn. Kaufmann emphasizes that learning is crucial throughout life and is primarily dependent on the individual's curiosity.
He points out that governments invest heavily in education and health, but the ease of learning has never been greater due to the internet and other resources. Curiosity is the main driver for learning, and Kaufmann stresses the importance of remaining interested in various topics. He also notes that learning new things and staying mentally active can help maintain cognitive functions as people age.
Kaufmann critiques the overcomplication of learning styles and argues that curiosity should guide learning. He suggests that as long as individuals remain curious and continue to learn, their brains can stay as young as possible despite their age. Kaufmann concludes by stating that lifelong learning is a crucial part of being fully engaged as a human being, regardless of one's age.

Excellent Steve. I need to thank you for your help on this very subject. In February, this year I viewed one of your TH-cam videos. That lead to another. My underlying motivation was that I am a failed "language learner" or a "false beginner" in several languages. I wanted Spanish and I wanted it specific to Spain. Bingo. LingQ allowed me to embrace comprehensible input and to do so specific to Spain. You lead me to Pablo Romàn of Dreaming Spanish. I now have 300 hours of audio and video input. We have been told language is tough for adults. Nonsense. I am 70+ and this 'science project' of learning Spanish with comprehensible input is fun and I am seeing amazing progress. Your thoughts on language learning and the need to stay curious are on the mark. Perfect. Thanks much.

Neuronet summed it up (on the basis of this video)
: 1. Learning is important throughout our lives, not just language learning. 2. Learning is a major driver of health, happiness, and success. 3. It is important to remain curious and interested in things. 4. The theory of different types of learners is debunked. 5. Bringing in new information is important to maintain the youth and activity of our brains.

Bonjour Monsieur Steve, I'm so happy you uploaded this video, I'm very curious about neuroscience, language learning, artificial intelligence and video games in virtual reality. One of the most amazing experiences to learn in virtual reality, it is playing Cyberpunk 2077 but in the target language, that way every dialogue can be read and listened. In adition to that, as this game is very similar to what you have in VR Chat for instance (in terms of an open world kind of exploration gameplay), where there is multiple visual stimulus and words in banners and different parts of the virtual world. Playing the game without a VR headset is already very stimulating for language learning, as the fun makes vocabulary retention amplified. Al utilizar un dispositivo de VR, la inmersión amplifica aún más esa curva de aprendizaje, permitiendo aprender el idioma target como si se estuviese inmerso en el país de origen. Probably Cyberpunk 2077 and other games will create expansions where NPC can express ideas by communicating through ChatGPT, the perfect tutor.
We are in a beautiful time for learning everything and in particular for languages. Thank you for everything, you're like a rockstar in the polyglot arena, and I always recommend your channel and your videos to people to motivate them to learn new languages. Thank you so much for LingQ, amazing app

A wholehearted book recommendation for everyone who is interested in the neurobiology of learning and can read a little german: "Das neue Lernen heißt verstehen" from Dr.Henning Beck
It not only covers the whys and hows of learning but also strategies to make learning more fun, easier, and deeper, so one can actually do more with the concepts one has aquired.
It's ideal for medium reading bursts of like 15-25 minutes and thanks to the use of many analogies a pretty digestible read.

Steve clings to his impression that there are no such things as "visual learners", "auditory learners", etc. But the fact is that, even if the brain lears the same way (supposedly), people still have their preferences when it comes to studying. I for instance have difficulty in learning a new word in my target languages if I don't see that word written or if I don't write it myself.

    Hi Steve.
Maybe this hole learn types theory has a chance, if you change the perspective. I mean, if a person is more attracted to visual input it is a better learning tool for this person than a book would be and vise versa. Maybe the motivation to learn is the main point of this learning type theory. So it is more an "attracted to type" than a "learn type" thing.
    Cheers
    René
