I thought that this past season the 76ers should have drafted and kept Mikal Bridges or Michael Porter Jr. Also it's a long shot but they could have potentially selected Shia Gilgeous Alexander, and assuming the Hornets selected Miles Bridges, the 76ers could have tried to trade SGA for both picks from the Clippers, and selected both Mikal Bridges and MPJ. I don't understand why they traded for Zhaire Smith at all. They already had Fultz, Reddick and Furkan Kormaz on their roster at the time, and went on to draft Landry Shamet later in the draft. Taking a defensive and bigger wing player like Bridges seems much better, and MPJ seemed like he could be their last shot at drafting another superstar to play with Embiid and Simmons. It's not like they havent drafted guys with long term injury problems before.

Honestly I've thought about making a video on this. Basically, don't trade with Boston. Hang up the phone. A great example that isn't talked about much: Boston gets Jae Crowder (who becomes a solid wing and piece in the Kyrie trade later) and a 1st and 2nd round pick from the Mavs for Rajon Rondo, who quits on the team later (plus Dwight Powell who is actually a solid player as well but BOS still wins this)
IT got lucky as he was surounded by role players and non scoring stars when he led the Celtics in scoring. They were also amazing defenders which really helped mask IT's inability to switch anything on D. Celtics got lucky that Kyrie got available just when they needed to trade IT. Giving him the Brinks truck was clearly a landmine in front of the Celtics steamroller. I bend down before my Danny Ainge poster before every game ;) He is clearly the smartest GM in the game.
philly didn't give up tatum, they wanted fultz, boston wanted tatum. Ainge said as much in the post draft interview. They were going to take Tatum all along, but since philly thought the lakers might take Fultz, they swapped with Boston. Each team got the player they wanted in the draft. There was never a scenario where Boston didn't end up with Tatum, if the trade didn't happen, he would have been picked #1 by Boston, as per Ainge.
The Sixers tanked so much to gather several draft picks but didn't invest on scouting and training/player development. And what is it with them drafting so many bigs! It's not only about acquiring lots and lots of chances of getting THE next big star. It's mainly about scouting well and getting the most out of every pick. Just look at what the Warriors did--they did not build around top 5 picks. They made the most out of every pick and were able to get Curry, Klay, Draymond (a second round pick!), Barnes, Ezeli, and a great bench and defensive player in Jordan Bell. The Celtics also have a very good scouting team aside from that genius GM of theirs. They did not only draft great players but they also got a future HOF coach in Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens apparently agreed to be head coach with the condition that they don't purposely tank once he was head coach. Now they are able to build players' confidence and are able to develop them while having a winning mentality. Purposely losing and not bringing your A-game every night is a really sad system to be in.

Philly probably tanked way too hard, the difference between losing 55 or 65 games is surely significant when it comes to ping pong balls but I'm not sure that going into multiple seasons with a (I'm gonna be kind) shaky core and a questionable roster was the best kind of environment for the few really talented players they drafted. Hey, I dont know if someone commented with this already, but I believe in the Jrue Holiday trade the sixers also got back a first round pick which turned into Dario Saric.
Philly not acquiring a max level player in 18 makes it seem worse. Now if they whiff again and end up wasting the max space in 19 on several middling players, then I would agree the process failed.
as a sixers fan i cant blame them too much for missing out on all of those guys except for giannis, he would have been perfect for a tanking team because of how raw he was he could develop while the sixers tank and could still get embiid and simmons. oh well
I love when people say oh this team could have had this guy in 2014-2015-2016 and so on. Well if they draft whoever in 2014. Maybe they’re not bad enough to draft the good player in the following years
Having a great blueprint isn't enough to build a great house it takes more than an idea to create something EXECUTION is what makes the difference between Celtics and Philadelphia Obviously Danny is a special gm that any franchise should feel lucky to have
Only 2 players the 76ers really missed on was1.) Greek freak, who made perfect sense at the time for what we were trying to accomplish. 2.) Devin Booker we could have traded down for him and added depth. we also should haven taken a look at Kuzma. would i love to have Tatum now. yes but i am not mad at philly for not passing up on Fultz.
You do know that at the time of the 2015 draft porzingis was not a top prospect and devin booker came off the bench in college. As much as we’d all like to see philly with one of them on the roster there was no way they were going to give up the 3rd overall pick to draft either of them over the best player at his age when he was in high school
If they had been more patient and given Noel & Okafor more time on the court as well as a veteran big to help them out, they'd have a deadly front court now.
I don't believe they screwed up the process. What they have right now is a hundredfold better than what could've they been right now if they weren't in tanking mode for many years to get high picks. Though, I believe they couldve done better but I think they didnt have a choice. Free agents were not interested there and back in those times they were stuck in a much worse "no-man's-'land"situation.
I don’t think we messed it up. However, I do think it’s terrible timing. No only with the Warriors, but with the Celtics. I mean the Nets gifted them their entire future and now they have one of the best and deepest teams in the league right as we are coming up
Now I’m a sixers fan, so I might have bias, but I’m trying to remain unbiased. If you take away the free agent signings of Horford and Hayward, which core is better? Simmons, Embiid, Fultz, Saric, Covington etc...Or Irving, Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Rozier, Smart...Most would say that’s pretty close, if anything, slight edge to Philly. I say take away the free agent signings for Boston because Philly is in prime position to go out and be a major participant for a max player in free agency after this season. Names like jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant (longshot) are guys that the team can still afford to sign to a long-term deal because of Simmons’ impending contract extension. Say Philly brings in Jimmy Butler or Kawhi, because they’ve expressed interest in both, and have the cap space to do it. Say Fultz proves why he was the first overall pick in the draft and proves he’s a key contributor. All of a sudden, the tables begin to turn a little, and the balance of power is more split down the middle. Because Hayward and Horford aren’t getting younger. That’s just my opinion on all this
They didn't just get the 6 pick (Noel) for Holiday. They also got a future 1st. Which turned into Elfred Payton, who they traded for Dario Saric, a 1st round pick and a second. So Holiday was turned into Justin Anderson, Dario Saric, 1st round pick, and 3 2nd round picks. Do your research
Another thought: is the difference between The Process and sucking for a long time just branding? In the end, the Sixers didn't get much more for their protracted run of bad basketball than the Cavs did after Lebron went to Miami. They just called it something different and were maybe a little more open and intentional about what was happening.
We really should have expected the sixers to sink, given the biggest changes since they lost the playoffs were the Celtics gaining another series experience and getting back Kyrie and Haywood, while the sixers lost Ilyasova and Belinelli. That said, the big upside against Boston has to be Simmons' performance, going from apparently hacked by Boston in the playoffs to dominating the next time they met. All we really saw from the opening game was a point of reference for this season's growth. Fultz will likely continue to develop this year and Shamet is already proving to be worth more to that team than expected from the pick. We won't really know where they sit until Wilson, Muscala and Zhaire are all in the mix again and had a chance to find their way as a team. All in all though, it remains pretty inconceivable that they'll catch the Celtics this season. It's also inconceivable that the Celtics will be able to keep everyone beyond this year or that the 76ers won't gain something in the next off-season. If the Celtics can win this year, it's clear that they came out on top in the long game. If they don't, there's still a lot of room for a big future for the 76ers moving beyond this season.
People forget that the sixers traded the 10th pick for 12th and the first round pick of 2016, which translated to actual players was: Elfrid Payton for Saric and Ben Simmons, mind blown
Technically the Sixers got back the conditionally protected first they owed the Magic, which was protected 1-11. If it landed at number 1 (which it did) Philly would’ve kept their pick that year regardless of the Saric trade
Great vid, but they don't screw up, a team with four players drafted or traded in the starting five is better than an ordinario team in the NBA, if you want to compare the Sixers and the Celtics, Boston has been pretty good in free agency, not like Philadelphia because two or three years ago nobody want to play in that city, with two or three big names to sign in free agency (something like Horford, Hayward, Morris) they definitely will be better.
Sam Hinkie would have never made that deal. Hinkie started the Process but wasn’t given the opportunity to finish building his team. The Sixers didn’t ruin anything. The NBA did by forcing Hinkie out of his position because they can’t come up with a system that doesn’t incentivize tanking.
I think they absolutely did mess up The Process, just not with the Fultz trade. They screwed up the second they booted Hinkie for The Collar, who did basically nothing in his years as GM.
And they did it after the tanking phase was over. Kinda like thanks for getting us all this talent, but the league is really mad at us now, so we're going to throw you under the bus. You reap what you sow.
I love your points and have thought about them myself before. But as a true nba savant I need to think of all possible perspectives. An argument could be made that hitting on 3 out of 6 lottery picks is a good percentage. Look at all the lottery picks the kings have had over the years and where they have ended up. It would all be worth it if they had Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, which the 76ers do.
They didn’t mess up. They got unlucky. Most if not all of their top picks missed a chunk if not all of their rookie season (simmons and embiid). They took a gamble on noel and okafor but injuries set them back the same goes with their signing of bynum who showed lots of potential but also suffered major injuries. If their gamble paid off right at the start with either noel or okafor remaining healthy or at least recovered as the same way they were before the injuries then the sixers wouldn’t have to tank like they did
To paraphrase, Sam Hinkie made a mix of great and okay decisions. And Bryan Colangelo made a mix of bad and terrible decisions. They should have just trusted the process
It's so unfair to compare Boston and Philly as Boston had the most lopsided trade in NBA history to catapult their rebuild. Boston was able to compete while rebuilding, meanwhile the Sixers had to suck in order to obtain picks.
Nice video, but the Sixers biggest mistake was clearly trading the first pick and another lottery pick to your biggest rival. I guess they got impatient and did not trust Ben to handle the ball? Imagine having Simmons, Sexton, Covington, (Tatum/Ball/Fultz), Saric and Embiid? I made this argument when the trade went down as I thought Sexton is not much worse of a guard than Fultz (Sexton was projected 6-8 in the mock drafts). I also did not like the Kostas Antetekoumpo trade and giving up on Holmes. Still, they have a shot If they can build around Ben and Joel. Time will show. Still it was great for me as I am a Celtic fan. Lastly, the Zaire Smith trade was great in potential. That draft class is insanely deep. If Miami fail to build a playoff team, Philly might get a young star to pair with B&J. That might actually happen as Miami is a pretty old team with Dragic and Whiteside fading.
I think the 76ers were not as bright as they seem to be now. Of course they have 2 future top 10 players with Embiid and Simmons, but they had chances to become an even greater team. To be fair though, it seems it took them too long to be good at drafting.
They made a mistake losing a pick and Jason Tatum in one day. I'm not going to sit here and trash talk Fultz too badly, but he hasn't looked like a #1 pick so far. And Philly's ownership must be hating the fact that Tatum and Embiid seem to respect each other and played a lot against each other over the summer. Now imagine Tatum, Embiid, Devin Booker, Gianis, and Simmons as a starting 5. That'd more than give the Warriors a run for their money and could've been a reality in Philly. This option was on the table for Philly on draft nights. They absolutely made some mistakes. And as another side note: Terry Rozier would be a starter and borderline All-Star on most teams in the league. If Danny Ainge figures out how to keep Scary Terry and Kyrie next season then he truly is the best in the business.
In 2013 Philly picked Michael Carter-Williams with Giannis still on the board. In 2015 they selected Jahlil Oakafor with Devin Booker going later on. And in 2017 I think anyone still reading understands how easy it would have been to come away with Tatum instead of Fultz. Then Philly would have Simmons playing the 1, Booker at 2, Tatum and Giannis at 3 or 4, and the big man Embiid at 5. If I could build any starting 5 of players today this might be it.
I hate when people highlight shit like "They could have picked a player that was still available to them" Like Giannis, even though when he was coming into the league he was a super raw prospect and was looked at this long term project meanwhile they drafted Jabari Parker to be their go to guy, couple injuries and Giannis developing quicker than expected changed that but expecting teams to have this kind of foresight is unreasonable. Not every one of your points were like this but you aren't the only one who makes statements like that in videos looking back at drafts. Hindsight is 20/20.
ImAviex Giannis could of easily turned out being the next Darrius Miles. Tall skinny kid with all the potential but injury prone ,never put on weight and questioned work ethic. Basketball is a hard sport to be a scout. The game has been evolving the last 10 years. Now a days wouldn’t even think about Greg Oden 1st and Kevin Durant 2nd, plus you film is H.S and 1 year of college for most 1st rounders. Then the fact your making teenagers millionaires their maturity level and goal to be great is hard to pick over potential most cases. Darko Milic would of been more like Porzingus type player instead of messing up his game and trying to make him the NBA Center of 20years ago.
Yes the sixers made some mistakes but I dont think its comparable. If 76ers picked up the right guys (and btw philly's draft selections were always what people thought were the best available, its not like they were the only ones wrong) like we know boston did, they would never be able to have top10 picks back to back years like boston had. Sixers had their own picks while boston had the picks of a franchise that was terrible and didn't have a way of improving. The only thing sixers may have screw up is the tatum fultz trade but even that we have to wait to discuss as they are only on their second years. All Im saying is: blame the nets for making the celtics so stacked, not philly.
i think the problem is the coach.. if tatum was draft by the sixers.. he wouldn’t be that good.. on one team u have a coach who push u.. teach u.. and the 2nd team have a coach who dont know what he does.. doesn’t react.. predictable.. and don’t show any trust in the first pick.. fultz is what the sixers need.. we all know it.. so even if he make mistakes u keep him on the court.. not bench him for all the series against the celtics.. and a full second half of the opener game.. u compare the sixers to the celtics.. the key here is the coach..
Sure, the Sixers didn’t make as many great decisions as the Celtics did. But let’s also say this, the Sixers have the two prospects that are better than any on the Celtics. Only Tatum is close to having as much potential as Simmons. But the second BIG difference between these two teams, is that the Sixers didn’t have the opportunity to absolutely FLEECE a team like the Celtics did. Not really a fair comparison.
If the sixers had picked some of the better players in 2013 and 2014 they wouldn’t have been bad enough to get good picks later so you can’t rly say they could’ve had McCollum and Kristaps Edit: just finished the vid lol he addressed both my comments
they had a bad game because their bench is pretty depleted. that's it. they did exactly what they planned to do, draft the best available player, and trade them for more picks if they didn't pan out. yes, they could've had giannis...so could 13 other teams, taking him was considered a huge risk at the time. everybody views the drafts with 20/20 hindsight. the process took them out of mediocrity and got them 2 generational talents, and some very good players. it appears fultz was their one true mistake. between him and bennet, kwame isn't gonna be mentioned as the biggest bust of all-time anymore.
I don't like the hindsight argument. McCollum had a very weak rookie season and nobody expected Giannis to be this good. It's easy to say who they should've picked AFTER the fact. But one thing I'll say, is that I never saw the point in drafting fultz when they already had their PG of the future that also can't shoot. That was stupid to me
PG of the future? Simmons playing point was an afterthought, they would’ve have played him at the 3/4 if Fultz actually played. So they were better off drafting Fultz than Tatum. Obvs now we know that was a bad decision but that’s the ‘hindsight’ argument you don’t like.
@@poppop9448 not really hindsight, I had that opinion when they drafted Fultz. Simmons was supposed to be their point forward, like a LeBron. It never made sense to pair him up with Fultz.
keep in mind though that they REALLY HIT when they did hit ....so Joel Embied is the next once in a generation talent ala shaq and Hakeem/ewing type talent ....and they did it twice not just once with simmons you have the Lebron/kobe type talent....and you have them together !!!!!! pretty sure that makes up for how badly they missed on other top picks...but yes had you just managed 1 more really really good now type player notably Tatum bc contract cheaper then if they had picked Atentakumpo years back we are looking at the next dynasty NO DOUBT!!.. so i understand your complaint..
Great video. Sixers blow. I could be a better GM. Boston is titletown so what do you expect I guess. Boston just never gonna lose, Red Sox Patriots Celtics jeez
Only because the Celtics made better picks than the Sixers doesnt mean the Sixers didnt do a great job. Orlando, Minnesota, the Lakers, the Suns and the Kings were in simmilar positions and did worse to way worse. Just picking the best managed team in all of sports and saying "You did worse so you fucked up." is dumb. Thats all it is. Could they have done better? Sure. Is it realistic to expect that? No.
well when you draft 3 centers... and then didn't trade them or fultz for a star guard. yeah, they fucked up. they won't win unless they get a star PG. they should've went after kemba and they went after horford which was the worst idea. they didn't need him and unless they get that star guard and slide ben to the 3 or 4.. they won''t win. they should've maybe even waited to draft a guard. although they passed up on so many im not even a 6ers fan and it makes me SOOOOOOOOO PISSED.
NOTE: As some of you know, I am a Nets fan, so there is no Celtics/Sixers bias in this... just my thoughts!

I love when people say oh this team could have had this guy in 2014-2015-2016 and so on. Well if they draft whoever in 2014. Maybe they’re not bad enough to draft the good player in the following years
Turns out Tucker was spot on with this prediction
Sixers hit big on 2 draft picks. They didn’t mess anything up, the Celtics just finessed the nets
76ers also got NOP 1st round pick from that Holiday trade that ended up being Dario Saric
It’s funny how Jayson Tatum feels like the missing piece for this team. That trade also helped arguably their biggest rivals.
Having a great blueprint isn't enough to build a great house it takes more than an idea to create something
EXECUTION is what makes the difference between Celtics and Philadelphia
Obviously Danny is a special gm that any franchise should feel lucky to have
Only 2 players the 76ers really missed on was1.) Greek freak, who made perfect sense at the time for what we were trying to accomplish. 2.) Devin Booker we could have traded down for him and added depth. we also should haven taken a look at Kuzma. would i love to have Tatum now. yes but i am not mad at philly for not passing up on Fultz.
The difference is one team is tanking while another team was tanking for them
You do know that at the time of the 2015 draft porzingis was not a top prospect and devin booker came off the bench in college. As much as we’d all like to see philly with one of them on the roster there was no way they were going to give up the 3rd overall pick to draft either of them over the best player at his age when he was in high school
But other than that great video can’t wait for the next one
lose more for okafor
Media had been covering porzingis since he was 15 And he was definitely a top prospect, despite the fans' reaction in new York
was the media saying he is better than okafor
@@alasdairmacintyre9383 Don't forget that Okafor was highly touted in 2015. People were saying he would become the next great center.
If they had been more patient and given Noel & Okafor more time on the court as well as a veteran big to help them out, they'd have a deadly front court now.
Tobias and Jimmy > lol
I don't believe they screwed up the process. What they have right now is a hundredfold better than what could've they been right now if they weren't in tanking mode for many years to get high picks. Though, I believe they couldve done better but I think they didnt have a choice. Free agents were not interested there and back in those times they were stuck in a much worse "no-man's-'land"situation.
I don’t think we messed it up. However, I do think it’s terrible timing. No only with the Warriors, but with the Celtics. I mean the Nets gifted them their entire future and now they have one of the best and deepest teams in the league right as we are coming up
Omg the title immediately pulled me in
They messed it up 3 hours ago tho...
This just makes you think how good Lakers are in recent drafts
If they had picked well in 2013 and 2015, they wouldn’t have been bad enough to land Simmons. The only pick that I truly thing was bad was Fultz
Danny Ainge, you the real MVP!
Tank for like 7 years and still don’t have a team that can get you to even the Conf finals
You failed to mention that the 10th pick in 2014 came from NO so Jrue was traded for 2 first round picks and the sixers ended up with Dario Saric
If they can land durant this offseason its gonna be a whole nother story
They have to improve their scouting, and they need to hone those players to be like the Celtics
Yeah, I forgot that, it was their own pick, but you can say they got it back from the Dwight Howard trade (¿?)
Your becoming one of the best nba youtubers
Sam Hinkie would have never made that deal. Hinkie started the Process but wasn’t given the opportunity to finish building his team. The Sixers didn’t ruin anything. The NBA did by forcing Hinkie out of his position because they can’t come up with a system that doesn’t incentivize tanking.
honestly the difference is brad stevens. he makes this squad look much better than it should be and thats why theyre outperforming all expectations
im probably going to jail no the difference is really the Nets
I think they absolutely did mess up The Process, just not with the Fultz trade. They screwed up the second they booted Hinkie for The Collar, who did basically nothing in his years as GM.
And they did it after the tanking phase was over. Kinda like thanks for getting us all this talent, but the league is really mad at us now, so we're going to throw you under the bus. You reap what you sow.
the Celtics actually traded KG/Pierce on draft night of 2013 as well... just not for picks in the 2013 draft like the 76ers
I posted this comment before I watched the whole video and the the comparison to the Celtics. I now see how that cannot be debated
Colangelo 100% definitely ruined the Process. Shoutout to the NBA for forcing him on the team
Dang they would have got Sexton or kyrie no matter what that’s lit I can’t help but think about how nice Sexton would have been in green
If their gamble paid off right at the start with either noel or okafor remaining healthy or at least recovered as the same way they were before the injuries then the sixers wouldn’t have to tank like they did
the difference between the 2 teams is Hayward and Horford i.e the Celtics won in free agency which the Sixers have lacked in doing the last 2 seasons
This is why I don’t trust the process😂😂
Jrue Holiday's and KG/Pierce's trades happened the same night
As much as you can make the argument that it could have been better it could have been worse too
Celtics had Garnett and Pierce 🤦🏾♂️
If the sixers had picked some of the better players in 2013 and 2014 they wouldn’t have been bad enough to get good picks later so you can’t rly say they could’ve had McCollum and Kristaps
Edit: just finished the vid lol he addressed both my comments
I say that at the end of the video my dude
they had a bad game because their bench is pretty depleted. that's it. they did exactly what they planned to do, draft the best available player, and trade them for more picks if they didn't pan out. yes, they could've had giannis...so could 13 other teams, taking him was considered a huge risk at the time. everybody views the drafts with 20/20 hindsight.
the process took them out of mediocrity and got them 2 generational talents, and some very good players. it appears fultz was their one true mistake. between him and bennet, kwame isn't gonna be mentioned as the biggest bust of all-time anymore.
The bottom line here is that nobody the Celtics got are anywhere near as good as Embiid or Simmons.
Firing Sam Hinkie ruined everything...
This kills me as a longtime sixers fan..
The difference is the Celtics got kyrie and Hayward I’m free agency. The 76ers never got a single all star free agent signing.
4 losing seasons an Theo Playoffs with a young Core is extremely good performance from The Gms. ASK The Lakers Or The Kings....
I think they messed up the process but I also believe they gave up on their picks too fast.
every successful team has a starting point guard that can shoot 3s, if ben cant i would get rid off him
Philly might as well go looking for gems in the d league
It never made sense to pair him up with Fultz.
i hope not the 76ers look like a team that could win an nba title
Simmmooonnns neeedddssss a jummmmmpppppeeeerrrr.
Giannis was unknow, Bucks gambled and won. KP didn't want to go to Sixers
A lot of these mistakes were after Hinkie got forced out tho...
2015 draft was the biggest mistake
keep in mind though that they REALLY HIT when they did hit ....so Joel Embied is the next once in a generation talent ala shaq and Hakeem/ewing type talent ....and they did it twice not just once with simmons you have the Lebron/kobe type talent....and you have them together !!!!!! pretty sure that makes up for how badly they missed on other top picks...but yes had you just managed 1 more really really good now type player notably Tatum bc contract cheaper then if they had picked Atentakumpo years back we are looking at the next dynasty NO DOUBT!!.. so i understand your complaint..
yea hindsight is a thing, nobody thought dbook woould be a star nor with giannas
As a Celtic fan I feel terrible for the6ers! NOT TRUST THE TANKING 😂🤣
Bryan Colangelo effect.
They should’ve kept Sam Hinkie shut and continued the process.
Colangelo almost fucked it up... but its fixable...
Hindsight is 20/20.
Imagine giannas on the 76ers
Process ain’t over though still have a lot of picks
Brian Colangelo fucked up with his Fultz pick
