I could have split this up into 2-3 vids, but thought I might as well put everything together. In this hour long video I teach my though process whenever I draw and render a human head.
Hey, James. First of all, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I'm very happy for your decision to carry on with your channel and your social media projects. These tutorial videos have been very helpful for me as I have absolutely no idea of drawing, but I kind of need how to do it so this is a nice place to start practicing. Thank you for all your dedication, for your wholesomeness and making the world a better place.
this is what i call tutorial! some people do how to draw video, and put everything in 5min timelapse. i hate tutorials like that. great job man, i really like your style. i hope that your channel will grow fast, so that more people could learn from you. keep up good work. :)
Lol thanks - when I looked at the footage time and saw over an hour I thought "what should I time lapse?" Then after the viewing the footage I said to myself "nothing..." Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Other people just try to do a tutorial in like a 5 minute time lapse and just taking super fast, going through everything super fast. I don't like that. But you on the other hand, I just love this! You do these really long detailed videos, talking about everything, especially drawing in REAL TIME. Not some freaking time lapse. Thank you very much for this tutorial!
"This is basic"........!!! Yeah right! Haha. Brilliant work, just brilliant. So glad I found your channel! Massive help to see your thought process and how you approach your work. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I have been struggling with faces and this helped out a lot. Your style is what i prefer when I draw. the shadowing and hatching is something I can adopt into my style hopefully. This video was exactly what I needed.
Of all the face tutorials on TH-cam I think this one gets to the point and shows the actual importance of drawing a head. Whether you draw comic super hero style or not there is something for you in this video if you draw people.
Incredible effort and resource here, really grateful for the time you've dedicated to providing actually useful tutorials. the level of detail you go into is something you rarely see given for free thank you
I think it is interesting seeing your method on how you started the inking James. If I was drawing I would start adding the wrinkles under an eye latter and you went in early on in the inking doing that. For me I would try getting the basics done before going into so much details early on in the inking phase. Even the eyes I tend to do the outline of an eye first and color it in much latter. I also tend to draw in a symmetrical fashion where I go back and forth as I draw to make sure they look similar. I am also surprised in the inking phase since it has already been traced that you did not make those lines quicker rather than what you did adding lots of lines or hash lines even as you were making the lips.
This is one of the most amazing tutorials I have ever seen, keep it up! I absolutely agree with you about the eyes, if they don't look right your drawing won't look right
Great tutorial - I've started to change my approach to head and figure drawing after watch your video...I have been drawing with a two dimensional approach and expected a three dimension results! Thank you for sharing.
Nice tutorial, I just started to learn how to draw, I have a year or so trying, I am an adult and I am hopeless, my circles are crooked, I can't draw straight lines and my ovals, well, I am a mess and probably I will never ever work at any studio or show my drawings to strangers, but I have the desire to draw for myself, friends tell me to give up to let those with talent to do art and I can just admire it, but I want to draw so I follow a lot of tutorials, yours is one of the best, thanks a lot.
If you stick with it long enough, you'll be able to do it. Some people do have talent that helps them learn more quickly, but--me included--others have to work at it FOREVER. I promise that if you keep at it, it will all start to make sense; it just takes time and practice. Hair-tearing time and practice. Keep at it and never give up!
Maybe you need better friends. Keep working at it, and don't throw away your older stuff. Keep it so that you can look back at it. Makes it easier to see how you've improved over time. And practice every day.
Cool vid, James! Love the detailed narrative of your drawing process. Much continued success and a Happy New Year to you and your family and the entire Art Alliance.
James, hey man let me say thank you for doing this video and teaching the perspective of thinking and constructing the head and face 3D. I love how it really gives it a 3D feel and not flat. I am going to practice the constructing and drawing in 3D technique and program my mind to think 3 dimensionally. Your art work is awesome! Heck you are awesome! I dream of being a comic artist...but you've lived it and you are passing your knowledge and techniques on to us in your videos. Thank you so much!
I just followed along and drew the head one of my greatest works and it sure was hard to stop lol it took me about 2 hours cause i had to stop and catch up amazing work (I also made a time lapse)
Absolutely loved this tutorial, filmed in real time was very helpful and your running commentary was really informative. Please do not use time lapse in future videos. Have subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your videos. xxx
James, I think this will be a longer commet so sorry for that lol, have a lot to say, hope I dont bother you!I cant express how much I enjoyed this tutorial! I loved to see a tutorial on face/heads from you, think I mentioned this once haha, cuz I knew how well you can do it! loved the way how you talk thrue whole video, how you explain it all! Maybe bit longer video, but it was worth it every second!I would like to see a tutorial on anathomy in future. But when you mentioned prospective, I think the best way is to do a tutorial how to draw backgrounds in prospective, buildings etc. Maybe start with some basic prospective tut, and than like big one like city or something. A lot of ppl would love that!Again James, thanks for youre time shared to do this tutorial for us. We appreciate it. Keep it up.
Hey James this is something which i really needed. you might not remember me but i've been asking you for a tutorial like this on different social media because i didnt know that you've already made one on this. and honestly this is gonna help me alllooottt. thanks alot for this. and you are an amazing and a wonderful teacher. keep drawing, teaching and inspire young artists like me. lot's of best wishes from a Fan and an aspiring comic book artist from India. thanks alot. i wish i could have a word with you through any means i would be so happy. i hope you see this comment. thanks for this tutorial and all the other tutorials. Thank you.
.... Rookie here,. Fairly new to actually using TH-cam and all. Especially anything that resembles online schooling.. But I gotta tell ya,. I'm all in. You are my sensay now.. Your like the last savage dragon,.. aka "Who's the Master?!"....lmao not Bruce Leroy. I'm kidding ofcourse,. i just now finished watching 3 videos in a row for my first time,. And noticed I've been up all night (7am now) and just been exploring my past passion and realizing what I had and list.. I wish I kept on with what talent I had, by now i could've been a contender 😉 I'm going to the local comic shop to pick up some old school passion and I just might doodle around.. Thanks to you buddy buddy.. Inspiration,.. Word of the day lol.. Peace
What's worse than when someone is watching you drawing, and you havent finished and they're like: WHERES THE ARM! WHERES THE LEGS! HE NEEDS ANOTHER EYE
Great tutorial! I like to think myself reasonably good at drawing realistic animals but when it comes to drawing humans I'm a total noob 😂 this video had some good tips thanks
Great video... very good for learning proportions of the head and drawing angles... btw how many times did you say 'OK' ? Somewhere around 3014 times ? :DD
Tyvm for this tutorial. I try to draw fot many years and always getting stuck. All books on how to are flat, My teachers did not alowed me to think like this saying to many lines are confusing. So i quited drawing at all. Now im gonna try again tyvm
Hey can you please do a tutorial for drawing the head in different angles or doing tutorials on eyes , mouths , noses , eyebrows etc in a comic style. Thnx.
I like the way you do your drawings but I have a question,Why do you draw in choppy lines instead of one smooth line.? I never draw with a choppy line, always smooth.I like the way you do your shadowing...
But what if you want to draw a face looking straight ahead up at the "viewer" so to speak? Do you generally try to avoid doing that or do you have some other way of doing it than circle and +line?
Is there a difference im your drawing technique when drawing comic characters and real life people or movie characters. Like your star wars mega drawing, actors they look exactly like them.
I have been a long time subscribe, back when you had 248 subs, I asked you a week ago or something like that, about comic anatomy and faces, then I see this! This was amazing, inspiring and thanks for listening. James you are one of my inspirations for comics, but I can not find a comic book that you drew where do I find them, please help. Thanks.❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾😀😀😀😀😀😀😊😊😊
this tutorial make people think, "I could do this", which tells you that this is a very good and inspirational tutorial
He makes it look easy

before he added the hair, it looked like The Rock.
the champ is here!
how did you see him then...it's not him
A one hour video of drawing a head? This got it all.
i like the flawless teaching style and the inspirational way he teaches.
You are a awsome artist still blown away by your star wars tribute thanks
"This is basic"........!!! Yeah right! Haha. Brilliant work, just brilliant. So glad I found your channel! Massive help to see your thought process and how you approach your work. Thank you!

eve ruby Don't give up, that's the worst thing you can do
thanks
I have friends that can't draw, but I don't tell them to give up, instead of that I try my best to learn them to get better
I was lost until you drew neck but good tutorial the only one that helped me. Thank a lot.
This is unbelivable. My biggest wish is to draw in this style. Thank you very much for this Video and much Respect.

Robot construction.. panels vents detailing and perspective is a tutorial I would love from u. Thanks love your channel
Wow. I never noticed this before but you're style for drawing humans is reminiscent of Gary Frank's work. Looks awesome.
What's worse than when someone is watching you drawing, and you havent finished and they're like: WHERES THE ARM! WHERES THE LEGS! HE NEEDS ANOTHER EYE

Love these videos! You should do character design, kind of like Jazza does on his channel.
Very good tutorial, gave a lot more detail in your prossess and its helped me a bunch. Also is it just me or did you acidently draw John Cena
Great video... very good for learning proportions of the head and drawing angles... btw how many times did you say 'OK' ? Somewhere around 3014 times ? :DD

Looks totally like .. I'm not really sure - I can't see him! ;-)
I never draw with a choppy line, always smooth.I like the way you do your shadowing...
dude, great job
Would you recommend practicing and focusing on one subject for a longer time or several like gesture, anatomy exetra?
This is so good whys it only have 500 veiws
any chance if you do another tutorial about somethin if you just use a dark pencil?if possible
The end result of this guy reminds me a lot of the technique used and rendering of the characters in the walking dead comics.
this is a great tutorial
Nice tutorial
tnx for the great tut, much appriciated :)
Fantastic tut. Any chance you could do a simplified line drawing version, like it was for a graphic novel? TIA :)
Am I early? 🙈 haven't watched this vid yet but I know this is going to be good. Thanks James!
Also how do erase so well without crumpling the paper 😨
Alsoooo where did you get that blue pencil that you use for the construction lines! Thanks again lol
+Invader VG its most likely harder drawing paper that doesn't rip as easily
Could you do more videos where you go through the basics rather than detailed characters
is it possible to show us how you do the front view the same way , ?
Which comics did you draw,so I could check some of work.
It's OK :) Thank you for all good stuff!
But what if you want to draw a face looking straight ahead up at the "viewer" so to speak? Do you generally try to avoid doing that or do you have some other way of doing it than circle and +line?
I wish i have the same talent you have :( haha
out of curiosity, what are the little tiny lines for?
love this tutorial!
How do you make a front view 3 dimensional?
Barely stumbling on this and it looks like John Cena
Is there a difference im your drawing technique when drawing comic characters and real life people or movie characters. Like your star wars mega drawing, actors they look exactly like them.

Could you do a video on how to do anthropomorphic (animal/human) head?
