It Survived the Vietnam War - Now I’m Bringing It Back to Life - Restoration ASMR

- This lighter is a genuine artifact from the Vietnam War era, dating back to 1964-1965. On its bottom, the Peace sign is engraved - a symbol of the 1960s anti-war movement. This iconic emblem became an international symbol of the fight for peace, embraced by both soldiers and war protesters.
Interestingly, lighters like this were often crafted from recycled brass shell casings, visible through the tiny pores in the metal. These lighters were not just practical tools; they were personal mementos, often engraved with messages, symbols, or reflections by soldiers, making each piece uniquely meaningful.
The Vietnam War, one of the most significant conflicts of the 20th century, lasted from 1955 to 1975 and left an indelible mark on history, claiming millions of lives. For soldiers, lighters like this often served as personal tokens, reminding them of home amidst the chaos of war.
During the restoration, I made the deliberate choice not to polish it to perfection but to preserve the marks of its use and history. This lighter is more than an object - it’s a storyteller, carrying tales of life, war, and peace.
In this video, you’ll witness the full restoration process, step by step. From cleaning the metal and working on intricate details to restoring its functionality, all while maintaining its historical character. The final result will surely amaze you!

Nice job. I am from Australia and remember the Vietnam days well. Now much older realize we should never have been there in the first place.

Unfortunately, that’s true.
Thank you very much for watching! 🫶
Wish I had bought more remembrances when I was there (67-68). All I have are a few pictures. I really miss a lot of my men. We are a dying generation. The work you do, and many like you, brings back memories of men and places and, sadly, battles. Your work is awesome, keep it up.
Thank you for your heartfelt words and for sharing such personal memories. It’s deeply moving to know that my work helps bring back important moments from the past. I have great respect for your generation and truly appreciate your support.
The United States since you asked. And I wonder if my father has any trench art from Vietnam. 🤔 By him or by any of the other sailors. Just because you’re on a boat doesn’t mean you don’t feel like creating something at times. Art knows no boundaries.
I’m sure sailors made their own relics. For example, during long voyages, they often crafted items like scrimshaw - carvings or engravings on whale bone or ivory. It was a way to pass the time and create something personal to remember their journeys.
Great job on this historical artifact. I remember these times well.
I admire your talent, researching, restoration ethic,(if that is such a thing), dexterity and little humorous details you include.
Thank you very much for such kind words! I’m really pleased that my work brings back warm memories for you. I put my heart into every restoration, and your words inspire me to keep improving. I'm glad you noticed even the small details and humor! 😊
Perfect 10 in my book!! Brings back memories.

I was in Vietnam 1969 and 1970 and have never run across a lighter that look like this. We were all using Zippos by the time I got there. But what a beautiful thing to have...
Thank you for sharing your story! Zippos have such a rich history, especially during that time. I’m glad you enjoyed this lighter-it’s truly a unique piece of history.
@@Re-flame Not sure if your national culture would be aware of a footnote to the history of the Viet Nam War concerning Zippo lighters. American soldiers were shown in news films on US television walking through a rural village and setting the houses on fire by holding Zippo lighters to the edge of the straw roofs. This was very upsetting to a lot of people. We were supposed to be the "Good Guys" and here were young American boys burning down poor peoples houses - the very people we were supposed to be there to protect from this sort of thing.
This is truly a tragic episode that highlights the complexity and contradictions of war. Such actions could provoke confusion and anger, especially among those who believed in the mission of “protecting” civilians. This case became a symbol of moral dilemmas and the loss of trust in the Vietnam War.
Australia! Superbly executed. If only that little lighter could talk, what a story it would have!
Thank you so much! I agree, if this little lighter could talk, it would definitely have an incredible story to tell!

Fantastic restoration. I found an old gold plated Dunhill lighter while Metal detecting. I think it's from around the 1920's. Would love to find someone who could restore it.

My older brother has a lighter made from a spent fifty caliber bullet casing and a steel jacketed round, that was constructed by an artisan in Viet Nam. He hoped against all hope that fellow made it out during the fall of Saigon, but my brother was never able to find out the fellow's status.
That's an incredible story. Items made with such soul become true symbols, and it's important to preserve their memory.

@@Re-flame дякую
