Tony love your videos. Please don't take down your older videos when starting your new channel, please they are valuable. Thanks for your sharing skills and tips of what you've done.
Just came across this video after watching your potato in buckets vids. I've been growing tomatoes for years now and this is an excellent video for anyone starting to grow them and wanting to get the best harvest. I do pretty much all of these and it really makes a difference. I'm doing 38 different varieties this year, most of which I've never grown before but for me that's the best part of growing heirloom tomatoes, you have so much choice and can create a really beautiful selection of tomatoes.
Tony , love your videos , had allotments for 40 years , had some success and some failures but the beauty about gardening is you learn all your life . And I must say I have learned more since I discovered your site than I ever learned from all the “old timers”. Thanks again Tony from a Northumberland grower .
great tips thanks Tony. Your tomato plants look like real cordons/ columns, with the fruits going close to the main stem. Even when I grow "cordon" varieties, I get something very bushy with the fruits all way out. I think if I had narrow columns I'd get more plants in. Could you make a video on pruning for tidy tomato plants? Thanks
Love your videos. I just started checking them out this spring and have found them to be very helpful. I am growing a few plants of small tomato called "sweet orange" here in Canada I get them from one of our local farmers market venders. I've been getting them from her for three years now, I don't even bother with the red varieties anymore because the sweet orange are amazing. Thanks for all the wonderful tips I have been able to used.
yesterday I listened to your video and trimmed the branches below the tomatoes to give sunlight to them and I have already noticed the differenced. Thank you.
I have ONE tomato plant in a large tub this year. It guzzles an entire watering can (7 litres) of water DAILY. I supplement mine with a weekly dose of Tomorite tomato food plus an additional bonus every few weeks of yeast solution. This is a half bag of sugar, 2 packets of yeast, left to ferment overnight with hot ( not boiling ) water filling a 5 litre water bottle. A cup of this added to your watering can will activate the plant's sugar production, the solution is also effective on strawberries.
I’m growing Picus plum tomatoes, Plum Regal, and Sakura cherry tomatoes this year (2024). Here in the Toronto area we generally grow our Tomatoes outside, after starting them indoors.
You've given some good tips there, Tony. Many thanks. When you mentioned the fan heater to blow over the plants, I have used this for many years now, as a means of preventing blight and mildew. I use a timer and move the air throughout the night about 15 mins. every hour or so. I haven't lost a plant for the last 10 years. Good luck for the season!
Great video. I'm growing five different tomatoes this year, moneymaker, Chico beefsteak, and two cherry, sweet baby and one I saved from tomatoes from a shop

Very useful video Tony, thanks very much. The only feedback/query I have is regarding your comments on suckers (side shoots) - you said that you must remove them and that they bear no fruit - I think that is incorrect; the need for removing them is dependent on whether or not they are indeterminate or determinate varieties. Also, they absolutely WILL produce fruit; if left alone, a sucker will grow into another ‘main stem’, which of course can become unmanageable and a burden on nutrients if you allow too many to grow. But they definitely do produce fruits - I always propergate my suckers (some, not all) in water and then plant into soil at different stages so that I have a continuous crop throughout the entirety of the season to as late as possible as suckers will grow into full plants themselves if propagated and planted.
Thats a great tip Ellie hpwever The water drains into the soil quickly its not meant as a reservoir but if you did want it to be used like that then thats a top tip. thanks for adding it for the community to see
I tried this out on a couple of plants last year and works well...been saving all sorts of plastic bottles and jars this past winter so I can do more with this method.
Gardeners delight for me, I love them. Thanks for the advice but whenever I have neglected to prune, or when I overlooked it I have always had suckers that produce flowers and fruit. Whenever I can though I do always trim them off.
I am growing Heirloom Rainbow Blend Tomatoes that I planted from seed in the middle of last year. They managed to survive the winter season "so far". I really appreciate your tips as they will help me to better grow this strange variety of tomatoes as these videos are teaching me things that i need to know to grow healthy food in these crucial times.Thank you for taking the time to help others as its helping me!
Hi Tony, thanks for your advice about growing in pots, I have done so this season and have flowers on some of them so, will be pinching them out today 🙂 have ordered your book a few weeks ago & still waiting for Amazon to deliver. Thanks for sharing and take care 🙂

Enjoy your videos. I am new to gardening in the UK, I normally garden in the U.S. I am trying some of my favorite tomatoes, Abe Lincoln, Dad's Sunset (Yellow), Early Girl, Brandywine and Tommy Toe. They are all heirloom varities.
Thanks for the sunken bottle tip, I'm on to that next year. As for varieties, A neighbour on our allotments got his seed order wrong some years back and he received a variety called AGRO which is an Italian Plum type tom. I soon got on to it and now its the main tom I grow in my houses. lovely eater but better still its fab simply cut.fried and on toast or pasta. This year (and most years) I'm also growing Purple Ukraine, Sun Cherry Premium and Black Cherries.
@@simplifygardening good to know i make my own sauses and can them. I also make juice and salsa and can them as well. The San marzanos are a small paste tomato, similar to a Roma, but fleshier. They make a great Italian sauce with onion and basil. The Cherokee purple are large and great to slice for sandwiches as they have a deep almost smoky flavor. They’re both great producers too, giving me lots of harvest here in Louisville in the states.
Oh I think I will have to hunt down some of those seeds, having a great sauce tom is well worth it and that Cherokee Purple sounds stunning in a sandwich. thanks for getting back to me Rebekah
T Hi Tony, I am growing money maker in grow bags in my greenhouse so can't use the bottle trick and can't really keep the surface dry as you suggested , tonight ifound some blossom end rot on a handful of unrippend tomatoes , I water in the morning and at night , 10 litres between 5 plants per day , the grow bags are never sodden nor dry , do you think I'm overwatering ,all the rot was on one truss on the same plant all the restroom fine , thanks tony
Have grown tomatoes in our conservatory with mised results. Built my greenhouse a week ago - started my tomatoes off in the conservatory and have moved them to my greenhouse. I'll be following your excellent tips - far and away the best educational video on here.
I have a tiny garden so grow all my tomato plants in pots outdoors. Every year I try and fit in more of them. This year I'm growing Principe Borghese, for sauce and chutney, Gardeners Delight, Sweet Million, Orange Paruche and Rosella (a purple variety) as cordons and Red Alert, a bush variety.
Napoli paste, San Marzano, Gold Sun cherry, constoluto Florentino. I used to grow Romas for sauces but now prefer the napoli. And I always grew the purple cherokees but they ripened too fast on me and the mice got most of them. I usually also grow Indigo Rose but forgot to start them this year. For watering, I'll be adding 2 ft lengths of pvc piping into the soil as you do your soda bottles. Re fish parts. I always add some into the soil around my peach trees which love them. My sons used to catch fish for me just so we'd keep our peach trees healthy and producing well. Never had a cat problem.
Tony, Not sure if you saw the news tonight but the first and only Welsh named tomato Y DDRAIG COCH (red dragon) from Medwyns of Anglesey got GOLD in the Chelsea flower show. This is one of the varieties we are growing this year x

Thanx tony, tomatoes along with potatoes are probably my favourite crops to grow. I grow mine in the green house and my preferred varieties are gardeners delight, sun baby and sun gold but I also like to experiment with verietie and growing mediums. My best year gave me 2, 400 fruits from six plants grown in 50/50 john Guinness No2 and my riddled garden compost.
Hi Tony, love watching your channel as I learn so much, this year I'm growing yellow delight x red cherry x marmande x Italian oxheart x money maker and a new one which I got from last years gardeners world live red currant tomatoes as I've only grown the red cherry out of these before I'm really looking forward to seeing the results.
Hi Tony, aside from the hole at the bottom of the bottle, how many holes do you place along the side of the 2 litre bottle? Also, what did you use to make the holes in the bottles?
Thanks for the great tips! I'm taking notes. I have in my small garden beefsteak, Early girl, Sungold, and a few varieties that are a mystery!😁...red and yellow cherry tomatoes for sure. Great video! I'll be getting more soon. 😊💐
Hi, Tony. I love your work. I'm extremely interested to know what you think about using the 2-liter bottle watering method several years after producing this video.
Hi Tonio. Thanks forthe .tomato tips..Do u know anything about growing strawberries. Ive sowm seeds nearly.2.months ago in house and moved them.to greenhouse. Its the woodland variety They still are.about 2 inches tall.and not seem to be growing fast. please help
Hi Tony, great video! I have a question re potting on. I thought that the young plants were kept in small (3") pots to deliberately cause them to go pot bound and "force " the first truss and thereafter reproductive growth rather than vegetative. I have grown tomatoes since I was kid, every year now for nearly fifty years but it is always a learning process. This year I have eleven different plants in the greenhouse: Banana Legs, Purple Cherry, Red Pear, Sweet Casady, Tamina, Cour de Bue, Principe Borghese, Scatalone, Tigrella, St Pierre and Valencia!!
Great varieties John. Lets look at it slightly different to how you are currently, Tomatoes are tall plants, anything that gets big and puts out a lot of weight of fruit needs a good grounding. I do understand the point your making but if you were 6ft and i jammed your feet into size 1 shoes and made you shoe bound to you think your feet would support your body? Why people want to rush fruiting is beyond me, there is no need for it we have a long enough season to produce 6 and 7 trusses properly and ensure they are all ripe at the end of the season. Cramming roots is not good for any plant like anything in life good foundations are important or the house will come tumbling down. Same with plants mate
@@simplifygardening Think I'll go with that Tony next year! Related to it, do you agree with waiting till the first flower truss opens before planting out? It is always annoying that following this and the 3" pot rule the plants are always quite tatty when planted out after being so healthy earlier.
I'm growing black russian and Amish Paste which is a a giant beef tomato and a heritage one we're also growing a few tumbling toms but our most exciting ones are the black russian and the Amish paste
your right tony , there is nothing like home grown tomatoes, my dad died 2 years ago and iv,e had to rely on on shop bought tomatoes since then , truly awful things , no taste , , no smell, trying my 1st ones this year , soo looking forward to my first crop later this year , they have their 1st trusses now at the end of april and not sure if i should leave them as they are or start to remove leaves , things are happening quite quickly at the moment
You are really thorough in the way you explain everything. I enjoy watching your videos, then trying to put into practice what I've learned. Thank you :-)
Thanks for the video. I am growing Sungold, Charlie Chaplin, Roma and Thessolonika varieties. I am in Portugal, growing outdoors and really enjoy being able to harvest vine-ripened tomatoes.
Tony this it's a very concise growing guide and reassuring that I am already following some of these tips for example with the water bottles amusing 2L milk bottles in between each plant. I have 34 plants in the ground outside, 2 hanging baskets with tumbling Toms, six plants in pots outside and five plants in the greenhouse. The varieties are Tumbling Tom red and yellow Santonio, Black Russian,Sungold Gardeners Delight, Red Cherry Ace55, and Cuor di Bue.🤞

I’m a little late to this vid, but great tips Tony! You really can’t beat the taste of home grown fruits and veggies. I’m sowing Sunbaby, Outdoor Girl, Bamano and Sunstream this year 🙌🏾
Great varieties too. Good luck with them
Wonderful tips, Tony, thank you. How did the 2l water bottle system work for you please? I’m going to do it this year. Thanks, Anne
Hi Tony, I grow Orange wellington and Hawaiian Pineapple !

Let's hope we both have a great season. Im not growing bush varieties this year

Best of luck!
Thanks for sharing
great tips!!!
Thanks Melanie
Hi Tony, love watching your channel as I learn so much, this year I'm growing yellow delight x red cherry x marmande x Italian oxheart x money maker and a new one which I got from last years gardeners world live red currant tomatoes as I've only grown the red cherry out of these before I'm really looking forward to seeing the results.
Hey Karen. Thanks. Those red currant sound awesome Ive not tried them either
Melody thats brilliant. the sungold are so sweet and is always in my collection
Thanks for all these tips!
Hi Erica, thanks for viewing hope you enjoyed
Hi, Tony. I love your work. I'm extremely interested to know what you think about using the 2-liter bottle watering method several years after producing this video.
Great video and producer
Thanks Sorry for the late reply. I have been unwell. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Hi Tonio. Thanks forthe .tomato tips..Do u know anything about growing strawberries. Ive sowm seeds nearly.2.months ago in house and moved them.to greenhouse. Its the woodland variety
They still are.about 2 inches tall.and not seem to be growing fast.
How did you find banana legs, it’s one I have for this year 👍🏼
I'm growing black russian and Amish Paste which is a a giant beef tomato and a heritage one we're also growing a few tumbling toms but our most exciting ones are the black russian and the Amish paste
Black russian is a great tomato, A lot of folks are growing Armish paste this year. Ive never grown it though
Great advice thanks
Glad it was helpful!
your right tony , there is nothing like home grown tomatoes, my dad died 2 years ago and iv,e had to rely on on shop bought tomatoes since then , truly awful things , no taste , , no smell, trying my 1st ones this year , soo looking forward to my first crop later this year , they have their 1st trusses now at the end of april and not sure if i should leave them as they are or start to remove leaves , things are happening quite quickly at the moment
You are really thorough in the way you explain everything. I enjoy watching your videos, then trying to put into practice what I've learned. Thank you :-)
I appreciate that! I am glad it comes across that way as I want to provide value in my content
@@simplifygardening well you do, and you do it very well indeed. Thank you! Great having a fellow Welsh person to take advice from :-)
What do you do with all your veg mate
Thanks for the video. I am growing Sungold, Charlie Chaplin, Roma and Thessolonika varieties. I am in Portugal, growing outdoors and really enjoy being able to harvest vine-ripened tomatoes.
Valerie, Vine ripened is so much better flavoured, and great varieties there too
Tony this it's a very concise growing guide and reassuring that I am already following some of these tips for example with the water bottles amusing 2L milk bottles in between each plant.
A lot of the same varieties that Im growing. You certainly growing a lot of toms, plenty of sauce on the way :)
