      You couldn't be more wrong about Epsom salts. Epsom salts are not calcium they are magnesium sulfate. It helps the roots to absorb calcium, and yes it should go in the soil. Please correct this in a video.
      Many thanks
      Thomas Smart

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thomas I never said empsom salt is calcium I said people are told to use it for calcium, and 99% of the time its not required and is much better used as a folia feed

    • @MrOmas1984
      @MrOmas1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair enough with saying it's a common mistake but I think you should touch on why. I see this too much. There is a lot of TH-cam vids saying about b.e.r and Epsom salt saying it's a fix for calcium. A lot of beginners including myself (a while ago) fall for this until buying it and reading the ingredients.
      Please try to reach out and explain that magnesium sulfate is to help take up calcium and for healthier roots not calcium itself.
      Many thanks
      Thomas Smart

    At our ranch just before first frost we pull the tomato plants and hang them upside down with heavy twine in the barn. As winter progresses we stop by the plants and pick the ripened red tomatoes off plants. We have eaten ripe tomatoes in January. The green tomatoes ripen on the upside down plants.

    Very useful information. I'm experimenting with conditions growing in an unheated snow bound greenhouse. Of course, flower based vegetables like tomatoes aren't recommended (no pollinators and soil is too cold) but my eggplants in there are still putting out flowers so it can't be too cold in there yet even with snow on the ground. The greenhouse is double walled around to prevent air flow since stagnate air doesn't freeze things like blowing air (we see that in ice forming on top of water but not below where the same water is still cold, but not exposed to air movement which drops temps even further). But while dead air prevents freezing it also risks disease so I air out the greenhouse midday when it's warmest, and vent O2/water formation from plant chemistry, but also replenish ambient CO2.
    I'm also experimenting with overwintering tomato plants in there just to see what it takes to keep them alive in dead winter. It's easy enough to start seedlings in March if it doesn't work, but I'm determined to figure out the science of growing cold, especially in the face of possible - but hopefully unlikely - nuclear winter.

It can help in the rare case of a magnesium deficiency (but so will many organic fertilizers and amendments), but contains no calcium to remedy blossom end rot. As you say, though, regularity in watering is probably the best way to prevent blossom end rot.
