- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on January 14 talked about the pressure exerted on India over Russian oil purchase. He said, “The Ukraine conflict was a challenge, first problem was to put before Western countries, that their assessment of Russia, is not the same as us. Our experience has been positive.”

India imports 85pc of its crude oil which makes up 32 per cent of all its imports. Half of all Indians are farmers & need cheap fuel & fertilizer while its vital Steel industries need coking coal. India must therefore lap up direct discounted deals offered by Russia in crude oil & other products. The Ukraine War can not be allowed to add on to the COVID-19 ravages & aggravate problems of people of India.
The US is hypocrite supporter of democracy.
Even during Covid crisis it did not restore GSP status of India, did not lift pre-Covid tariffs imposed on $1.14 Bn of steel & aluminum imports from India, nor did it expedite any Trade Agreement to help democratic India replace some of the US imports from autocratic China. On the top of it US had blocked exports of ingredients for vaccine production while extracting HCQ imports from India.
India has historic obligation towards Russia. During 1971, it had blocked US 7th Fleet which helped India liberate Bangladesh. That freed India from the clutches of cunning British geographic surgery that denied vital sea access to India's North East by giving Chittagong region with less than 10pc Muslim population to Pakistan.
The1971 war, not only brought India's longest land border out of hostile Pakistan but freed India from British balance of power jugglery, making India a major regional power. It is a different matter that the US had then asked China to activate its border to prevent liberation of Bangladesh. Ironically US now needs India to contain China but is still hostile to Indian interests.
China has become direct beneficiary of Ukraine War as it diverts US away from SCS & gives added strategic benefit of Russian dependence on China. India must upgrade INSTC & Chennai-Vladivostok routes to increase trade with Russia to prevent Russia's exclusive dependence on China which would be against Indian & even US interests. Chennai-Vladivostok trade route through SCS will also dilute Chinese claim of SCS thereby helping US interest too. Reducing Russia's mortal dependence on China would also benefit Russia as China eyes Russian far east as its historic land.
