This is such an amazing video. Probably one of my favorites. You somehow combined a walk around video with tons of useful knowledge tips and experience which I never even thought of. I never thought about the comfort factor but I started laughing because my husqvarna zero turn is great but I’ve always “bounced around” all day. I plan on specializing in doing larger properties while also maintaining the smaller ones so a mixture of both. This helps me a ton in figuring out what I need. I plan on running redmax mowers so I’m saving up.
I'm on 2.6 hilly acres, and my back was getting wrecked mowing it on riding mower. 2+ hrs of that, I was like an old man climbing off that mower. It's like night and day with a stander, I now climb off my Bradley stander, now problems...just feel like my legs got a bit of a workout (which isn't a bad thing). Plus, it's faster mowing with it, and way more fun as well.
I have a 32inch 2020 stand on gravely A 54 inch 2018 gravely sit down A 36 inch Husqvarna belt driven walkbehind , A 36inch hydro ☆Hustler trimstar☆ **************************** Best all around mower is the ☆Hydro Hustler trimstar☆ Put a sulky on it the mower Moves through small medium As large accounts... Hi this is Wally from retirement salon service in philomath Oregon and I was just watching a video from another Lawn Care service pro cut Lawn service in Tennessee and and he mentioned the fact that that some of the stand on mowers Scag the ride twos has the larger deck but it doesn't hold the hills and so he won't use a sit-down on the hill because he's had two accidents where he was on a sit-down he wouldn't be here anymore so they need to build a mower stand on that holds hills real well so I don't know myself I use a Husqvarna push mower and I also have a Honda push mower but anyway just put that out food for thought and thank you
My personal opinion is I would rather have a sit-down any day of the week. I had to stand up more for a little over a season and experienced problems with my knees ,so I went back to a sit-down mower and within two weeks my knees were back to normal. There's too much side to side going on on a stander your knees are the weakest point while you're working. Some guys might disagree with me but I'm just glad my knees are back to normal
I mow with a Pro Stance 52, and 2 Pro turn 460s. One of the things I've noticed while mowing big properties and parks, is that when i'm on the 460's, my arms start to tingle and go numb after a while. Not saying it has anything to do with the mower, but I don't have that issue with the stander. Plus I think the stander is a lot more fun to mow with.
Jonathan, good comparison. For me, a walk-behind w/pro-slide sulky is the do-all solution. Advantages to the ZTR and stand-on mowers include lower purchase cost, superior control on steep slopes, ability to walk in tight areas when necessary, much easier access to blades, not as technical to maintain, lighter machine means more on a trailer/reduced fuel costs, clear view of tires makes it easy to eliminate turf damage when turning. IMHO, a large ZTR has the advantage with clipping collection. I can mow on my WB just as fast as a rider. Cut quality decreases with mowing speed, given any blade tip speed. I find 5-6mph is about as fast as you can go in ideal mowing conditions and still have a decent cut as long as the blades are sharp.
Awesome video with great knowledge as always! If you could only pick one, stander or a sit down to cover 1/4 to 5 acres what would you choose? I’m looking at a 52” v ride or the tiger cat.
I think it all depends. My back hurts constantly from sitting and being bucked around. That's mowing 8-8 5+ days a week. I demoed a 36 stander today and it was surprisingly comfortable. Next year I'm gonna pick one up I think to switch back and forth between sitting and standing.
What's your experience/ opinion on the stander vs sitter regarding traction and easier or more difficult to get stuck? My Exmark 60" pioneer seems to get stuck very easily. I mow my personal property a little over 2 acres with some moderate hills and ditches, thanks for the videos.
Another pro to standers are their ability to hold hills better and more safely. I had a used zero turn last year but because of all the slopes I have to deal with in Kentucky I decided to upgrade to a stander mainly because it is safer on hills.
I have a toro zero turn 54” zx5400 and I don’t know if I should sell it to buy a stand up mower or keep it and have both oh and I have around 30 accounts I’ll probably have around 20 more this year.
I want to add I also have a pro-stance and my production went from 16 yards a day, with a toro 48” belt drive, to close to 23. Same yards different machines both 48”. My 2 cents.
Maurice Washington Yes. I would finance a mower. Your work will be 10x easier, and the new mower will pay for itself by allowing you to take on a lot more work. Good luck
Good luck to you Maurice. Wishing you the best. I have seen my dad grow his lawn care business from push mowers to the riding mower, to the current zero turn, etc. Definitely invest int he equipment. Will make your life a whole lot easier. And as the previous comment said, will make room for more clients. I wish you and all the other lawn care professionals associated with this page the best. I hope your business continues to grow exponentially. Have a great day.
All good points, from my experience living in the mountains the stand on mowers are very awkward having to hang onto the mower and trying to operate at the same time, if you are sitting down you're not holding on just operating
I do lawn care business. And I have herniated disc on my lower back and seating on mowers kill my back. I have an walkbehin and is better but I don't put to much air on the velky wheels
Debating between a ferris z2 stander 52, or a ferris 2100 52 ztr. all my yards are under one acre, but come leaf season there are a ton of leaves. I have the Z1 36 stander which is amazing, I would buy the Z2 stander instantly if I didnt have leaves. Both machines have the amazing Ferris suspension technology, just cant decide which is better for me. The ZTR is also a lot more expensive. Any ideas? Thanks
Michael Zeleznik I run an Encore 52" Rage stand on mower. I've also ran an Encore 60" ztr during fall clean ups. Both with gator blades using the same chute blocker. Both had the same style deck, only difference being the width. The 52 stand on does a faster job. The quickness and maneuverability of a stand on can't be beat by a ztr. I have nothing against a rider, a stander is just much faster overall than a ztr. Even in the fall with leaf mulching. I have a few yards with the dreaded sycamore trees in them with ther big leaves. Hope this helps.
Zero turns are garbage! I used them for 3 years at the local government level in parks, ranging from 1/2 acre to 5 and I can tell you with certainty: these machines will fuck you up...especially if you do not travel at a reasonable speed (slower rather than faster). If you had to have one, you better make sure you get the best of the best suspension wise! and go slow, this speedy grass cutting culture of ours is ridiculous. If you have a few or more 1/2 acre plus properties- you are better off getting the Ferris Pro cut with 61" deck, that's a machine with a bit more comfort and ease on the back vs the zero turns. Even walkers with 48" decks are better. Walk....don't sit, if you can??? The 61" deck ProCut is more expensive, but worth it, or find it used and have it served. It will work for 1/2 acres props as well. Hey you cant accommodate everyone all the time. I know dudes that just use mowers all day-that's all! its great. If you can get 2 really good mowers like Hondas for example...you'll be fine. Find yourself 30 clients at 50 bucks each, and you're laughing. But a good lawn service with some good options at your disposal, I suggest the following: One 48" walk behind or stander, 2 really good lawn mowers, 2 trimmers, 2 blowers, good advertising and I'm sure by the second year you'll be off and running great. And maybe after you build some good cliental, perhaps you can adjust the following year to meet your needs. Also, Incorporation is not required. You can give yourself a name or as they call it "doing business as" and have your clients sign over cheques or cash in your name. End of story. Remember, if you are going to buy a top grade brand new ztr, your might as well buy the Pro cut from Ferris. Trust me, I've used it, and have worked for someone who uses it all day for the past 12 years. Just one issue I see, and that is the fact that its 61" deck, will require a 6ft wide trailer by 10ft long. If the trailer doesn't work, then sell it, they hold their value.
Hey Jonathan, I also have the 36 pro stance, great mower. Have you changed the hydro oil yet , or are you letting the dealer do it ? I enjoy your videos, Thanks
John Hayes I had my dealer service the hydros at the end of last season. I believe the mower had about 420 hours on it at the time of service. My thought process is to just let the dealer handle anything other than basic oil changes etc.. I want there to be documentation of proper service if there is ever a warranty claim down the line.
I recently purchased a Grandstand 36. So far I see many benefits to it but agreed with my larger properties the Z is the way to go. The stander is comfortable but If I am going to be on a property for a long time why not sit..lol
It might be a weird question, but bare with me as the question is from someone that does not have a zero turn mower. - I always wondered about the weight vs foot print that a ZeroTurn leaves on a lawn. Lots of my clients actually took my services because i do not use any riding mowers. They feel that it damages their lawn and makes it uneven. I do not mean about the cut itself obviously, but because of the mower's weight. what's your take or observation on that?
Jerry DO77 I think there’s certainly a strategy to marketing yourself as a “push mower” only type business. That being said, the concern of drive tracks is far and few between by most clients. As long as you’re changing directions each time you service the yard, there really should not be drive tracks or ruts.
right, it makes sense... if you always follow the same pattern that would cause it. thanks... you are such an inspiration!! lots of great people in this community, but you are my favorite and its because we feel the true honesty on every video about the fact that you truly want to help us. God bless!
walk behind with a sulky has the "lightest" footprint 3 sets of tires and the mower is lots lighter as well, i mow one and the lady does NOT want a ZTR on her property the last company left huge ruts along the strip at the side of the house(soft area caused by roof drainage).
Thank you so much... small lawns for seniors is the direction I'm going a stander is next big ticket item just not sure if its going to Gravely or Toro.
You pay up the yang yang with all those added accessories on a ZT Zero turn. Who is going to pay $10K on a zero turn not me. I would go with a Hustler Fast Track any day for $6000Kvery comfortable seat Kawasaki Engine Row Bar etc. just like on a Exmark, Scag or Gravely and cuts just as good or better. As for a Stander very pricy as well I am waiting for the Bradley SC 36 Stander to come out this Spring $3600.00 for smaller gated properties and an additional $200.00 to ship. But I am talking about my Budget that's just me.
I run a 36 prostance 52 prostance and a 60 zyr sir ride seat we use all 3 every day and a 30 inch commercial exmark we have a 20x8 enclosed with 8 trimmers 4 hedge trimmers pole saw pole hedge 3 backpack blowers sprayers etc. but we do large dealerships big yards etc. took years to get all that and we rotate the mowers every 2 years at 1,000 hrs.
Florida turf - how do you stay so slim and fit Cuz a lot of the lawn people on TH-cam have all the fancy equipment like you but they get really fat and lazy Cuz the fancier their machines then the lesser work calories they burn?
Crisp Thoughts crossfit lol. Jonathan is my brother, so I can attest to the fact that he eats a healthy diet, and gets in the gym multiple days a week.
Do you use both of those mowers in your business? What kind of properties cause you to buy the ZTR? Btw, I had to search 'ZTR MOWERS' on the Internet to find out what it meant. Why is a stand-up mower called a 'standard' instead of just a 'stand-up mower?' It can't be cause there are more stand-ups being used on residential property cause I see more sit-downs and I rarely see either. A regular push (or self-propelled) mower is used by far more often then either of the these other two styles, and I don't know why anyone needs to invest so much money unless it's to do less walking, or a larger radius which means faster finishing. If speed is not important, and you don't even get to sit down to prevent getting as tired from standing up all day, then housing/blade radius is the only advantage I see. Age is a factor. The older you get, the more you can't stand all day without backaches. I could make a lot more money if my body held out longer before the back pain started just from standing up a couple of hours. And unless the lawns you're cutting have potholes in them, I don't know why a ZTR would jar you around. What is that big padded thing for on the stand-up mower? Is the driver supposed to lean into it for comfort? It looks like a car seat flipped upside down. I want to be your FREE consultant when you make a youtube video. I'll point out everything that's missing and then you can re-record it to include everything in the final version.
A 'Free Consultant' lol, what could possibly go wrong with that! Great video, good advise and some very appropriate and considered replies that have been hugely insightful, thank you all, yeah, even Joe Doe. We all need a laugh once in a while and thats me out. Have a great weekend all!
Very true, on my 5 acre, I wish I had a sit on mower but that is all. I have 2 Standon and I could not imagine using sit on those property. Great advice. My first commercial was a 52 but I only use that on 4 property and that is after 2 years later. The 30 and 36 is all I need. Lucky i moved to a 5 acres to utilize the 52. Aweomse advice,
I see a lot of companies with sit down, stand up and a 36 walk behind. Best to have the best of all worlds. Standup are horrible on steep sideways hills. I think its best to choose wisely. Stand-up mowers ive learned you do more trimming.. Wlk behinds you can pop wheelies around certain areas and run sideways on hills. Standups are faster but best on flat properties. Starting out its best to use a walk behind hydro
Good video and agree with your points. We use 60" Toro Zero turns for our big commercial work and 36" grandstands for the residentials. Tried 30" walk behinds....that was not efficient

What about under trees especially when you are tall ?
In 85% of all cases, I find stand on mowers superior, to a rider or sit down mower.
Starting out with 1 mower what is the best all around deck size?
Probably a 48 and keep a push mower with you

Dealer support and I like the controls/ergonomics

Stepping off is always easier then standing up from a seating position. Thanks for the video.
Then = time; than = comparison
Are you still using the same mowers?
Running all ProStances now. 4 of them.

SkiffinIt Anything over an acre I prefer a sit down
This was a very timely posting for me Jonathan! Thanks for the opinions on the stander vs sit-down!
What's better on back, stander vs suspension seat?

who makes big commercial gravely zero turn mowers?
It’s better to stand than to sit...bottom line!!!Great Video!!!

What dose any one thing of the walk behinds for a new starter?
Also a little easier to get under branches on evergreen trees with the standing mower.
I need one
Yeah This year I’ve ran a a ztr with NO seat suspension at all. My lower back is really beat up from it. Definitely going stander next year.
Did you join the stander cult
What kind of chute blocker is that on the ztr?
Good advice sir!!!

Fixt100 can I ask what model of mower you have ?
I'm currently using a Scag rider I love the way Scag stripes, how's Gravely stripe ?
Bo Warm season Turf grass doesn’t stripe well. I couldn’t give an accurate answer to that
Gravely is close to top in define stripes, in fescue, right up there with toro.
Personal preference
No matter what, the standard that the owner pays to the maintenance gas cutter is less than $55/day.
That is based from 7 to 7.
Thank you so much... small lawns for seniors is the direction I'm going a stander is next big ticket item just not sure if its going to Gravely or Toro.
You did a review of the pro-stance around a year ago. Do you have any updates on it? Any problems/compliments?
Love the mower. Nothing bad to say about it.
My tensioner pulley self destructed at 290 hours
Solid advice
You pay up the yang yang with all those added accessories on a ZT Zero turn. Who is going to pay $10K on a zero turn not me. Easier to pop a wheelie in a stander too
30 acres. Sit down rider hands down
Oh, ya def! Cup holder, canopy, phone charger, the works =)
Haha... and a 102" cut.
Thanks......

Btw thumbs up. Great vid
Have a great weekend all!

beauty mate.. ;)
I bought a stander, best thing I ever bought for sure . I cut a lot of church yards so the small wheel base is a real advantage
Comfort? I pay my guys to abuse my equipment.
And which one is better, when you have to bagger?
