    I'm fortunate enough to work full time as an animator at a game studio and I think one of the reasons they want me onboard isn't necessarily because I'm the best animator in the world, but because I know how to take critique and feedback and turn it into bullet-points I need to address, rather than attacks on my skills.
    Not being to defensive about your work and keeping in mid that there's a directorial vision outside of your personal vision is super important in my experience.

    for the god controller, i wish it had been stressed upon enough in the beginning of my studies, the professor just mentionned it quickly once (I'm just a student but hey I've completed my 2nd year animating), i had the misfortune of animating the god controller during a walk cycle and another run cycle. Needless to say i regretted having done that later on because i couldn't control the pace anymore instead of just having the cog doing the translation because i had to have a full mental prediction of both cog and god controllers. lesson learnt!
    oh and thanks gor the ghost hours tip, and for bringing the whole picture in, not just as one of the self-care tips, it really does have a percussion on other co-workers and on future projects in ways we would not predict!

    2:33 can u explain why using a box ? i mean if i just animate the best way possible and render it, will the box make a difference ? i didnt get the box part if u can just explain a bit & how did u bring the opacity of the box down im just trying to learn

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, the point of the box is so that you can experiment and figure out your characters movement without having to spend the extra time moving the dozen and dozens of controllers for each pose. Once you have the timing down, you can bring in your character and match the Boxes location. It saves a ton of time.
      Here's a video where I go more in depth on the topic: th-cam.com/video/J_88zj-18q4/w-d-xo.html

    I really like the box idea, I feel like many don’t use that method either but idk. Would it be as easy to animate the torso for a idea of timing and spacing and hide the other areas of the characters maybe? Or would a cube still be better and line up the character with the cube. And use reference the same time with this method of course.

    Great video mate.
    About the not being able to make the shot during the normal 40h week without ghost hours or OT.
    Will you not run the risk of being fired then?
    I mean if this is a reoccurring thing?
    Or will they, as you said just allocate the shot so someone else and give you an shorter/easier one.
    B/c they saw talent in you, as they hired you in the first place.
    And thus letting you grow into a better, faster animator with time?
    Ohh an I have to aske where do you work where they use Blender and not Maya?

    • @BrianKouhi
      @BrianKouhi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends per studio, if you're working at a studio that isn't toxic, they will just re-allocate shots without any resentment. If your deadlines Are unrealistic, it's not on you if you can't finish them, it's on management. And if management doesn't know their timeline is unrealistic, then it will remain unrealistic.
      I feel once you have this "F It" attitude, your life and mental will improve drastically.
      If a company decides to fire you because you wouldn't put in ghost hours, and they aren't willing to Pay OT. You're better off not working there... Which is why I suggest all artists to financially educate themselves, so they don't find themselves in a toxic workspace with no alternative.
      And I use to work at Tangent Studio, on a Netflix epic. It was made almost entirely in Blender! I've since changed companies to have more time dedicated to TH-cam and other personal projects. So now I'm back on Maya at work 😁

    Yo man I'm always digging these videos just sitting back on my couch watching this nodding. The ahole part is so true man I know 2 people I met. They were fired from their kead position. I also agree with the ghost hours it's not worth it man.
    Especially if the shot is boring as hell I plan on focusing hard on it. Plus if it's a hard deadline I'll focus hard. Yes your supervisor & managers do not want you to sugar coat deadlines. I had bad 2020 quarterly review but this year I'm kicking ass.
    Anyway I'm curious about this blender stuff I mainly use maya at home and personal work. But it doesn't hurt to learn new stuff.

    Given the 100, 1,000, 10,000 hr rule, you are 70% to Mastery, but that's only IF you were doing focused practice. 😄
    Then again there's ppl that push back on anything like that, e.g. search for the article from 2019: "10000 hour rule wrong really master skill"
    Between the two sides, I actually tested this idea when I got "punished" being forced to be paid to sit on my butt at a FDNY EMS station doing nothing. After I couldn't play WoW anymore (I smiled too much I guess), I took up classical guitar, practicing 6-8 hrs a day while being paid "to be punished." It took me ~5,000 hrs to be able to play well enough (over 8 months of punishment) until my coworkers not only didn't want to kill me for sounding so bad after that time on task, but actually came back to the station to eat lunch _listening to Baroque music_ while they ate and relaxed. I played the pieces at about half speed, but with feeling... It did seem like I was half way there. Even the female coworkers then decided I was attractive "because I have skills." Don't ask.
    I practiced self defense and it took me about 10 years to actually get good. I became untouchable, but then I learned the Master Fighter _wins (gets what he wants),without having fought!_ Once you're engaged in a fight you've already lost. Derp on me...
    So, I _lived_ the 10,000 hr rule which seems to be accurate, even with my over a year sculpting bare naked ladies in ZBrush. It's amazing how long a guy can concentrate on such a subject... Also seemed to follow the 10,000 hr rule.
    So, don't feel bad if you "have only" 7,000 hrs of practice... that's not my intention... you're almost there! or already there given the curmudgeon article cited above BY ROB NIGHTINGALE, PUBLISHED DEC 07, 2019 (his caps not mine.)
    Stay safe and enjoy... and is your animation course complete now? $395 is not a trivial amount of money.
