Took me a while to figure this out, but if your unit is below 2.28 version (1.94 version as an example), you will need to update to 2.28 before you update to 2.8. They do say this on the website, but it was a little unclear. They state that some units may need to update to 2.28 first. I think it should say -- Must update to 2.28 before you update to 2.8, unless you already have that version. Got it to work though on the HELIX 9 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G3N . Formatted 32 gb card to FAT32, put 2.28 on it. Put it in unit. Powered on. It updated then restarted. Waited for it to boot, then I powered it down, took card out, formatted it again to FAT32. Put Version 2.8 on the card. Put card into unit, then powered unit on again. Let it update and restart. It would not read the card with version 2.8 on it until I updated it to 2.28. Hope this is helpful to someone.

No pop up when we put the card in with the 2.750. Realized it was because our SD card was 128gb and you can only put in a card 32gb or smaller.
Same here. I am using a 32 GB card, but it doesn’t pop off as it popped off when the last 2.660-update has been installed.
To be honest, I am getting annoyed with this lifecycle-stuff being cancerous to be installed but not working properly.
I feel Huminbird's updates are the hardest to do, very confusing!

Yes it is very confusing and difficult to download to the card, and to the units.
I would like to see the box stores to be Able to do any updates. If they sell hummingbird they should be able to do updates 🙄.
Hummingbird is not the easiest to use especially if you do it the way this guys tells you to do. I find it very useful to do the following…before you try to download the software onto the SD card. Put the SD card in the computer and format the card this basically just deletes everything off the card. Then go to the hummingbird unit take out ALL zero line/map cards and do a backup of waypoints onto a completely separate SD card. That way if they get wiped out you still have them. It is good to back these up every so often anyhow if you have some that you can’t live without. Select restore defaults on the setup page. Take the empty formatted SD card and insert it in the hummingbird unit. This will encrypt the card this makes it visible/compatible to the unit. Now take the empty SD card out of hummingbird unit.. power unit off and take empty encrypted SD card to your computer and download the files to the empty SD card from wherever you saved the software updates. Once the files are downloaded to the SD card go to the unit and power unit up let it boot up and get to a screen. I always use my 2D screen but doesn’t matter. Insert the SD card and follow the on screen prompts. I have 2 different units Helix 12 Helix 10 both act different at times sometimes the units will restart after the update sometimes I have to restart it? I have found no pattern as of yet. Check in system status screen if you have the updated software and base map version that you where trying to download. Verify you still have your waypoints… if not download them from the separate SD card we downloaded them on before we started the update. Insert you Zero line/map cards.This is how I have encountered the least problems while doing software updates. Not saying this will solve all but it will cause less problems if you do it this way. Worked for the helix7 G4’s update (2.660). Thanks. But doesn’t work for the latest one (2.750). It just doesn’t recognize the microSD card. Do you have any other suggestions? This is really annoying for a unit worth around almost 1 k…
Update: it worked with a 32 msd card. Just wait a while, since the update takes a while to being fully loaded and recognized.
Could having older software versions make my unit stop reading 2D and depth correctly?

For anyone, who wants to update to the latest V2.770: if you use a 32 GB microSD card (or smaller), it takes a while to fully load and recognize the SD card, since the update is somewhat larger.
How long will the update take to load?

No info on disconnecting other devices and peripherals? It sure causes headaches if you don't.
My only question is what does he have his units mounted to? We're having problems getting a Helix 7 in my Fish-n-Ski due to the wrap-around windshield, and the mounts he has would be a perfect solution!

This process doesn't work - can't even get the prompt to load the software update. Tried everything they suggested twice. Frustrated!!
I discovered after calling the Support Team, If you are trying to update software for HELIX 7 MSI GPS G3 NAV+; you should select and install the HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G3 software. (The Helix 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G3N software should not and will not load on HELIX 7 MSI GPS G3 NAV+ units). I was able to update my older software V1.94 directly to V2.320; followed by updating my Basemap software v1.052 directly to V2.010. By the way, the Basemap load progress sat at 0% for 3-5 minutes then completed at 100%. At first I thought the loading process was stuck.
Just purchased a helix 7. Went to hummingbird site. Downloaded the update and followed instructions. Screen came up that recognized the sd card, but no transfer occured and the two prompts did not appear. Can anyone help

Typically if you are updating software on a SOLIX/ONIX, we would need to know what you have in the unit now in order to confirm what will be required next.
For HELIX and all other models that is not ONIX or SOLIX, you should be able to update to the latest version without having to "step up" the software as all previous updates are included in the latest version available.
I have done this over and over. followed the instructions very closely. I keep getting a notification saying update file invalid once i get to inserting the card into the head unit. I'm attempting to update to the 2.28v because the current version is 2.010, what's wrong? is my unit corrupted faulty?

yes but it will still only give you the resolution the screen has.
my helix 5 chirp gps g2 can't update it. I follow all the steps and when it restarts it follows the previous version. and I need to update it because it doesn't save my waipoints and I don't know why. Thank you, I hope you solve my doubts. My Helix 10 CHIRP SI updated the software and map from the 32gb SD card with no problem but my Helix 10 CHIRP DI unit wouldn't read the card regardless of whether I powered up then inserted the card or inserted the card and powered up. What I finally had to do was download the Fishsmart app to my phone, pair it to the DI via Bluetooth, then downloaded the software update from the phone to the DI. Next, since the maps can't be downloaded from the Fishsmart app, I inserted the SD card back into the DI and viola' it started the update.
I’m curious if their are any updates planned for the ICE HELIX 7 CHIRP GPS G3 that will “ADD” New features coming up? It would sure be nice with such a costly investment to gain a few software upgrades in the near future.

Humminbird Helix 10 G3N MSI+ The most difficult part was getting the unit to read the 32G class10 card. I made several attempts back and forth putting the card in with the unit running and it did not work, starting it with the card already in did not work. Finally it worked on a startup. After authorizing installation steps and a 30 second update the unit froze on restart at the "Humminbird simply. clearly. better." screen. There was no current software version 2.180 banner at the top. I waited 6 minutes no buttons would respond and I had to pull the power cord. That was a little tense. It did work fine on reboot with update installed.

If you have a unit that is within the 2 year warranty, we would strongly advise to contact our Technical Support Department at 1-800-633-1468 to report the issue in the event this occurs again. Amazing... you press yes, then skip the most important part.... showing the update, and explaining how long it should take, and if there is an on screen indication. No clue how long mine should sit after saying yes. 5 min, an hour?
I have a helix 12 mega si g3n. I've never done any updates so I am like 3 years behind in updates. I have to update to UPDATE 2.280 first before the current version. I go through all the steps stated in this video. It goes to the red updating screen but then the unit turns it self off and reboots. Then proceeds to ask me the same prompts as before. This is just an endless circle that gets me nowhere.

@@DirtNap69 yeah bud. You have to send it to hummingbird. They did what ever they did to fix it. It was only 2-3 weeks. Faster then I assumed it would be for them to process and fix it. My issue was I'm an idiot and misplaced my receipt. I purchased mine from a bass pro less then 2 years ago should of been under warranty. Hummingbird said my unit was from 2018. So my unit sat at bass pro for over 2 years before I bought it.
Have all the issues been fixed in the past year with all the reported lock ups of the systems? I've been holding off till the update from this past summer was updated as there were so many comments about issues...

Can you confirm the model in question? In most cases the lock up issues that were reported were found to be associated to lack of power that the unit(s) required for full operation. In other cases bad nav data was also in play. Please feel free to reply to this message if you should have further questions.
I have the Helix 9 G2N Mega and the console and the Helix 9 G2N DI at the bow and have had great luck updating so far but haven't tried the latest with all the rumble on the net about it. My batteries are always topped up so if that's the case, I'll do the update and not worry about it, thanks!
I've downloaded both files and copied them to my micro card. My unit doesn't see my card when I load it in.
I used a 128gb micro card....maybe that's the problem???
Question: I'm getting ready to update my HELIX 10 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N to
v. 2.660 so I can install Mega Live. The current software is 2.440. The instructions states that I need to disconnect any Advanced Accessories connected to the unit, the GPS receiver, Interlink, etc. How do I do that?
We updated our helix 9 gen 3 si and di and never removed anything. Only set to default first. Inserted chip and followed prompts.

Ive tried all of this now 10 times and the unit will not go into update mode. I used a 16gb sd card. Thoughts?
My Helix 10 is also not seeing the sd card.
Their website says to use a 32gb card.
You have to use a 32 gb sd card. Ive had the same problem and after talking to hummingbird they say You can only use a 32gb sd. You can't use a larger SD card either.

Why is it necessary to remove the SD card after the download is complete? Can the slot not be used to store the card until it’s used again?
Most units only have 1 card slot and it's typically where the advanced map card goes.
Personally, what is the average upgrade time for a Helix 7 Chirp DI G2? I followed the procedure indicated, but my Helix has entered a cycle of turning off and it does not go away, there is a good time. Need help.

What's the full name of the model you bought? Does it say chirp or DI or SI?
what size SD card can you use? website says 32gb or smaller?? that mead a 2 GB will work??

I try to update my Helix 5 CHIRP G2 to 2.320 but after the Abort update prompt, I click left and the units shows brifly updating then just restarts. I use a FAT32 formated 16GB Class10 SD. Any ideas? My current version is 2.110

Typically when the update is complete the unit will reboot. When your unit comes back up, is the unit not showing that the update took? If that is the case, can you supply a direct message with your email? We will gladly send you an alternate update lower than the latest version to see if that will go through? We will also require your unit's serial number.

My helix 5 doesn't have that sd slot, it only has a microSD on the side and my computer says it needs to be formatted, but it won't format it. What do I do?

If you have the MicroSD card in a SD adapter we would recommend checking the sliding lock mechanism on the adapter to ensure it's not in the locked position. This will hinder the card from being formatted.
If you have checked this and the computer still cannot format the card, you may need to reach out to your computer manufacturer to troubleshoot the operations of the computer and card reader as we cannot assist on this matter pas the currently provided suggestion.
If I have two hummingbird units linked to the same network do I have to update each unit individually or do I update one and the network handle the one the sd card was not inserted into?

I had the SD Card installed (with the .bin file copied to it) when I powered the unit on, It prompted me to update the device and asked for a confirmation to reset to default. I was updating from v1.640 (Helix 7 CHIRP SI GPS G2N). I hope this helps.

My mega360 and Helix 9 went out with 2.8 update and 1.2 mega live. 9 won’t accept 2.8 update. Will try again with new microsd that’s been encrypted.

@@HumminbirdTV I have to honest with you. I used to program computers and I would say I am pretty adept at software issues but the upgrade process is completely broken, It shouldnt be this hard. I followed everything by the book (multiple times) for the Helix 7 SI DI G3, and watched others on youtube to see if I missed something. Always says "file is invalid". I am giving up, its not worth the headache.

Typically when you receive the message on the unit that File is Invalid, this indicates that the software you are trying to load to the unit has already been loaded.
Can you check the System Status View of your unit to confirm what version software you have in the unit currently?

My app connects to both helix's but it doesn't give an option to update. Only thing it offers is to forget the unit. Any ideas? I also tried to update using an sd card but neither of my units would start the process. It's didn't read anything
John, thank you for contacting Humminbird on this matter. Can you confirm the models of your systems? Also, most Humminbird systems can only update using a card of 32GB or less in size. If your card was larger than this, it could be the reason that it didn't go through. Also, with the FishSmart app, it can take 1-2 weeks from the date of the release of the software on our website to appear on the app as an available update.
Will restore to factory setting erase your waypoints?

Typically performing a Restore Defaults does not erase Nav Data. However we always recommend to backup any nav data that you have stored within your unit periodically in the event that loss of data occurs or the unit malfunctions.
If you perform the option that is Format Nav Directories, you will surely lose all waypoints, routes and tracks stored within the unit.

Can you please confirm the unit's serial number and full model name?
Can you also confirm the name of the file that was downloaded to the card for the update?
The SD card should be 32GB in size or smaller for updates to a Humminbird fishing system. Being as the unit is encrypting the card it would indicate it is reading it however is not recognizing the update.

I wish it was this easy to do. I've done it exactly like he shows in the video, but it wont recognize the sd card. I'm about to give up and just stop using all this technology to catch fish. It should not be this hard to do a simple update.

Had so much trouble updating my helix 7. I was using a 32g micro card and every time i powered it on with the card in, it would power off. So what i did was power on first then inserted the chip and it worked for me that way.

It is not usual for the unit to shut down when the card is in the unit prior to powering the unit on and only stay on if you power the unit on first.
Can you confirm if you have any other cards at your disposal that you can see if this can be duplicated with a blank card or chart card? If so, it is possible the card reader itself may need to be inspected by our service center.
After asking if i was ok to update and pressing right cursor the screen went back to normal screens but never shut off? Any help??
When updating a system you should get two questions. The first question would be if you wish to update so you answer Yes by pressing the right arrow key. The second question will ask if you would like to Abort the update so you would want to press the Left arrow key. From here you should see the update in progress indicator stating Software is updating. It is possible you are hitting the right arrow key to many times which will cancel the update.

Yes, if you download the update bot the MSI and the MDI to the same card, the units are software specific so will only read and download the update intended for itself.

You have to shut down and restart. Had me going for a while but it's buried in the standard instructions.
Do I use the place where my map card is.? Or is there a separate port I'm unaware of?

Hello. Why do you specify the size of the SD card for flashing only 32 GB ??? Why can't I use a 2 GB card if the upgrade program doesn't exceed 70 MB ???
We recommend a 32GB card as it is the largest that our units will be able to utilize for this application. Anything smaller than this will be ok but some units, depending on current software and so forth may not be able to use a card smaller than a 2GB and some 4GB. In the very least the update will not be recognized if the unit doesn't recognize the card.
@@HumminbirdTV All right, put a new firmware 2.180 with a 2 GB card. Tried to install SD on 64 GB, helix 8 " mega + G3N, works with it, writes normally. Another question is whether you can view the recorded material in the program RIF master 2.0 ??? If you can, how do you do it ???

Concerned! I forgot to restore defaults on my main side imaging unit (Helix G2N SI) before updating the software to the latest version. I know HB strongly recommend doing this before installing an update so how much risk is the unit and what do I need to look for if I have an problem? Also, on the next software update if I restore defaults and update the new version will I "skip over" any problems I may have caused on this go-round?
Paul, the restore defaults is strongly advised but is not going to cause issues if this was not done prior to the update. If the unit is not performing as good as it was or better than it was after the update, we would recommend to restore defaults to ensure it was done after the update was complete. Otherwise, restoring defaults prior to the next update that may come is not going to "correct" any issues that may have arose due to not performing this task prior to the previous update. Go to the setup menu (from any view, hit the Menu and then Menu again, then scroll over to the Setup tab). Switch the user mode from Angler Mode to Custom Mode to find those settings in the menu again.
When in Angler Mode, some items are hidden from the menu to make operating your HELIX quick and easy by displaying the most popular settings and options. Custom Mode provides full access to all settings and features.

I haven't updated the software on our helix 7 gen 2 si since we've bought it 2 seasons ago. I'd like to update the software, but I was initially worried we would lose all of our way points. After watching this video, I think i'm now under the impression that all of our way points are saved on our States Map SD card, and we would be removing that card to perform the update. Am I thinking about this correctly and there is no concern about losing our way points because they're saved to another SD card?

The waypoints are actually saved to the unit. We recommend backing them up to an SD card prior to making any software updates. This should walk you through how to backup your data: bit.ly/2T3HLgE

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens th-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

Humminbird, this process and the numerous instructions to update software does not reflect well on your ability to innovate let alone serve your customers. Why can’t we just plug a cable into the computer then plug the other end into the Helix and follow directions. It like we are in the MS DOS era. Why not update over wifi or Bluetooth . We can do it with complex phone software. This is bush league.
