    I grew up in Japan. Lived there 1983-2001. I remember watching the last episode of Dragon Ball and was really sad thinking that the series was going to end. After the ending theme song, Goku pops up and said something like his adventures would continue. My brother and I jumped up from the couch screamed and gave it each other high fives. I love Dragon Ball.

      You are insanely lucky. I can already imagine how much you lost your shit when you learned Goku was an alien at the start of Z at the time. In the west, our first look introduction to him was that he was revealed as an alien and since we never grew up with kid Goku, it's not much of a shock

    I grew up in Germany in the 90s where they aired the original Dragonball first & I can honestly say that the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament arc is one of my favourite arcs in the entire series. It was hard being a personal of color - i got bullied a lot by my peers and had no friends but Chibi Goku was always there to comfort me when I got home. He always helped me feel a little less lonely. I still remember how shocked I was to see him as an adult and then to see Chichi as an adult too and seeing them get married before Goku defeat the demon king's son???? Couldnt have asked for a better story.

      Me too :D i remember watching DB always after the school. I was so shoked when Goku was grown up all of the sudden. But it was so freaking cool. I was in middle of growing up myself and seeing one of my biggest heroes growing up the same time as me just made me go nuts.

      I think as a toddler his power level was like 10 and after many battles and a lot of training he might have been able to go toe to toe with the weaker gods of destruction after the Tournament of Power and by the time of the end of Z, after some 40 years on earth he might be already stronger than most of the destroyers.

    • @anxofernandez3344
      @anxofernandez3344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Daltonownzyoulol it's a good indicator of how useless the gods and angels are and how bad of a job they did. If the Kais had been looking they'd have noticed the ability Saiyans have to get exponentially stronger, and if they knew there had been a Super Saiyan God before, it's because they could access God ki and that opens the door for Ultra Instinct and Destroyer ki. The gods are written to be pretty stupid.

    • @Daltonownzyoulol
      @Daltonownzyoulol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anxofernandez3344 if i remember correctly, Jiren was already stated to be stronger than the god of destruction of his universe right? which is the 2nd strongest after Beerus
      and white hair UI non mastered wiped him
      at this point in the manga, Goku is dozens if not 100x stronger than at that point, they really need to state just how strong Beerus actually is and Whis cause by this point he def "shouldve" been pass at least Beerus lol
      and thats just basic mastered UI, not to mention using mastered UI in ssjgod blue

    • @anxofernandez3344
      @anxofernandez3344 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Daltonownzyoulol we don't really know how strong Beerus is but when he starts training Vegeta in the manga, he mops the floor with the Prince and it doesn't look like Beerus was going all out, not even close. That's a Vegeta post TOP, post Broly movie, post Moro...and he's still far away from Beerus. Goku in UI is obviously much more powerful, but it's implied that Beerus at 100% could still beat him.

    what i appreciate the most is how much this actually inspired other series to do the same thing later on. it made it OK to let characters get older and show that they can still be popular and not lose readers (or even gain readers). It made things more realistic, that time exists in these worlds, that it does take weeks/months/years to travel and go on adventures.

    I remember watching DragonBall Z via fansubs, after the Ocean Dub. It was the Android story, and when I first Goku's Japanese voice, I was curious as to who his voice actor was. Then I went online and found he was voiced by Masako Nozawa. I was surprised and jaw-dropped that Goku was voiced by a woman in the original Japanese. I was even more surprised when I found out that Nozawa also voiced Gohan, Goten, Bardock & even Turles, all by changing her vocal range. I'm still blown away that Nozawa still voices Goku, but you can tell that her age is a factor when it comes to the characters screaming. Hell, as long as she is still able to voice Goku, then more power to her.

It meant a lot when Goku arrived grown up at the Tenkaichi Budokai. Now at my thirthies is still one of my favorites moments of all Dragon Ball. I never took any of the shows seriously, I just have fun with them by watching from beginning to end. And I’m planning on rewatching DB in Japanese sub version since I’ve already watched it in dub version from beginning to end. I’m glad that Masako Nozawa was allowed to voice once more when Toriyama aged Goku up. Great video bro!

    I remember also that Toriyama already tweaked him slightly, before that Tournament making him a bit taller and with slightly longer limbs because it was hard to draw fight scenes given how short and chubby Gokū was, at the star of the series, and without the Nyoibō was even worse, also he wanted to get rid of the tail because was a nightmare to always figure out a way to add it in a natural way and also not having it in the way. (I assume that this is also why Saiyans, most of the time, have their tail held around the waist.)

    The fact that the voice actor of kid Goku also voiced adult Goku is very interesting and I understand why, although by now I think Goku's voice should have changed in all versions though, he's well in his 40s by the end of Z.
    In Spain we were first introduced to the original DB in the regional languages (Galician, Catalan and Basque) and Goku's voice changed with time. In Galician there were slight changes in Goku's voice even as a kid, then a different actor for young adult Goku and yet another one I think after Goku and Gohan left the Room of Spirit and Time. The last one has a much deeper voice, more adequate for a grown man like Goku. Gohan and Goten were voiced by the same actor as kid Goku until they grew up. I think the same person who originally dubbed young Goku also did Gohan and Goten as adults but changing his voice to sound different from each other and also from Goku.

    Pretty sure Goku only spent a month in the Time Chamber when he trained under Kami. That's what Piccolo said in DBZ anyway, that Goku could barely survive a month in it as a kid. Still, it was probably that month in the Time Chamber that caused him grow so much more than he did between the 21st and 22nd tournaments. Maybe Goten and Trunks' growth spurt in the Super Hero movie was due to them following Goku's example?

    My first exposure with Goku and Dragon Ball was in the '80 in Hong Kong, in the back from a bootlegged manga (that was a compilation manga with Doraemon and Dr Slump).

    I first found out about Dragon Ball through the Namek arc as a kid. But had the plug and had like 5 Dragon Ball VHS tapes in Japanese.

    @Geekdom101,
    Long question warning..
    If Dragon Ball (and Sailor Moon) were successful in early 90s Japan,
    How well do you think those series would do in America,
    if Fox Kids had picked them up in 1993 ?
    .. Then prime time sneak peaks of S.M. season 2 and the (Uncut) 1st three Ocean Dub Dbz Movies in 1994 ?
    (along with the sneak peaks that Fox had, of Phoenix Saga & Out of the Past X-Men & Mutiny Mmpr) ?

    I’m a little late but I definitely agree because it started as a fun show and I been telling people this and I think why people take it so seriously is because dragon ball z is more of a serious show

    DB’s so special for so many reasons and precedents like this.
    Narratively imperfect, yes, but culturally iconic.
