This is a Great Depression Era Recipe for a cheap and easy dessert called Apple Charlotte. One of the ingredients is bread crumbs so it's a great way to use up old and stale bread. Nothing goes to waste.

What a nice, uncomplicated fresh apple dessert that concentrates on the apples and is a great way to use up "stale bread particles". I could have a lot of fun playing with this recipe, maybe adding a bit of cinnamon/nutmeg/ginger to the sugar, maybe using brown sugar, maybe drizzling a bit of honey or molasses between the layers...lots of room to experiment. Thanks for showing us this great recipe!

How great that you could get some apples right from the orchard! This looks so easy to make, and the name is delightful! We will definitely try this as a fall dessert. We have a place called “Apple Hill” not to far from us, and we try to get up there to buy fresh apples (and their homemade apple pies!) and there is quite a difference in taste with the fresh apples. At least, we think so. Fresh apples are much much juicier than store apples. Second best is when our stores get in apples from Washington state. We will definitely bake some Apple Charlotte!
We have quite a few apple orchards on Long Island. A few are not far from home and others are out east and it’s a longer trip. I agree apples from the orchards are the best tasting. Grandpa and I like to go to the orchard because we get beautiful apples and they taste so good❤️Grandma👩🏻
My MoM said that during the depression era those Apple peels, if the kids didn't want them, were used as a treat to the animal(s) in their farm/pasture.
My mom said her pet Raccoon like them with a lil bit of used lard slathered on them.
Hmm, Raccoon's are Interesting.

Did you ever make Apple Dolls?
When there was a surplus of Apples my MoM said they would carve a face into the peeled apple (leave the core) and then bake it at 300 for hour or so until looked like a shrunken head to me (pictures). It would make a fun day of Halloween kids & parents thing to do together along with carving those Jackolanterns 🎃 I
I dont have children but Im going to give it a try this year, just for giggles. Hope it doesn't sound too weird.... lol... its Halloween so why not! 🙂
No I have never made Apple Dolls but years ago my daughters made them. They each carved a face on an apple after they were done they just let the apples air dry for a week or two. They looked like a shrunken head. I know they also dressed the dolls and they had fun making them. I’m sure you will enjoy making one.❤️Grandma👩🏻

Love apple dishes this time of year! Really is the essence of fall. What variety did you use for the charlotte, Grandma? I missed the orchard peaches this year, as the season ended a few weeks early, and haven't yet been out there for apples. Probably will pick some up this weekend, but in PA (going to a wedding there). There's a farm market/bakery in the town of Delaware Water Gap that makes AMAZING apple dumplings. I have been thinking about them for 12 years and am excited to get some more this year. Probably pick up a delicious chicken pot pie there on the way home, too.
The variety I used were 545. How nice that you are going to a wedding in PA. I hope you have nice weather for the trip. Enjoy the apple dumplings. I would be excited also after waiting 12 years. I know this is a depression recipe and I really like it but going to add cinnamon and substitute brown sugar to change it up.
