this was such a great video! i’ve been researching to start multi-day hiking and so much of the content on youtube is America-focused, its rlly nice to get some Aussie input
Awesome! Thank you! so glad it helped. I'm currently working on a new one as I have splurged on a few new things. Hope to put it out in about a week. Happy hiking I hope you love it.
That's a great video Kate! I've watched tons of these kind of videos and this one is certainly one of the best ones I've seen. Your experience shines through as you explain the reasons for the decisions you've made in regard to the gear you use.
Enjoy your walk, stay safe and have a ball on the 7 day hike. Thank you for some excellent ideas. Did a day walk with my son at Peats Ridge last week , wow I am unfit lol!!. We are planning tentatively in 12 mths or so to do the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
Hi and welcome. Thanks for stopping in to watch and comment. And thanks for such a lovely comment at that too 😀. Sound like you are living the dream on a sailboat in Seattle. Fair winds and following seas.
It is interesting looking though someone else’s pack. I have a micro torch permanently attached to the draw string of the main compartment. In the dark it easily comes to hand, often just so I can find my head torch.
Just getting into hiking and preparing for first weekend hike. Thanks so much for your ideas. Very useful. Packing tampons not only for emergencies but for tinder cracked me up! My biggest worry is water. I drink heaps of water and just can't fathom how I'm gonna be able to carry enough water.
Haha thanks a lot mate. Glad it’s helpful. I love planning hikes where I know there will be water near camp. It saves so much weight. I drink heaps too. The other things that I find helps is drinking a lot at each water point. Eg the car, at lunch if you find some. I always treat my water. Best of luck
Hi Kate, I am a keen camper and former hiker, until I did my knee. I'm also a friend of your brother Max, who is pretty proud of your efforts here. I also just put your TH-cam channel up on Rolling Solo Australia. An organisation for women who travel and camp solo around Australia. Iurged them to subscribe if they enjoy your stuff! Great gear advice. I apply all my old hikiing gear rules about weight to my own camping exploits thesedays. Keeps fuel costs down. I can still manage day walks but struggle with steep downhill. Enjoy!
Fiona thanks so much for your lovely comments. So great to hear about my Bro. Sorry about the knee. Thanks for sharing the channel, really appreciate it.Thanks again and happy hiking and be sure to say hi to my bro when you see him next. Cheers
I’m a big fan of wool clothing I’m using gear from woolpower Devold and Ulvang great quality but not cheap. I have the same pillow and really like it. It’s good to see a load out video from Ozz 👍
Thanks for going through your gear list. Always enjoy seeing other people’s setups! Good to see you have a well stocked first aid kit too. I’ve seen some hikers that seem to take the very bare minimum in first aid items which I think is not a smart area to try and save weight in. Which app do you use for your GPS maps?
Thanks heaps. Yes. I want to be sure if and when trouble strikes I’m not sitting in that ridge thinking about all the items I ditched because they weighed too much. I use Memory-Map but only because I payed a lot a few years back. I’m not happy with their upgrades these days. Feel like they have forgotten the Australian market. I lean towards avenza for areas I don’t have existing maps. What about you?
I've mainly been using Avenza which is good but currently looking into whether there are some other options that may be better. I'm actually doing a navigation refresher course online this weekend via Zoom which was offered for free by the Victorian Rogaining Association and the team at Bogong Equipment. Should be fun!
@@FreedomOnFoot oh so good yes always good to refresh the skills and how good are local clubs like that. I love avenza its so cool that you can just buy one map at a time and there are many free ones too.
One thought - dependent on terrain PLB should be worn near your chest. Learnt this trick as a ADV motorcycle rider - if you have a serious accident you're likely to be crunched up in the foetal position, or may have broken arm or collarbone - arms clenched near your chest balled up like a wailing baby screaming in agony you can still (maybe) manipulate your PLB to set it off. Sounds drastic but....
Totally agree. I had a mate point this out too. I now put it up the top of my pack - in the top zipper. Not quite on my chest for super easy access but yes I agree quick and easy access is best.
Hey Kate, love yr vids. I've recently starting using a purpose made pee cloth and bush bidet.( Had to order from USA - which ain't ideal).. But it's so good. Feels cleaner and no packing out the TP.. we doing larapinta next year, better find yr vid on that.. can't wait! Thanks again for yr vids.
Oh so cool and thanks for the lovely comment. I have thought about getting into these good to know they are useful. The Lara vid is pretty basic but some great advice I got from a mate is don't rush. Some days I would get to camp at 11am but then take time to set up camp and really explore the area. I can't wait to do it again someday. My favourite camping was up high on the windy peaks and Hugh Gorge Junction (not the shelter area but up near the gorge). Happy hiking
Excellent , but i was wondering. Wouldn't it be worth the weight of another copl of zip lock bags to store items like your tent pegs toiletries etc coz zat stuffs gonna be all over da shop ? Be well
Yep I had a really bad blister run a while back and found all of these things helped in different ways. The under tape is great as its so skinny so provides protection without bulking up the area. But I haven't had a blister in a long time so might be able to remove it.
Oh man great question. I’m not really sure to be honest. I think mine are nylon - I always wear with long socks or pants or they do get sweaty. I found this article that might help www.inspirationoutdoors.com.au/hiking-gaiters/
@@TaylorPaulPhotography No worries mate. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Best of luck with things. I have a website at www.australianhiking.com/ with my thoughts on gear if that helps at all
@@margarethogan4846 thanks so much. I believe Dyneema Composite Fabrics are 100% waterproof on their own, stitching creates small holes in any material. I also pack everything in a plastic liner to go for super water protection. Never had an issue and I’ve walked in some epic heavy rain 😀
the top is arcteryx - got it on super special as I find their gear to be a touch too expensive. The pants were some Macpac branded ones I bloody love them but can't find any more (also an online special). I ripped the bum out of them doing the castle hike

@@KateGrarock in reality, the whole notion of ethically sourced down is a furphy. It’s another way to suck in people who think of themselves as conscious consumers. If you actually look into so called ethical or RDS labelled down, you will quickly find that it’s pretty much impossible for companies to guarantee their supply chain and while they may be able to say the down for a particular product was not live plucked, they cannot say with any certainty what other ways that goose may have been mistreated during its life. For example, a significant proportion of geese used for so called ethical down may have been dead when their down was ‘harvested’ but during their lives were force fed to make Foie Gras. Knowledge is power and I think it’s crucial that people are aware of these issues as they are being duped by companies who bandy about these terms without any real, exacting standards of animal welfare.
