    It's honestly quite comforting to see someone else not going complete ultralight. I just got my gear together for a month-long hike, and the longest one I've done so far is 8 nights. It will be in northern Scandinavia, so I want some safety margins, but seeing basically everyone on youtube and reddit have a sub-5kg base weight and talking down on people who carry more, makes me worried, and makes me second-guess my purchases that honestly were quite expensive. My pack actually has been lighter at some point, I had one of those tents that use hiking poles to set up, but it felt so crammed, my sleeping bag touching the tent wall and so on (and I'm not a tall person). Maybe one day I'll lighten up my pack, but for now, my base weight without consumables is about 9kg. What did yours end up being?

    • @BushcraftEurope
      @BushcraftEurope 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Why do you care about them and listening to what they have to say? They bring almost no 1st aid kit for a 10 day hike..
      I carry 20kg no matter if it's overnighter or 5 days trip or 10 (and it would weight more)
      I don't even consider that as a lot and prefer to have stuff with me and not being obssesive about grams. I would be if I was selling cocaine but don't care if tent is 2kg or 1kg if 2kg served me for 12 years already

    I tested a tyvek groundsheet last year in the Pyrenees and it was great. Like others said, put it through the washing machine once and then the dryer with dryer balls (no heat required) to rough it up. It still made some noise when I un/folded but made no noise once laid down or wrapped up with my tent. You can add gromet ties with some sewing and seam sealer but I haven't done that. I did the Great Ocean Walk in mid-December 2014 with a hammock tent. The hike is colder than people expect; temps drop at night. I stashed a resupply at Johanna Beach in scent proof bags and a dry bag up in a tree so I wouldn't have to carry the full 6-7 days of food! Also, at the time the Otway Historic Site sold camping food and gas so people might want to check that out. I had all my food sorted by I did by a S2S sleeping bag liner at the shop to beef up my warmth at night.

      Thanks so much for tuning in! 😄I have previously used hiking poles that had sort of like a hard rubber handle and the longer the day goes on the harder they feel. Im sure the good quality hard foam type handles would be great too. But the cork ones just seam to mange the sweat on your hands really well and seam to have the right softness to them. • @settohike
      @settohike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! 🙂 I am slowly trying to get my base weight lighter (to compensate for my camera haha) so weight is definitely a big consideration. I guess a lot of my decisions come from using something, and if I like it or not i'll see if there is a way to make it better. Such as my new stove, I used to use the Trangia which I loved but knew there was a stove out there that would be lighter but still an alcohol stove! My old hiking poles used to have a hard rubber handle with the soft foam underneath which to me seamed like my hand would sweat a lot/rub by the end of the day. So I knew I wanted to try cork when I was due for some new ones and I havn't noticed my hands at all with the cork! I hope that makes sense! Thanks so much for subscribing! :)

      I knew I wanted to shoot 4k at 50fps so that cut out a fair few options to start with. But I am pretty loyal to Canon. I’ve worked with a few video production companies before so I’ve always been surrounded by Canon. But Canon was my first dslr so I already had a few cheap lenses. (And used to the slightly bigger body size) The R6 (and the lens I chose) is weather sealed as well, which I thought at least might help a tiny bit for hiking. :)

    For anyone wondering I added it all up, it's about 15kg without water. I assumed ~2kg for food.

    Did you look at any other variable ND filter options?

    • @settohike
      @settohike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few, but the reason this stuck out for me was because of the shorter range. He does a 2-5 stop then 6-9 stop. Also the lens cover that comes with it i feel gives a little more protection then your standard lens cover while bush bashing around :P

    • @settohike
      @settohike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha the full roll of dunny paper was technically for 8 days not just overnight but at least we agree on the chicken 😛People used to tell me I should play piano when I was younger because I had long fingers haha I think they are fairly proportionate now 😂

      I just picked up the Mini 2! It’s awesome, and super light/small! In terms of backpacking with it - the remote is somewhat heavy, and the extra batteries would add to the heft. I’m definitely going to bring it on the trail from time to time, but might leave something else at home in its place 👍🏻

    What are gaitors???

    • @settohike
      @settohike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You wear gaiters on the outside of your boot/leg they are used to protect your legs and feet from things like sand, dirt and mud getting in your shoes as well as snake bites. You can get different lengths, some go right up to your knees or others are just little ankle ones. Some are pretty heavy duty and made of canvas where others can be very light almost like silk. :)
