Bald Explorer: An Abandoned Canal - The Shrewsbury and Newport Canal

  • The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals were once connected to the Shropshire Union Canal allowing coal and limestone to be brought out of Telford during the Industrial Revolution. Cheese and other products from Shrewsbury were exported across the country and overseas thanks to these important waterways. Sadly, in the mid twenthith century the canal fell into disuse like so many of the British navigations. However, the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust are attempting to put the canals back into water. This is their story.

Thanks so much Michael. These longer format videos are very time consuming to make. I loved making them and there are about 8 like this on the channel. These days I make shorter less well made videos purely because the TH-cam algorithm prefers it and people will forget me if I spend three months each time I make a video. :)

When did the English succumb to the present day mindset of passively accepting all the rules and regulations that we increasingly have to endure ? ... Needing permission to launch a coracle on a stretch of water ! Don't even ask.. these people need to learn their place.

I carried out major repairs to the bridge at Woppenshall junction .We put a steel pins into each block that forms the arch ,then tied these off to girdle above the arch and then cast a concrete arch holding all the blocks in place across the bridge. This was done as the bridge had a large crack across it ,probably caused by the ground settling around the abutments once the water was cut off from beneath it .The works were done in the 1990 by Shropshire county council Highways Department .

Unfortunately these days most the monies made for the canals go on flashy events and high wages and pensions for upper management and the 6 directors. The canals are literally falling apart and have been for The last ten years. Most of the maintenance fell behind about 5 years before canal and river trust merged from Brittish waterways 5 years ago. 10 years ago the boaters were informed by BW that they had to not spend any money on the canals because the government were saying they wouldn't renew the 50 million pound a year grant which would end in 5 years. When the 5 years came and the grant was no longer BW changed its name to Canal and River Trust . BW was no more to look after the canals , however they did manage to build and open 20 brand new marinas that are called BWML British Waterway Marina Ltd ( funded by boater fees and grants that should have been spent on the canal system ) . CaRT began 5 years ago and still the canals are not being maintained and work is only carried out when it breaks. Most the engineers of BW were laid off to make way for sub contractors . Monies are wasted on flashy events, flashy company cars and overpaid CEO's.
Us boaters love the canals and our lifestyle but it is forever threatened by those we pay our fees to.
Locks along the system are in excellent condition where they advertise historical sites but the other 80% of the locks are a disgrace and difficult to operate and at least 30% are just dangerous.
They are good at making a show !
Thankfully they had nothing to do with this one or they would of edited the boaters comment of them filling in the canals to prevent re- opening !!
      A lovely video

Loved this one. I have so enjoyed this production. I do spend time watching the "Cruising The Cut" as well. He is all about cruising the canals in a long boat. I wish I could spend some more time in England. Maybe I will be able to make another trip.

@@alanjackson4646 Thank you for pointing to Foxes Afloat--we're in love with narrowboats here in the midwest of US. Country House Gent, Cruising the Cut, lots of good ones. I'd also point everyone to John Rogers, who has a similar attitude toward travel, which is The Meander, though on foot. He's interested in the influence of place on people & does terrific vlog walks primarily around London.

I found cruising the cut by accident.. I can't stop watching him. I live in Texas, USA. I wish I had a narrow boat here. I'd live on it and start a trend I wish was already here. I'd give everything up I own for a narrow boat..

@@latinoclint I was in San Antonio just over 50 years ago and was very impressed with its little canal system. So at least you do have a token intimate canal to enjoy I have not managed to get back but which I assume has expanded by now as it was very popular. Has It?

I like your common sense interpretations of the mess the world is in. This video is wonderful, I will be searching out some more of your adventuring videos. I am a keen walker and love the countryside. Thank you. ilona. Toodle pip.

31:06 there's still one similar in use near me in Canada (the Big Chute Marine Railway). Thanks to British engineering I can travel from Lake Huron/Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario (386 km) through the locks on the Trent Severn Waterway without ever having to leave my boat. Cheers, great channel .

Absolutely brilliant. We've lived close to the Hadley guillotine Locks for a few years now and knew that they had been part of the canal system towards GKN but had no clue that it was as vast of a network as we are learning now. Recently my husband and I decided to discuss potentially getting a Narrowboat in the future, but at the same time with his fascination of the Shire Horse and being used as work horses for the Canals, I've been investigating more about the history. Now that we reside closer to Trench Lock, we had no idea that on our doorstep was this amount of history having walked up the incline plane many times and never knowing that under our feet the entire time was once the canal. I can't thank you enough for making this documentary and now plan on photographing the hard to see parts that still hold water within GKN as I've been in the facility a number of times (allowed, of course) yet never knew it was there until watching this sparked my curiosity and explored more on Google Maps.
Fascinating. Very well done on making this!

Thanks so much for your comments. I am thrilled that it has opened up the history of the area. So much of our past is hidden in bushes or lost to the landscape and suddenly when you know what was once there there is a huge amount of respect for the hard working people that worked there. I am thrilled you enjoyed the video. Thank you.

I live in shrewsbury and volunteered with the shrewsbury and newport canal trust a few years ago - helping to clear weeds and litter on the path at the shrewsbury end. I don't know how they'll ever get to shrewsbury at all, let alone all the way to the flaxmill. Ditherington road, telford way and other roads cross over where the canal was, the station car park and morris lubricants are in the way and most of the rest has been filled in. Relocating a supermarket and some power poles is easy. Tunneling under at least 2 major roads, digging up Shrewsbury station car park and demolishing the morris lubricants factory would be impossible. It would never happen.
