Another matter is if the outside seal is gone the inside seal is would also be close to been shot. The inside one leaks into the oil and engine parts so not a good idea to do less than one third of the proper job !

The bearing should be be replaced at the same time as the impeller plain and simple.

This assumes thats its the outer seal thats gone bad. And if one seal has started leaking, the other (inner) might go soon.
Id spend the extra 5 minutes to remove the crankcase cover, and buy a new gasket, and replace both seals and the bearing.
This also lets you remove the shaft, to be inspected, and or cleaned and polished a bt with a scotch brite pad
You can get the seals and bearings at a bearing store, no need to buy an overpriced kit.

There is two seals, With your methot, you are only removing the outside one, the internal one leaks directly to the engine oil.. ive heard that they wear out evenly

Hi Mate, The reason for removing the whole housing is so you don't break the small gear that turns the pump. Also it is impossible to torque the water pump back to spec once removed and this means it will potentially come loose after riding a while.

Great common sense video mate. I've done 2 of the WR450's I've owned and it's as simple as you say (2004 & 2011) 👍🏻

How do you stop your shaft from turning when you want to undo it

Thanks mate, great info, I just noticed weep hole leak last ride and your video supplied an easy, cheap solution, well explained. Don't forget to put bike in gear and lock up the back wheel with something when undoing the impeller, also check the state of the rubber pump housing seal. Cheers David

Bearing wear that contributes to seal life. So the correct procedure is replace both seals and bearing. IE remove large clutch cover.

Yep , I tried putting her in gear , but this thing was really on there , the loctite , so I used the flywheel trick , and some heat to be safe, the shaft seems smooth to me , just touched it with some medium scotchbrite to clean/ deburr a bit. Im buttoning up
now - wish me luck. Thanks again for the video-cheers

Nice vid, doing the whole lot in a week or two when parts arrive. Do you grease up the bearings on the inner side aswell?

@888SnOwMaN8888 I just brought an older Yamaha WR450F which has this exact issue. The bike was sitting around for 2 years, and once you start it up the coolant leaks from the weep hole. Should I follow these steps or take it to a bike mechanic and have them pull apart the whole bike?

hello friend a question when damaging the seal of the water pump would pass oil to the coolant?

Hey man , thanks for response-Also mine has the Boysen hi flo pump impeller and hardened shaft (I think , bought bike second hand ) so I don't wanna change back to stock shaft if i dont need to , but is it clear wether or not the shaft is damaged by feel or sight? I also found the only way to remove the Boysen impeller was the remove inspection cover ( flywheel side of bike) and hold it ( flywheel / shaft nut to hold everything in place)with a socket as the previous owner used red locktite for impeller! Lucky me! Also impacts scare me when it come to soft alum parts. I'm hoping you're correct about that inner seal as I have a track day at the supermoto park this weekend and no time to dick about with that rt now!

If you can feel a groove or damage on the shaft where the seal runs then the shaft needs to be replaced or fixed, did you try putting it in gear and holding down the rear brake with your spare hand to remove the impeller? The inner oil seal will last alot longer than a water seal because it is not under pressure and oil is constantly lubricating it
