I moved to America 30 years ago from Nigeria .We made all these mistakes until we as a family for years until we realized that we did not have to keep up with the Jones ! We educated ourselves and completely changed the way we handled our finances . We started savings from every pay check and vowed to use only cash for all purchases !Today we have a 4 bedroom house, mortgage paid off in 20 years , two cars paid off , and NO CREDIT CARD DEBT!! We do use credit cards to purchase as that is the safest way to buy , but every thing we buy we save for months in advance . The best thing we did was to invest in a system called 401k , which is the US self retirement savings and we are at a combined $800,000 and we are heading to a million ! We did not build a house in Nigeria ,but we did buy land and built wall and boys quarter .If we decide to retire in Nigeria then we will go there and build the house ! Maybe I should start a TH-cam channel!

      Very apt!
My strategy is this, whatever credit amount you are taking, make sure you have it saved away for every of your credit account. For those trying to increase their credit score and don't get more than two credit accounts. Also, try buying some expensive "necessities" by cash fully paid, the retailer usually reports it to your bank and your bank further reports it to various credit agencies which helps your credit score. Borrowing and paying on time is not the only way to build your credit score. Thanks for the advice. All what you said are facts and reasons many members of our black communities whether immigrants or non-immigrants are struggling financially because we do not pay attention to our finances.
Finally, get a second hustle usually a small business.

Welldone Bro. Great content. Yours is not for entertainment or gossip, it is real life.
I have lived here for close to 2 decades now.
Had to learn the hard way amd now being able to advise new immigrants.
To add to your point, which you mentioned, in some ways is for our people to stop competing. Stop being greedy.
Someone comes in newly, you see a doctor who has been here for about 5 years with a jeep, you want to jump on the car finance and also get a jeep.
Another thing, like you mentioned, people should check people out, before following their advise.
    Check their track record .
You can't flow with someone whose mind set is low, even if they confess to be christians. Someone who believes that you can't rise to leadership because you are black, someone who believes that it is only care/low skilled work that Nigerians can do.
People should ask God to point them to Nigerians with skill, right mindset and Godly, who are making it and are willing to help. There are many of them.
    Keep the good work.!

There’s nothing wrong with credit, but usage is very important! I made my first $100,000 in the US leveraging good credit. You want to grow in business in the US, take advantage of the credit system. The only time credit becomes a problem is when people use it to buy unnecessary things and they get stuck in debt.

Thank you so much for the words of wisdom. I'm retired as a nurse, midwife and health visitor from UK with a psychology degree from University of East London in Stratford, London. Saving money is the best so one can invest in property where one lives. I've seen unfinished houses abroard(Zim) cos people can't finish the project as monies being squandered by relatives. I've seen people whose money they sent to build abroad gone down the drain. No house built cos relatives squandered the money. One guy unfortunately killed his brother who'd used the money to buy a bottle store for himself. No house built for the brother in UK. My relative and his wife built a beautiful house abroad but unfortunately they both passed away without having lived in their house. All their children live in UK. It's so sad. As you say, they could have bought another house in UK and rented it out and enjoyed the proceeds from the house. So sad eeh.
    Stay blessed.

Similar things happen in India too. People want house in UK and their home country but they rarely get to live in their home country house and their kids wouldn't want to live in the home country house. So they have to sell the house in the end. Such a waste of time and money buying land and building the house for no one to live in it :(

To be fair, I hardly comment on random TH-cam channels on my first visit. However, I just can't help but comment on this! I got into this country in 2022 October and I don't know how my orientation aligned with all that you have said even without having any 'guidance/counsel' hitherto. I looked like a weirdo amongst my contemporaries - obviously, our pursuits and backgrounds are different. Indeed, I can only owe it all to God. These are very salient and valuable truths that every new immigrant must come to terms with. Once again, thank you! thank you!! thank you!!! I can't help but share this link with my folks. God bless you richly. Keep up the good work.

The fact that we Nigeria’s moved to English speaking countries should be one of our biggest Luck. I base in Germany and my first 3years alone was learning the language and during some vocational trainings which limited me from work proper then comes my Joyful moment been a Mom was another story since there was no help from family due to me all by myself. For good 6years, God has been faithful and still His, now working fully and almost ready to buy my own house. Not easy though but your determinations go a long way. Set Priorities First 🙏

I wasn't born in Africa but some members of my extended family were.
Alot of the things he said are absolute truths especially about the credits, that's one mistake even non immigrants make. Credits can put u in a cycle of never ending debts. Always pay your credit card debts build your score and never owe money on that account. I personally will advice stay here atleast a year before getting a credit account.
Also the thing about investing back home I can't count how many of my parents friends and other immigrants from Africa that I know who have terrible stories of first trying to build a business or anything back home than in the UK where they live. That's a terrible plan.

Great informations! I have moved recently in Sweden but fortunately I have not yet made most of the mistakes you're talking about. Some people I came with have already done them though! I'm content with what I have and value my peace of mind to take needless credits. I don't think I need a car right now. Some friends wanted me to invest in some businesses back home but I showed them that I was not ready for such project. I don't expose my life on social media but still some people frequently ask me for money. When I explain to them that I do not have the amount they are asking for or do not have money at a specific moment, they think that I'm just being stingy or proud. I don't mind though, knowing that I have said the truth. I have gotten the chance of watching your video before starting to do these mistakes and I am really grateful for that. 😊🙏 Thanks!

Also happy your channel is finally getting the much deserved attention. Cheers to consistency.
Look forward to seeing more content around this

You are 100% right. When I came to the UK, everyone around me was buying iPhone 14 pro max on contract and other gadgets but I gave myself brain not to follow them , i am still using my Samsung Galaxy prime i came with from Nigeria then, they will make mockery of me because of not having iPhone 14 pro max, but I usually tell them that as long as my Samsung still receive call, I am fine. Today, all of them work 44 hours a week but always crying that they don't have money and will be looking for who to borrow money to them. People should learn to endure in any situation they found themselves. Thank you for sharing anyways!

Brother, you will go far in this country. You are smart. One thing you said is that life is in stages, I got caught out with the phone contract once, 15 years ago, never again. credit is good, but if you don't know how to manage it, it can spiral out of control really fast. Saving and investing while you can, because nothing stays the same. Keep spreading the word to our brothers and sisters.

I didn't buy a car for the first 5 years, I had to buy it because I got a job under Urgent Care and they mandated a car to work with emergencies. If you have financial wisdom, you won't run after your tail. I've enriched my family and soul in 5 years by using my head.

You video have really inspire me and changed my thinking faculty, I'm new in the UK, just spent 9 months in the UK now and was thinking of buying a car a car before the end of this year, because my work place is a bit far from my house which always takes me 1 hour on the bus
But hearing what you said now, i am binging to have a second thought about the car, I need to save some more before jumping in debts
Talking about buying things on credit, i also have fallen victim of that, i bought a tab for my daughter from a service provider, and so tired of it now, even before this video i have promised myself never to buy anything on credit again God help me, only buy what i can pay with cash
    Thanks, very good one 👍

Very deep and yet honest video in all ramifications. To be honest, it becomes content when many people can relate, and that is what you achieved here.
I laughed through it all because these were things I advised some of my single japarist, and they would be like, Mama, that is you, this is us. Allow us to breathe. A few years later, they are now choking. Mesef, don hold my advice make them no see u as bad belle. Nice video

I pray that almighty God will restore what you lost through the season .

I look at you and feel that you're a very young man.

Invest something that will give you cash when you finally leave the UK.
God bless you and protect you Son❤

Well done. Im am born here and all fall in borrowing. Phone bought out right second hand usually. If you spend 100s on outings each month, then stop spending. Pay things off, invest. Car buy outright, even if a £500 dump. You eill realise it had 4 wheels and engine as same as £1000s car. Stop all the subscriptions, it gives you nothing. And find a cheap interest or hobby. Dancing class, hill walking, home workout etc...something to keep you interested without outgoings. Bulk cook, waay cheaper. It s fresh and eat same food for the next 5 meals. And cut down on cans of pop or crisps or chocolate daily as it mounts to loads of money per month were you can invest it.

Wise words! Living within your means may mean having less...but it's a lot better for your sense of contentment in the long run. I'd say just be yourself, don't worry too much about trying to "fit in"...being authentic will lead people to help you (but don't let yourself be exploited). I hope the UK feels like home. Good luck with the channel.
