BMW S1000XR vs. Ducati Multistrada 1200S

  • Lots of riders want the looks, comfort and mile-eating ability of an adventure bike but have no need for any off-road ability, hence the rise of the so-called 'street enduro'. The recently-updated Ducati Multistrada is a familiar member of this group but BMW have recently come to the party with their S1000R-engined XR model. Can German efficiency tick more boxes than Italian passion?

BTW regarding styling, yes, the red Multi is the way to go. It's a striking bike. The BMW looks like someone found a collection of parts that looks sort of like a Multistrada.

Btw- Ducati claimed hp of 160, when dyno came up at 130hp, BMW 152 rwhp. A lot has happened in 2 years. No more vibration, now 165 hp, hard to even consider a multi now

yeah s1000xr puts down consistent 150-160hp to the wheel! serious power. Unless Yamaha makes an R1 based adventure bike, the bmw is the fastest.

Thanks for the video! I intend to buy an ADV bike this Spring, so simple reviews like this are helpful...I'm kinda leaning towards either the KTM 1290 Super Adventure or the revamped Triumph Tiger Explorer...I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on either/both. It might sound a bit funny, but when you mention that a bike is uncomfortable, can you mention for what reason? Such as a terrible seat (correctable), lack of leg room (also possibly correctible), etc. Thanks again...

One more comment - the outgoing MTS1200 S Touring can be bought used with low miles and fully kitted for 25-30% less than a comparably equipped XR or the DVT version. This was what I chose. $15,500 USD with 1500 miles, crash bars, fog lamps included. I added the touring seat and top box for another $800. No regrets.

Ducati, hands down. I rode both of these bikes before deciding on the Ducati. The BMW has no soul, no character, and reminded me of a Japanese motorcycle (which I own a few of). I really wanted to like the BMW, but just couldn’t. The Ducati...that sound, that V-Twin grunt. And the Ducati is fierce looking, my friends have dubbed it “the angry dragon”. Can’t get enough of riding it!

The first time I saw a Multi I told myself I'd definitely own one eventually. But when it came to the time part with my hard earned, I actually went for the XR ... and I don't regret it, not for a second. All in all it's the better bike. Not by millions of miles - but it is better (and cheaper).

+Steve T Thanks for the comments, Steve. Our show that is broadcast here in SA is 30 minutes broken up into three parts. We generally post one third at a time. Some of the content is too localised to SA to post here so we stick to the main tests and features. To watch the whole show outside of SA is not possible although we are working on getting re-runs out to a wider world. We're also working on an international version of the show - better made, more exotic locations, etc. Just need to get the budget and a broadcast channel. Watch this space.

I have a 2011 Duc and rented a XR in Italy for a week! i loved it the clutch less shifting is great once you get use to it especially down hill into a sharp hair pin!! With the wife on the back it handled great and sometimes i forgot she was back there!! Power was good even down low which was surprising! things i did not like was the kick stand is too short!! and the engine put off alot of heat when idling! My Multistrada is lighter and with the full Tergomoni system and re flash of the ecu i think its just as fast and more fun to ride with that big rush of midrange! So for now that i have a bike that is paid for i will wait until i am ready for a different bike and buy a XR that has a few miles on it ! 22 k for a bike is crazy!! ill let someone else take the 50% depreciation!

Bob, just getting to watch & read this review... I own a 2010 MTS also with race map & full Termi. Each time I ride I can't think how the S1000XR can possibly be a better bike. Low to mid-range through about 7K is ridiculous enough for me and I would never trade this off. Since she's paid for I'm hoping to wait 3 yrs and see if I can find a used MTS with the V4 (reading into rumors to much probably :o)!

Ducati... Touring model includes panniers. Ducati, better dash even on the prior version. Ducati has more suspension travel, wider range of adjustments via the ride modes. Handling is better on the XR. XR has more top end power. Pillion is better on the Ducati. Build quality... BMW has a bunch of odd plastic seams around the front fairing, the frame finish is better on the Ducati. Clutch is better on the Multi as are the levers. Gear shift assist is brilliant on the BMW but it's not necessary for this class and the Ducati gearbox is very good regardless.

having owned a 2011 multistrada, and now a 2016 model, i can honestly say they have ruined the engine. Plus your comment well the new Ducati is much better than the old one with performance, well that may sell new bikes but the truth is very different. My new ms, broke down at 700 miles, it continues to go into limp mode after 1600 miles with issues with the valve train. I now have returned the bike in limp mode 3 times, i have lost all looks on the motorcycle, and if it continues i am going to get a lawyer involved as i want out of it. $21000 usd fancy garden ornament. Yes its fast, yes it handles, yes it stops, but sadly i cant rely on it anymore.

As someone that has been trying to decide between the two , you have helped me to decide..............Nope, you havent lol..... aluisious has somewhat by atating you can dial out the Ducati squirming in mid bend... as the BMW is so planted in the twisties, mountain passes & fast bends.... Would love the Ducati to have a similar Bosch quick shifting auto blipper as the BMW though....
BMW TC is great but is so ON OFF wheras the Ducata has the 7 or 8 stage TC which is great for keeping shiny side up when being greedy with the throttle....... Build quality wise, I fellt the BMW had a load of cheap feeling plastics, handguards, trim round the massive rad & cooler for example.....
I am abit unsure of the DVT and how that will pan out when the bike is out of warranty.... in fact both bikes rider aids have yet to prove their durability especially in cold wet Scottish winters & both service costs are something to think about....... The vibrations are real ( 3000 k ) of riding proved that, but from what i have read can be dialed out .....
If i had the readies i would buy them both for sure but as i cant i will have to choose.... belt driven cams v hyvo driven and inline four V L twin will be the main decision to make.......
By March 2016 i will have decided & im sure i will have researched, experienced enough & bite the bullet ... My riding season means a lot as it does all of us.... wish me good fortune lads & thanks for healping me to continue t weigh up my options
    Have a grand New Year.
    Gogs.

Well my dad bought a 2015 multi S in may from glasgow, and we travelled all the way to Italy and we are using the bike even now with 0 to 5 degrees outside. I own a monster and I am freezing, while he is just cruising and when he gets off it he is never cold or sore, so I'd say pretty good winter bike ;)

+Gogs Alba In bikes as closely matched as this, I'm not sure there really is a right or wrong answer. The secret is to narrow down your choices based on reputable media reviews (that'd include us, btw) and get a test ride.
Bikes, unlike cars, have reviews that are much more susceptible to human shape and size, and so a great bike for me, might be a complete arse of a thing for you.

i bought the s1000xr ..... .The s1000xr is equiped with all new Continental optimized braking curve system (first bike to have it).It sucks. The Motorcycle Integrated Brake system receives data from sensors which indicate the speed of both wheels, the roll and pitch rates and lateral acceleration, so the specialized onboard computer can determine the exact position of the bike. With 100 readings and calculations per second, the system knows exactly what’s happening with the bike’s stability factor in each moment and makes the necessary revisions .The result is that the system knows how to modify the brake pressure applied by the driver at the deployment at the beginning of braking, .Thus the differnet brake feeling in diffrent speed lean an angles ......boy s1000xr brake system sucks.
PS:I am owner and quick shift also needed re-callibration every 2000 miles with rare use.
DONT go for the s1000(X)r except if you want electronics to drive for you

    This is my personal opinion...
BMW is superior in most of the fields where both the bikes can ride. BMW is more capable as the engine, the frame is more precision for stability and handling, seat position, quality range of the accessories. Last but not least, is the first project of BMW-MOTORRAD in this category! For my personal opinion is more confidence in riding sport mode but less for long distance cause of the vibrations around 120-130 km/h are too strong, exactly the cruising velocity for most of the people :'(. Ducati is loved for the twin-engine, for the "fashion" of the style, maybe, but the dashboard is less readable as it could be in a first look. Ugly vibrations of the castle of the windshield was running me crazy for most of the time, and come on, the quality, where is it for that amount of money?!?
Finally, I tried both. BMW for an entire day-trip in Tuscans roads, up and down the hills and mountains, some off road tracks too, fast freeways and I was enthusiastic of the agility and power of the engine. Never been so confident on a bike on my first try as it was with this one. I've got the opportunity to ride the Ducati for en entire day too, but after 5 mins that I was on it, I would like to return the bike immediately. I gave it a second chance riding for few hours, but honestly I'd really like to know the people who says that DUCATI is superior, really!!!
Of Course I've got a '14 ZZR1400se but I would not be bad the BMW as the second bike beside KAWA, or, better a KTM?!?! I'm bit confuse! :P

+The Bike Show Apologies, I agree i have poor social skills, still doesn't change the fact that your review is done poorly and it's far from the very important facts for both bikes. Happy New Year to you as well.
