Trains run on the left in the Lisbon metro due to their signaling system design

Prior to 1928 the rule of roads in Portugal were drive on the left, as current in UK. However, the railways in Portugal never switched over.

Nice reupload. I assume left hand operation is due to the direction of travel when the system was built. Thanks Tim😀

Unlike in Lima (Peru), there is a clear reason why the metro in Lisbon runs on the left. Until 1928, the rule of the ROAD in Portugal was drive on the LEFT. Main line trains still run on the LEFT, and the Lisbon metro has copied main line practice. It is similar in Sweden. The rule of the road changed in 1967, but trains continue to run on the left, and the Stockholm Tunnelban runs on the left. By contrast, in Austria the rule of the road was keep left, but was changed to keep right in 1938. The railways continued to 'keep left', but there has been a gradual process (not yet complete) to switch to right-hand running.
