@@RampantFury925 and during the Cold War, NATO accounted for them. Just in the interwar era, the Soviets didn't have any serious naval capacities and no means of procurring anything useful anytime soon. This whole video, while admitting that the plans were a bit optimistic glances over glaring issues. For example comparing the ship with contemporaries, Yamato was left right out, because it was obviously way more powerful, and in comparing to Iowa, they first try to point out that in the theatres these ships mostly would've served in, the Baltic and Arctic Seas, visibility limited practical engagement ranges, then they go and brag how Sovietsky Soyuz outranged the Iowa. Or how we know from the Italians with their 381 mm guns that have similar range that most of that range is never going to be useful because you won't hit anything really. They also don't mention what 830 m/s meant in terms of barrel wear and how for example H-39s German twin turrets may be fewer, but had a higher RoF. Nor did they touch on how Sovietsky Soyuz seemingly needed engine power rivalled only by the Iowa-class, to propel their ship to a staggering 28 knots. Lion and Yamato got comparable speeds on vastly less engine power, Iowa actually achieves cruiser-like speeds. Thankfully ingame the ships are pretty ok, if we ignore the Pobeda...

  • @pioneer_1148
    @pioneer_1148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

17:35 Ok so there are some pretty massive issues with the information that you present,
    1
The information presented is what is given in the design, which is usually quite optimistic - particularly for new naval powers who's designers don't have much experience, whereas the Iowa was actually built and while the Lion wasn't built it was going to be built by a power which had significant experience in naval design and therefore likely would have gotten closer to its design specs than seen here. For much the same reasons ships built by new naval powers tend to have at least some major flaws in their design
    2
High velocity guns were not necessarily an advantage at this time as high velocity weapons tended to be highly inaccurate, you also completely ignored shell design (which can have a massive effect on the penetration of shells) and their effectiveness, furthermore the fire control systems of the US and UK would likely have been significantly superior to what the soviets designed as the UK and US had more experience and technical expertise. (In particularly UK shells of the period were excellent with significantly greater explosive payloads than their counterparts meaning that shells did more damage per hit)
    3
While the thickness of armour on US and UK battleships would have been inferior the naval armour technology of the US and in particular UK and Germany was significantly superior to that of the USSR so the armour advantage would have been far less significant than the numbers suggest.
Additionally the distributed armour scheme of the ships (while not a crippling weakness) was a flaw and would have resulted in hits which on other battleships would have over-penetrated (doing relatively minimal damage) detonating in the ship.
    4
The range advantage is utterly meaningless US fire control at the end of world war 2 was massively superior to the USSR's and even then the US concluded that any engagement at distances over around 30,000 yards were utterly pointless because you wouldn't hit anything
Overall even with the best possible luck the Sovetsky Soyuz would not have been anywhere near as good as this line up suggests, and it would likely have been inferior to the designs of other nations due to design flaws and inefficiencies caused by lack of experience of their designers (you can have designers who are as skilled and work as hard as you like but if they don't have experience they are going to make mistakes)
Therefore it is highly misleading to present this information without any of this context as it makes a ship which would likely have been middling or poor sound fantastic

This failure of a ship type by the Soviet Navy had virtually no impact whatsoever on history or the design of future battleships since the Soviets were incapable of making a structurally sound ship that could contend with other ships already in service. I understand you are a Russian company and want to have pride in your history, but fabricating what you wish this battleship would have been through the tint of rose colored glasses is just silly. There are a ton of other ships that were actually built in real life and served in combat that deserve to have their stories told over some Soviet pipe dream of actually completing a single working battleship.

It created big impact on Soviet Union.
There was no such ships in USSR before, because you know, USSR didn't have colonies that she needed to protect. However, It caused big impact on industry. I understand that maybe you want all videos about US Navy, but man, there are other countries that also wanted to build something like that. Not to mention that USSR had bad industry as heritage from Tsarist Russian Empire. You must understand feelings of people different countries too and their history.
It was a big advance for a whole country. In order to build something like that, you must, for example, build big crane and etc., basically create new industrial sector from zero. In just 10-15 years. In country that has a lot more problems to fix. But still, they started to create them (its guns, for example are real and stationed in russian weapon test field). Yet again, its a legend machine, USSR superweapon like german Tirpitz or Bismarck. Of course, its never saw combat thanks to german Invasion.
But i can't say that her german "counterparts" have big naval history too thanks to carriers and submarines. For example, Tirpiz was at her port in Norway almost all time and did almost nothing.

The Sovetsky Soyuz deserves it's title as a naval legend for it was the most powerful battleship ever laid to be designed by the Russian navy at that time and the impact it made on the industrial capabilities for this time period. Just because it was not even built does not mean its concept wasn't used they clearly said the gun during the siege of Leningrad was utilized as an artillery battery that destroyed many German bunkers and ammunition supplies

Naval legend implies that the ship actually did something. The only thing notable done by anything related to this ship was that the guns were used as field artillery.

The in-game description for the ship is literally nothing more than a fantasy:
"The largest gunship ever built in the USSR"....(except it wasn't ever built)...
...."(Project 23) and one of the most powerful battleships in the world." (Still would've been outclassed by Iowa)...
...."She differed from the prototype, Battleship A" (which also never existed),
...."with her larger size and more sophisticated armament systems" (which were never built and would've lagged behind western systems as well).

  • @JKSSubstandard

Yeah, this episode REALLY telegraphs where the company is out of. Not only did they do an episode on a ship class that was never built and never saw combat, but theres also the exaggeration of the capabilities and extent of the program compared to other nations. Project 23 was cancelled by the war in 1941, but they compare it to a US project from several years prior. The actual US comparison to the Soyuz would have been the cancelled Montana class. 2 of the 5 ships were ordered but construction was delayed by Pearl Harbor in 1941 and repair efforts on the pacific fleet and then cancelled after the US realized just how little impact the BBs were going to have on the war. That class has 12 guns instead of the 9 on Soyuz, similar armor thickness, similar speed, larger displacement and far superior AA defenses. And any gun handling characteristic advantages on the soviet ship are quickly rushed aside by the fact that the USN BBs were carrying BATS**T, PANTS ON HEAD CRAZY NUCLEAR SHELLS after 1956. Pretty sure 15 kiloton nuclear warhead beats whatever AP the Soviets had

This ship is something the Soviet Union at the time did not have the industry and knowledge to build propperly. Another point not brought up was that the pathetic Soviet steel mills were utterly incapable of producing superior armor plating, known as "krupp" armor
This armor was found historically on the Bismarck, which had to be sunk by the crew, and Tirpitz, who survived a gigantic hole in the hull- the original "Krupp" company was German.
The Soviet ships have thick armor on paper, but because they used the much more limited, brittle, "cemented" armor, they would not have had the endurance of foreign counterparts, and would not have been able to withstand a strike from their *_own guns_*
