These battle scenes are _so_ much better than what the History Channel showed a decade ago.

History Channel doesn't give a shit about the accuracy of what it posts. WG does because they know that they will be showing it to a load of naval nerds like us. And this accuracy and quality shows.

I realize Wargaming is Russian, yet I am honored as an American that they took such care and attention to an even and truly honest way of informing us of our collective history. No matter who becomes president in November; I have and will always maintain that our two countries can achieve a lasting peace. We need to always remember that in WW2 we fought and died for the same cause.
I apologize for being political, I just REFUSE to believe that Russia and America are destined to always be rivals or enemies!

I served over 21 years, and I believe the same thing. We can be friends and allies. We have more in common with them and Europe than a LOT of other parts of the world. We have worked some with them in the past, on occasions. We will not be enemies forever unless the Governments keep it that way.

If "collusion" means Trump and Putin talking about ways for the US and Russia not to nuke the fuck out of each other, let them collude all they want. Hell, they could have gay sex in the Kremlin and I wouldn't care so long as it saves us from unintentional atomic fuckups that might otherwise kill us all. Each of them knows and understands that the other wants what's best for his country, and they respect each other for that.

Naval battles in the Pacific against the Japanese Imperial Fleet were bloody and deadly. Cruisers, destroyers, destroyer escorts were the class of ships that were right in the middle of the fight. They faced fire from every direction including from above.
Their crews fought bravely and valiently.
As a proud U.S. NAVY veteran I salute them. I hope I'd have been as brave as they were. ✌🏻🇺🇸

TheOtherBill Agreed. Or even something like a remake of the battle of Jutland or something. Would be epic. Or a complete history of Bismarck vs. Hood. etc. They'd be amazing at it. They could make serious cash too, methinks. Granted they'd have a lot of additional models to build but they already have quite a lot to start with.

I was fortunate enough to travel to the U.S. and tour this ship in Buffalo, NY. The ship was impressive for a light cruiser. The ship has been modernized quite a bit over the years, and thankfully the long service life meant there were plenty of crew that served on the ship who now work on the ship as guides. Well worth the trip to see this beauty. Planning on going again.

Note the two bridges - one a top the other - the lower is a flag bridge for an admirals staff. Little Rock served as 6th Fleet flag in the mid 70s home-ported in Gaeta Italy.

Just read a few months ago James Fahey's PACIFIC WAR DIARY, about his three years on the USS Montpelier, a Cleveland class cruiser. One of the best books I've ever read for giving you an idea of what it was like in the US Navy in WW II. They were crucial in use as bombardment ships. Fahey says that the USS Cleveland delivered more ordnance than any other ship in WW II while the USS Montpelier, the ship on which Fahey served, was third. He served in a 40mm quad Bofor for the first half of the war, and a dual Bofor in the second half. Fahey became acquainted with Samuel Eliot Morrison, the author of the 15 volume official history of the US Navy in WW II, when Morison sailed with them for a few months. Just a great book.
There is a great photo of the Houston easily found on the Internet being towed to Pearl Harbor. The only reason she survived was because the Pacific was completely calm. You can see the deck of the Houston only a few feet from being awash. Unbelievable that it survived.
Just a great class of ships. I think the three most crucial types of ships were the Clevelands, the Fletcher class of destroyers, and the Essex class of carriers.

The heaviest USN light cruisers were the Worcester class. They were at 18000ton deep load displacement and were essentially huge AA cruisers (12 dual purpose 6"/47cal guns). There were only two completed and they weren't regarded as particularly successful (guns were problematic), but they were the biggest by a large margin.

In Alpha/Beta they were strong as hell. Not unsinkable, but right pains in the stern. Almost impossible to citadel, and rained fire on you endlessly. They were also by far the best AA ship of tier 6, and a good deal better than many of tier 7 (and CVs were OP as fk in the early days, so that meant something).

Interesting comment about the difficulty of maintaining much of the orginal armament for GFS of shore targets (7.20-7.40) after 6 of the clevelands were modernised with Talos or Terrier. The last two survivors Oklahoma City and Little Rock retained just one triple 6 inch and a twin 5/38 but when reintroduced a lot of supplementary systems for the triple 6 had to reduced in a number of modifications and this somewhat limited the accuracy in hitting shore targets and supporting army and marine operations off Vietnam. Two of the converted cruisers Galveston and Topeka retained much more half of the orginal armament two triple 6 inch turrets and three twin 5 inch which overall must have added 400 plus tons overall with the below the deck parts of turret, ammunition weight etc. The stability problems of Galveston were substantial and it appears to have served only from 1958-1969 the Galveston not being quite complete when mothballed in 1946 and was technically a new ship when commissioned as a missile cruiser in 1958, in some ways the last real US cruiser. Nevertheless although lasting nowhere as long as Little Rock, Galveston was awesome both as a missile Talos ship and as a gun platform and was New Jersey main escort in its 68/9 tour off Vietnam and USS Galveston gave awesome supplementary fire support.

Sergey Zhebrovsky has Freidman's book on US Battleship design under his right arm, which indicates they had good sources. Friedman's book on US cruisers is not visible, but I assume they had it nearby. Now, who's for seeing a USS Worchester in World of Warships? LOL and you thought the Cleveland had a fast rate of fire? Lots of errors in this video, starting with the cruisers original purpose. They were fast scouts for the fleet in the days before aircraft. Their role changed during WWII. In the Atlantic and Mediterranean their key role was convoy escorts, anti-submarine duty and close fire support during the various amphibious operations. Also they had a significant anti-aircraft role in the Mediterranean. In the Pacific it changed as the fast battleships (Iowas) and fleet carriers could out pace almost anything afloat. Their role as strong antiaircraft platforms became increasingly important particularly as Japan reverted to using Kamikazes.

Yeah even compared to heavy cruisers, light cruiser had a lot better AA for third displacement than battleships plus their were only 4 battleships which were The Iowa class that even could efficiently escort Carriers.

    • @trevorpollo
      @trevorpollo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@apex_blue You're forgetting the South Dakota and North Carolina class battleships which did an excellent job providing AA cover to US carries. Enterprise was saved many times by the AA cover of North Carolina.

@@trevorpollo yes they did that’s why I said efficiently because they often did not not have the speed to keep up with the group at full speed.

th-cam.com/video/MSUsC75KU1Y/w-d-xo.htmlm45s "The battle of Bougainville went down in history as the first American offensive operation against Japan."
Ok... correct me if I'm wrong... but I'm pretty sure that the Bougainville campaign occurred after the invasion of Guadalcanal. An invasion would be considered an offensive, thus the Bougainville campaign is /NOT/ the first US offensive operation against Japan.
It also can't be claimed as the first island taken under the island hopping strategy as some smaller islands were already taken prior to the invasion of Bougainville.
This statement bothered me a lot... as you can see =P. Could have been lost in translation, though I have a feeling it wasn't.
Also... to those stating that all naval battles occurred in open ocean... far from land and thus complain that maps around/near islands are not a realistic area for combat... This video shows off the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. =P
