Excellent video Andy. It reminds me of an easy way a Chinese teacher told me how to remember Chinese 'word order' without needing to think of lots of rules. She said, just remember 6 words in this order: Who - When - Where - How - Do - What (for Chinese word order) with the option to put 'When' at the beginning. The main difference is the verb phrase in Chinese is at the end of the sentence. English word order is: Who - Do - What - How - Where - When (English also has the option of 'When' at the beginning). Using these words, beginner students don't have to remember linguistic terms like Subject, Predicate, Prepositional phrase, Verb phrase, Noun phrase, Object, etc.

Hi Andy! I am currently HSK 2 going on HSK 3. My biggest problem was, despite all of the words I have learned, I still struggled with understanding sentence structure. I have watched probably hundreds of videos and read many instruction books, but your video of sentence structure is the best I've seen. 谢谢你!

I am learning from a set of books called "Elementary Chinese Readers . " It is a great series which works through sentence structure and grammar .
Ok it's out of print now but I bet there are similar books , you may find that asking a bookshop or University running Chinese language courses may give you the information .
I went to a bookstore in London called Cypress Press , they have been very helpful .
PS this is not an advert and I do not work for this firm .

I just realized from watching this video that Chinese sentence structures are extremely streamlined and very logical when it comes to what should come first in the sentences. I’m in awe. This is no baby language, but an advanced language in terms of development. Rely solely on word orders, so there is no need for conjugations or complicated rules. Well, wish it could be written and read phonologically, but that could only happen in another parallel universe.

    • @Pogonotrophy
      @Pogonotrophy ปีที่แล้ว +4

If you research *phono-semantic compound characters* which are the majority of Chinese characters and then learn the radicals that make up those compounds you may eventually be able to even read Chinese this way as well. But that's probably not as important a skill as being able to communicate first.

Andy, the COLOR CODING really helps in showing exactly where words are placed in a Chinese sentence. THANKS again for your EXCELLENT videos.
P.S. The LITERAL TRANSLATION of the Chinese sentence into English also helps tremendously in understanding Chinese sentence structures. Xiexie!!

I don't really have a reason for learning chinese however I've been watching a lot of CDrama and I said why not learn the language and so I spent a lot of time building my vocabulary and today I thought why not start making my own sentences however I realize the previous videos I've watched I didn't quite understand it as I do now. First time commenting publicly and it is just to say thank you for content like this. It really drives my motivation in learning chinese on my own. You did such a good job in explaining. Hi Andy, thank you for the simplicity of your teaching. I am learning Chinese from you much quicker because of the way you explained it. I have a teacher also here where I am at, but I told her that it is better for me to hear the sounds of your Chinese language rather than learning the Chinese characters. This way the sounds will let me discover the Chinese characters later, just like a kid. Thank you Andy🎉

This is fascinating. When I was learning German, I learned sentence structure by listening to those who spoke English but did not understand English sentence structure well, and parsed how they put their words together. They then taught me German while I taught them English structures. It worked very organically. I see from this that the same technique could work with any language, and so the structures used by Chinese speakers in English-speaking countries can be highly informative as to this concern.

1 of clearest and most understandable, with using
re organized English words, phrases,,and clauses according to
    Chinese word order--extremely helpful.
More help can be taught about
    othervsorts of tie words locations.
So far, Andy shows time point or point in time nouns, but what about time length nouns in time
length adverb prepositional phrases, like for how long 1 minute, 2 hours, 500 years, etc.
Also, there are number of times
nouns, like They danced 15 times
    during the ball.
    Hope that these. 2 help.

FINALLY!!!! This is exactly what I'm looking for. I found you right in time.
I've tried taking mandarin lessons 25 years ago when I was in 🇵🇭 because I was dating a guy from 🇹🇼 and now he is my husband for 25 years and still I don't know mandarin.
I gave up because of difficulty saying the tones. I was so frustrated and my hubby gave up to.
Now I've decided to learn again for the last time to fulfill my promise to his mother that I will learn mandarin for her and I want to surprise my husband.
I want to take online classes privately if there's one.
I've been looking for lessons in youtube and I just found you today.
This is very easy to understand and very helpful for me.
Thank you very very much for all your time and effort making your videos and lessons.

Very nice video. I always tell people that Chinese has no grammar. Not to confuse them in the beginning. Actually I never really studied Chinese grammar. Through the many examples in real life you get the feeling what is correct. It is sort of learning like a child. It is a little bit like learning music. Do it first and later look at the structure for clarification. But when you know already Chinese, it is fun to look at the structure and see how simple it is most of the time. Thank you.
