What creates GIANT bucks?

  • Whether you are trying to grow a giant buck on your property or searching public land looking for the biggest deer you can find, this video is a must-watch.
In this video, Brian Murphy and Dr. Karl Miller separate fact from fiction when it comes to antler development in whitetail deer. Brian was the CEO of the Quality Deer Management Association (now the National Deer Association) for 23 years, and Dr. Karl Miller, professor emeritus at the University of Georgia, has been professionally studying whitetails for over 45 years. In this video we discuss:
The difference between antlers and horns
How to tell if an antler deformity is genetic or not
What makes a buck display non-typical points
What to look for in hunting properties if you are trying to find or grow huge bucks
Some of the biggest bucks tagged each year are...immature?!
Are you lowering the quality of the genetics in a deer herd by shooting trophy bucks?
    What constitutes a "management buck"
What most bucks are genetically programmed to look like
What makes a good "cull buck"
What is it that makes a buck's antlers so gnarled at the bases?
    and tons more!

I would love a video that discusses the accuracy or lack of; of aging on the hoof as well as teeth/jawbone aging, and the incisors testing method…as compared to known deer age.
I’ve read a few college studies claiming that on the hoof, jawbone and the incisor lab testing are all, at best, 36%accurate, compared with known deer age?
Would love these experts to discuss this to help with game management when it’s possibly only a 36% accurate guess.

At least 15 years ago a previously unknown, heavy horned, very misshapen-racked buck showed up on our farm. With 1 beautiful, heavy and tall side, and the other side an 18 inch spiked club, he was a formidable fighter. Within weeks every buck was missing at least part of their rack. In subsequent years, that pattern of odd rack was prevalent in young bucks. We have been culling out those deer ever since but still see them. Our assumption is that it's coming from his doe offspring. We do harvest does at a rate of about 5 doe to 1 buck. That's not a goal but just what it works out to. Of course, we can't tell which does may be passing this on. 120 acre cattle farm, 1-3 bucks harvested per year including culls. Thoughts?

Stress or physical pain/ injuries have a lot to do with rack development. Often overlooked

Maybe the reason when you shoot the bucks off with small antlers you don't get bigger antlers is because you also have to shoot the does that produce small antlers too? Where to they get antler genetics from mom dad or both?

    • @ThomasFarrell-p6h
      @ThomasFarrell-p6h หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Both. This is why culling is iffy at best.

It has NOTHING to do with the soil imo.
Have you ever been to DeKalb Co Ga ??
I’ve lived in Ga all my life and I can tell you areas like this are not exactly full of people deer hunting to say the least lol
NOBODY has been deer hunting in those areas in a million years , and so you have these guys now getting permission to go in and bow hunt these areas , and they are easily killing these hammers bc nobody has hunted them in forever.
    It’s not the soil.

At 7 min in when he says deer came across the berring strait , i am out. It’s proven now that there was no non frozen corridor to the US through Canada among other things that have blown that entire theory out of the water which mainstream academia teaches us. Ugh. @ I know the only one who does, And I think time, space and human limitations don’t apply to him. A million years or a single second is trivial to the almighty. The fact that creationists or evolutionists argue over trivial things like that is a little silly in my opinion, these gentlemen are scientists at the end of the day, and are not pushing any type of view they’re just giving you facts in a palatable way for the average person to understand. A lot of time and money has gone into this research. So far be it from me to question someone about the data. I’m doubtful anyone in this comment section has a background in biology, I definitely don’t, I run equipment and turn a pipe wrench for a living. Just my two cents.
