    Love seeing them body synology on specs. He's right synology is riding the greed train..it'll catch up with them eventually. There business choices are about margin not putting out the best all around NAS systems. The race is on with the other brands on who's going to get closest to DSM ease of use and third-party support first and then the whole NAS space changes. Seeing this rep being so customer focused makes me really want to support them.

      Greed is right. Old CPU, limiting RAM expansion, discouraging 3rd party drives, while driving on DSM? They must be high.

      @bobbymoss6160 high on profit, their margin on these have got to be insane. Most expensive brand, least expensive hardware used. They've recouped their R&D investment in DSM multiple times over at this point so i don't really see that as an argument on why their systems should cost as much as they do for the hardware used. Corporations are structured to award greed to their executives, if you've been making 30% margins for a couple decades it's almost impossible to drop down to 20% margins even if it's the right thing to do to stay competitive and bring value to your customer base. You see multiple companies make this mistake over the years they'll ride that greed train right into market share destruction town and then flail and cry. Notably intel vs amd processor is a good current example of this over the last few years. Amd came in with a high value product, intel could have squished the breath out of it from the start by being competitive on price but nope...greed train won the day they decided to keep their high prices ride on their name and huff their own farts. This allowed AMD to gain market share, put a ton of their proccessors in people's hand which in turn funded better development on Ryzen. Now Ryzen isn't going anywhere...Intel lost the battle and greed played a huge roll in that loss. Now they've resorted to shady and attack marketing to try to keep people away from AMD... just like synology will cry when it happens to them. Synology could stamp out these other brands right now by revamping their lineup to competitive hardware at competitive prices and these other brands wouldnt be able to hold out long enough to gain a good marketshare foothold but synology is choosing the path of intel.... one of there competitors WILL have their own Ryzen moment and then it's down hill for the Synology brand.

      The big thing which has turned me of synology is having to use their drives, which are double the price of others on the market & not as easily accessible

    Add ECC memory option to your NAS, and you will definitely be the nr. one choice for everybody that knows what they are buying.

    • @Yandarval
      @Yandarval หลายเดือนก่อน

      Real ECC would mean a Intel Xeon. Which are more costly and use more juice and heat . AMD. which unofficially supports ECC on all Ryzen CPUs. Few companies will sell ECC on an unofficial platform. The warranty situation on long lasting items like NASs would not be worth the risk. Official support would be an Epyc. So again more cost, jouice and heat. Its a balancing act. Business class units could justify an extra 100+ on the cost. Consumer/Prosumer, probably not.
      Real ECC support will make the mobo's a lot more expensive to manufacure. As it requires more board layers and traces. If you have ever held a server class mobo compared to a comsumer one. it like holding a slab of wood and a sheet of paper in comparison. Thats all the board layers on the server board.

    I purchased an Asustor AS5404T last month and loaded it up with 7 drives, 3x M.2 + 4x HDD. 1x M.2 for OS/Apps, 2x M.2 for SSD Cache, and 4x HDD for storage. I have it connected to a 2.5GbE Switch in SMB Multi-channel mode. I'm getting up to 550MB/sec transfer rate between the computer and NAS. Everything's working great so far.
    I did run into an issue last night where I was streaming some MKV videos from the NAS to my TV with VLC on Firestick, and I got rainbow artifacts all over the image. It doesn't happy to all the MKV videos, just some. I wonder what could be the cause?

    Be nice to see that ECC memory, one of the things that is holding me back getting one at the moment. One of the other things is being fairly new, are the in for the long haul will they be around in another 10 to support their products, I hope so but not 100% look at things like EVGA which has reduce it's product lines

    I take back every positive thing ive said about Asustor. I bought an AS6706T and its been a nightmare, and their support is incompetent. It crashes every time i try to sync my synology NAS data over with the intent that i would sell the synology eventually. Well, so much for that plan. I have three synology 's i was going to replace with three Asustor 's. I'm returning the one next week if there's no smoking gun found by monday and coming up with a different plan.

    HW/SW request: Local implementation of AI with web interface (maybe inside docker, maybe utilize OSS language model and interface) with access to local file systems for local processing/analytics/ML of local files. Example: user prompt, "summerize xyz.pdf".

    • @madness1931
      @madness1931 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AI uses a lot of processing power, and RAM. Basic stuff should be fine, but for anything relatively advanced, you'd need at least 32 GB of RAM, and modern Intel i5 (at a minimum). In other words their Celeron/Xeon line is a little inadequate. A graphics card would also be extremely helpful, with images. I could see this happening in about... 5-10 years time, when things are more efficient, but not anytime soon.

    I am feeling quite neutral about Asustor, i have a 6604T lockerstor 4 and whenever there is a firmware update i can expect a lockup of the system after installing it and rebooting, had contact with the support but they are clueless. I also have a 1004T v2 wich i bought in nov 2021 and last year they said adm 4.0 is the last os for it. Today i receive an email stating that in agust this year there will be no more support for that model. They blatently say "To receive the latest updates, it is recommended to replace your NAS with a newer one." Well that won't be an Asustor then... The lockups is not a problem on the 6604T only, also the 1004T v2 has them while my Netgear never had any issues.

    There OS is actually super reliable and hardware is strong ive never had to reboot a clients Asustor Nas other that for a firmware upgrade ive even got 10 year old buffalo nas's still going lol.
    Qnap and synology still have a tendancy to need to be rebooted after app updates changes etc way too often. But Austor STILL doesnt have Photo AI like qnaps Qumagie to sort by family members etc.
    5gbe has to be the minumum for anything but the cheap 1 bay nas's you can get 4tb nvme and ssds for as little as $200 us now.
    Asustor nas's are great value the only thing is they dont have a cheap 10gbe and nvme option where the new Qnap 262 has 2 nvme onboard and you can buy a 10gbe card to get around 850mps for like $550 Au in total which i got to replace a qnap 472xt. If only Austor made 5gbe the min spec not 2.5gbe as any SSD or Nvme or even a raid HDD will go 500mps or beyond.
    Hi Marco ive emailed you a few times esp with the old AS402T that had 10gbe.

    My 7110T has randomly removed data volumes on 3 separate occasions... unrecoverable, and their Tech Support is non-existent... Opened cases, and NEVER got Reponses, so finally gave up. I like the hardware, but ADM reliability is crap... My next unit will probably be DIY built on TrureNAS Scale or OMV.

    Honestly the pcie nvme expansion card is interesting product
    The borderline pcie x1 ro quad x1 been using by the rasberry Pi module mod , they provide 4 more slot and it still enought for some user espexially those QLC nvme build which have limited sustain write speed .
    And faster pcie switch/hubs used in flashstor and decicated card in asustor gen4 nas is also useful which provide 4 more nvme slot
    Will asustor consider release some kind of those expansion card and sell separately?

      @ymeshulin is it something u have experience with.. There's many that says 10 gbit when it's combined USB ports and Ethernet but then when comes to the eyhernet speed it's like maybe just 2.5 gbit... sorry I don't think u for real have been looking.. OK.... isn't helping... I have been looking through all that.. USB doesn't keep the speed up done.. I asked about M2 solution to pcie 10gbit adapter

    • @ymeshulin
      @ymeshulin 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Rene-kg7pf do you realize that your USB needs to be able to do 10Gbps first? This means it needs to be 3.2 Gen 1. If your port isn't that, don't blame me or anyone else for your "USB not being stable". Also, you don't really need 10Gbps for video editing, unless you work with 8k.
      Back to your question about the M.2 adapter. Your M.2 slot is inside the laptop. So answer a few questions for yourself:
      - Do you have an empty M.2 slot for such an adapter?
      - Are you OK to run your laptop with the bottom cover off?
      - As an alternative, are you OK with cutting a hole in your bottom cover?
      - Do you realize that your network speed will only be as fast as your slowest component? If any piece of the puzzle is less than 10Gbps, you will never see that speed. Your laptop, your NAS, your cables and your switch HAVE to be 10Gbps.
