This is actually something that I've never thought of trying and I applaud your cleverness. Remember though, that coils usually fail because of a lean cylinder. It's always important to ask yourself "Why did this component fail?" whatever it may be. Cheers Matt
Yes agreed. Normally a coil fails due to high resistance on the secondary actually- and a lean condition can certainly cause that since fuel is a conductor. Often worn plugs and wires can also be the cause- again those would result in high resistance. In fact a sure way to cause really fast coil failure is to cause ultimately high resistance- an open. If you ever tried leaving a connected coil in the open on the engine you will find it WILL find a ground- in some cases through the coil casing itself which will damage it quickly. I also saw another comment that recommended the camera can be used to diagnose wheel bearings. I didn’t even think of that and the car in this video even had a bad wheel bearing as one of its issues.
Thanks for the cool camera in action, we would like to see other problems besides a bad coil on future misfire videos to show other examples of how good this camera might be, a cooler running injector might be an example of a no-fuel misfire. When easy to do, SWAPTRONICS is always the preferred way for a DIY to diagnose. Too many folks are not very sure of their electronic skills.
I've been using one of those cheap GY-LCD90640 thermal cameras for the last few years. Despite its low resolution, it has been very useful! especially for cooking.
I wanted a thermal for so long, and then I got one, but so far, it's never been very useful. I always have other ways of finding out what the issue is. However, I have had a hell of a lot of fun playing with the thermal. It's a cool toy, and maybe it'll be useful one day.

yeah I have seen several videos using them and they were all really expensive and I doubted how useful it would really be. I was in the market for one but I was skeptical that any device under $500 would even work. so when I was approached by Pergear I was excited to try this out and it worked way better than I expected. I can’t believe I have gone this long without one!!
I watched Matthew Wandel show the Topdon TC004, and I was sooo impressed I bought one immediately. It's been great to use around my house, as I can see spots where insulation is missing, I can spot studs in the wall, a metal plate behind the wall where I was going to try to hang a huge mirror, and I plan on using it with my car as well. Maybe spot exhaust manifold leaks without having to get out my smoke machine. I'm suspecting my wife has a caliper that's sticking and so I want to take a drive and check a couple of calipers for relative heat emissivity. I took it over to someone else's house and spotted wiring behind the wall. It's a bit bigger (hand held gun type of shape), and not much different in price than what you have here. You can record pictures as well. I wish it had a real-live view on it as well.

My father was an owner-operator truck driver and as soon as I was old enough I started helping him work on his truck because if the truck didn’t run, we didn’t eat. That was the late 60’s so between 8-10 I was his gofer. I eventually started doing things like flat repairs on 22” split rims and eventually I learned things like troubleshooting lights and such. The only tool I had was a test light. It was during that time I got interested in motorcycles so I taught myself how to fix them because I couldn’t afford a new one. I’d find a bike that was headed to the scrap heap and fix it. Then came cars and I finally got a DVOM and I thought that was the shit right there. Then a clamp-on amp meter instead of having to put the meter in series. Are you kidding me?!!! I do embrace the development of better tools for us to use, but this is damn near Spock with his tricorder!

Hey Matt, why does the amperage show up oscillating like that on the scope? I would expect on a constant draw to see a somewhat steady line... but I'm just diy, with an interest in this field. Have a cheap scope and always get all kinds of noise but just curious why the signal looks that way. Is the light PWM?
great question. I noticed that too. I think maybe because there is a computer module involved on that circuit as well and maybe it’s a communication signal or something..
First, i had to laugh when the question of the trunk light being on or off when the trunk is closed (without being able to observe it) is featured on a channel called, “Schrodinger’s Box”. Second, while a thermal camera is an excellent tool, the indicated temperature is strongly influenced by the emissivity of the surface being measured, just like an infrared laser thermometer. As long as you’re comparing relative temperatures of similar objects (like you did with the coils or exhaust manifold), it doesn’t matter, but the colors displayed on the camera should not be confused with an indication of absolute temperature. An excellent tool for diagnosing problems with a vehicle, without question, and the images can easily be shared with a client as confirmation of the issue.
Hahaha good point on the irony of the light in the trunk lol. Yes you are correct. The surface type is a major variable in the temperature display. You can even see clear examples of that with the engine when it was warmed up. It’s not actual temperature for sure and I agree - the relative comparison between similar objects is more accurate of a way to use this tool
This is a GREAT point! I was bitten recently looking at thermal imaging of a wall in which some handymen had done a poor job, and was so intent on the infrared part that I didn't see the slightly different shade of brown paint that was put on the wall at one level on up (siding), but I could definitely see a difference in heat signature! Turns out the house next door was reflecting heat onto the wall, and wasn't a result of missing insulation as the homeowner suspected. It was also difficult to do any measuring outside because there was so much heat radiating from all kinds of places around the house. And while the homeowner asked about later in the day, I mentioned theres's still a lot of heat radiating from everything and noted gradual temperature swings when the sun goes down.
Sir can I upgrade the battery of my i20 2011 to a higher rating say from 45Ah 12V to 50 or 55 Ah? Will there be any problem in the alternator charging system and sensors, ECM, BCM etc?
Yeah, I hear ya. I bought a handheld flir for about 400 when I needed to detect a potential water leak in the house. I knew it would also serve for a variety of things especially auto. My wife doesn't question my purchasing on high tech gadgets and what not anymore because I've literally saved us thousands over the years doing my own auto repair.
I have a 4.6L Ford have lean codes P0171 and P0174, when engine is hot and at idle B1 & B2 STFT at 0% and both LTFT banks are at 10%, however when i increase the RPMs B1 LTFT increases to 17% but quickly drops down to 8% while the B2 LTFT increases to 24% and remain steady at 2500-3000 RPMs. Any input for my situation? Thanks!
Yep. You absolutely have a confirmed bank 2 lean under load. Pretty easy- check your basic single bank lean variables and it should be easy. Don’t waste time on whole engine induction and fuel sources.
@@SchrodingersBox thanks for the reply, since my LTFT increases on bank 2 under load it makes me believe it’s a problem with clogged fuel injectors? Fuel pump pressure is reading 39 psi which I believe is in spec for that engine. Since the LTFT doesn’t decrease under load I can rule out a vacuum leak

Yes often the amount of amperage can be a clue in itself. anytime I see .2A to 1A I immediately suspect a light bulb. if the draw is over an amp it’s probably some type of a motor or solenoid.
@@SchrodingersBox Yep, and thermal imaging is a great help in this sort of situation, since it could've been _any_ courtesy light that the vehicle could be equipped with that turns off when you can't see it. Glove compartment, center console, hood light, etc. While you could technically use process of elimination, this way is a lot faster. And I like how you plotted the current draw on the scope. An oscilloscope is a really helpful tool for diagnosing parasitic draws, particularly for using the single-shot trigger functionality to catch an intermittent draw that isn't on all the time, and for confirming whether or not it has some crazy waveform that suggests it isn't just a resistive load like a light bulb.

Great tool for many uses . This saves me from locking an associate in the trunk for a DAY OR TWO to watch the trunk light ! LOL !

When someone starts using one of these cameras for diagnostics, they also usually get to add a new word to their vocabulary. Emissivity.

Matt, Ivan from Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics reviewed a few such thermal cameras. I think he found the Topdon one to be the best overall.

@@SchrodingersBox i don't know much about the weapon, but i always thought they were mechanical-pressure activated. so the head shown on a camera, wouldn't that be the actual explosion?
I was thinking it reflects heat at a different rate than the surrounding area. Not really willing to experiment.
