Mr. Dupree's emotion throughout the performance made this, hands down, the best performance of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy ever! Beethoven would have been proud!

I have no idea why this piece isn't played more often. It is such a joy to play and listen to. I love it! I would love to meet Beethoven, but I feel like I already know him because he threw all of himself into his music, even when he could no longer physically hear it. Absolutely incredible!
Because it cost a lot of money ! In fact this masterpiece was written for a symphonic orchestra, a huge choir, a pianist and eight soli (women and men), most of the interpretations are without soloist or sometimes with soloists chosen between te chorus. The main theme is a sketch for the last movement

J'ai tendance à penser de plus en plus que ce sont les oeuvres qui nous choisissent plutôt que nous les choisissons. J'ai reçu pour un anniversaire d'enfance une cassette de cette fantaisie et vingt-ans plus tard je l'écoute encore dans toutes ses versions disponibles. Celle-ci est remarquablement proche de ce que je voulais entendre.

eines der unsterblichen Werke aus einem der berühmtesten Uraufführungskonzerte aller Zeiten vom 22.12.1808...
Ein so wichtiger Tag für die Musikgeschichte! Und welch übermenschliche Leistung Beethoven an diesem Tag (nicht nur als Komponist, sondern als Pianist und Dirigent) vollbracht hat.
Daß ich ein Amerikaner, ein Alaskaner aus Anchorage, solche Kunst vom Herzen über mein Computer erleben darf.... Na dafür gibt keine Worte, nur Dankbarkeit.
Dass ich, ein Deutscher, schon einmal in Alaska spielen durfte ... da freue ich mich auch sehr darüber! Schon fast 10 Jahre her.

I really, really enjoyed this performance. It is refreshing to see young people performing and enjoying a work by Beethoven. At times, I think this musical genre is dying so I found this encouraging. Also, a great performance by Mr. Dupree who obviously was enjoying the music. I especially like the part where he appeared sing "und kraft" at point in the piece where the chorus emphasizes this.
By the way I just watched Frank Dupree's performance of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto when he was 13--very impressive!

Excellent. I particularly enjoyed watching this young man feel the real emotion of the piece. His excitement toward the end was palpable, and his tears at the conclusion were real. No "Lang Lang" emoting here. Just terrific piano playing.

While many believe Beethoven's 9th Symphony to be the acme of the choral symphony genre, I much prefer the Choral Fantasy because of the lyrical abandon it evokes in me. It is the embodiment of ecstasy for me.
Really enjoyed this performance, a preferred interpretation to Alice Sarah Ott. Somehow flows more naturally.
Dupree is enjoying some wonderful successes, and tehy are thoroughly deserved.
I shall listen out for his version of Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto.

Dans la "variation céleste " qui commence a 8'56 , il y a comme un trou dans le temps d une magie unique je trouve : comme si la note qu on attend et sur laquelle on sait qu on va basculer etait en quelque sorte "deja la ".

If I made music I'd incl the piano in every work. It's that good of an instrument. But yes this pianist rates right up the with best.
The piano is a Steinway, which to my mind is too harsh, this should be played on period instruments.
Wenn Beethoven "Fridays for future" bereits gekannt hätte, hätte er diesen jungen Menschen dieses Werk gewidmet, so wie ich den alten Revolutionär einschätze.

I have to say, while I thought it was nice that this one lady in the audience let out a loud whoop around the 19 minute mark, I have to wonder, given the fact that in Germany, audiences are generally more reserved than in the USA, did people who were sitting by the lady give her an annoyed glare after she let out the whoop?

I have a hard time visualizing Beethoven doing all that physical drama
Tempo seems a little fast when the piano introduces the theme and orchestra picks it up - maybe better to linger for split seconds on that heartfelt simplicity. Prefer timing of Ott and Equilbey there. Elsewhere I love Dupree's expression. That's right, everybody's a critic.

Technically brilliant, but interpretatively wayward...it's no match for De Larrocha's wonderful recording...
Indeed the interpretation of Alicia is hugely orthodox, I studied this Fantasia according her recording, but I really enjoyed the Dupre performance as really fresh and not too much rebel, just the amount needed without deforming the whole piece ! It was a rare emotion carried in there ! :)
Why am I seeing the back of the Audience's heads? Get the camera on the soloist and the orchestra and Choir. This is played too fast.
