- Camels are an integral part of the United Arab Emirates' heritage. Not many know that they are also an important source of food and milk in the region.
Through the Eat at Expo program at Expo2020 Dubai, one can experience unique food concepts from around the world at the biggest event in the region. AJ decides to try out the Majlis Café, which is the first and finest camel milk café in the country. This café serves delicious camel milk products including chocolates, ice cream, coffees, milkshakes, and desserts. Everything here is made from camel milk, which you can enjoy even if you have lactose intolerance.
Khalid Nahfawi, the Operations Manager, introduces AJ to Camelicious and tells him about the farm that houses almost 10,000 camels, right here in Dubai. AJ is excited to see the large-scale operation, and at Camelicious, he is taken on a tour with the Plant Manager, Koushik Chaudhury. Camelicious has an international presence, with its products finding popularity in China, South East Asia, Europe, and America. He also sees how the team cares for the animals with specially crafted welfare programs. Here he also learns about the Dubai Camel Hospital, the first of its kind in the region, which opened its doors to the public in 2017 by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.
It continues to be an advanced medical facility dedicated to treating camels and attracts not only local owners but also camel breeders from across the world. Our team was lucky to film a surgery at the hospital, where the camel was brought into the operation theatre by a crane.
Camels are an important part of Emirati culture. Said to be God’s gifts to the Bedouin, these animals often made life in the desert possible. It’s heartening seeing the rulers’ dedication to protecting them and caring for them.
