    Thanks for the great video, and all the information. I have an EZ-AG coming in the mail and I'm quivering with anticipation.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    yes, in its normal mode it has a straight jack output so you can use guitar effects etc. with it.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, you can't turn them off. When you press a fret it sends a MIDI note-on message of velocity 15. If you're using an external synth you could use a MIDI event processor to make it ignore MIDI notes of velocity

    @rodolforibas Haha thanks - why did I not think of putting that link sooner? This video is at almost 13,000 views and I'm sure a good 90% (at least!) skipped all the talking anyway and just wanted the actual demo part. But still, if just one person learned something then it was worth doing. I hope you enjoyed it none the less.

    I'm avidly following the You Rock Guitar, and will DEFINITELY be getting one when they come out. They look to be an incredibly expressive and versatile MIDI controller amongst it's other purposes.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Indeed you would. It's doable with a much simpler setup than mine, you can just plug it straight in with 1 MIDI cable and be playing in a few minutes.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    there's a big thread on KVR about the guitars but not a whole forum. someone should start one up!

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, a normal unmodified Yamaha EZ-guitar plays remarkably similarly to a real guitar, but if you want other songs to use in the tuition modes you have to buy them from Yamaha. I don't know of any conversion software but I've never been interested in the EZ guitars as a tuition instrument so I've not looked particularly hard for any such software.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmmmm I think there are different modes on the EZ-EG which you can see in the MIDI implementation where it can send MIDI data either on channels 1-6 or just on channel 1

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheRagingidiot Yes you can. Works great for people like me who are more proficient at guitar than keyboard.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    No - the guitar doesn't have USB, and even if it did, USB MIDI devices don't get along with eachother that way. For basic control with one of these you could plug a single MIDI cable from the guitar to the Radias. You could filter the MIDI data like I'm doing with a computer first, but failing that just the single MIDI cable will work fine - especially if you turn off the velocity sensitivity on the Korg!

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @richieb132007 Seems like you can't get them anywhere anymore - they may be discontinued. I picked mine up on ebay. If you can't get the EZ-EG, consider the EZ-AG instead, the only differences are that only the first 6 frets of the AG light up as opposed to all of the frets of the EG, and on the AG you can't palm mute individual strings, only all the strings at once.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @blackhun1001 Yes, you could do very similar stuff with just a software synthesizer. You could take the MIDI from the EZ-EG into the TenCrazy program, then use a MIDI loback utility into any synth you like. Check out the freeware section on HitSquad, there are some great synths there! The EZ-EG is discontinued now, so I recommend setting it as a saved search on bay and keeping an eye out!

    It's a long shot, but @AdamJohnWilliams are you still running this channel?

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @xDanniBabix Yes, if you just plug a MIDI cable from the EZ-EG into a MIDI interface (The original retail packaging of the EZ-EG actually contained a 1x1 USB MIDI interface) then it will work fine as a MIDI controller.
    In this demo video, I'm processing the SysEx data so that I can play more than one note per string, and so that I can play it 'touchstyle' since that is my main style of playing these days.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bwd59 It really depends on what you're driving with the data. The guitar itself won't let you send anything other than pitch-bend data with the bar, but a lot of synths let you reassign it. My Novation X-station lets you do this, and a lot of software synthesizers will as well. If you wanted to use the MIDI data to drive a synth that wasn't directly able to do this you could use a hardware MIDI event processor or software like Plogue Bidule or Max MSP to reassign the data to a MIDI CC.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use the strings for the built in synth and they also send MIDI data, but I took the strings off mine since I only play it touchstyle.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @beewoy The EZ-EG was never released in the UK, and has now been discontinued worldwide. I had to import mine.

  • @redmistpete
    @redmistpete 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah! You know the strings provided different velocities for triggering the channels depending how hard you strum/pick?

  • @guitashamilele
    @guitashamilele 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks so much for this demo - I just bought one secondhand. Sounds great although not quite as nice as yours yet!

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @redmistpete Not on mine - I took the strings off xD but yes you're correct, the string sensors use piezos to output velocity information.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately I don't think you can. The person I bought mine from had taken the string sensor module out and flipped it to reverse the order of the strings, but the order of the strings on the fretboard can't be changed as far as I know.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mrrusss Yes that should be fine, assuming all you need is the MIDI note data from the guitar.

  • @gatch0

    are you ina band at the moment or have solo recordings?

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't have a microkorg unfortunately - although I am looking at getting one. It will work fine with it as long as you can adjust or turn off the velocity sensitivity.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @davidatyootoob I'd probably go for the Mustang if you're looking to tap and play chords with one hand. The multi-touch string strips of the YouRock guitar would probably be slightly trickier for that sort of stuff. I highly recommend an EZ-EG if you can get your hands on one though.

    very good video, thanks for posting!!! :-)
    One question, you might know the answer, will EZ-EG work if I plug it right in the MIDI input of my mono analog synth, or will only one string/channel work? Thanks again!

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @aamo215 It looks pretty good. I'm going to try one out soon, although it does lack the LED feedback of the EZ-*G guitars from Yamaha.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It certainly could, you can use a MIDI keyboard to input live information into guitar pro or sibelius, and this just acts like a standard MIDI controller.

  • @myhapylife

    Have you heard about "You rock guitar"? It's also a digital guitar intended for learning, but can be used as a midi controller. If you did, can you tell me something more about that instrument? I'm a guitar player, really interested in getting myself some kind of guitar-like controller, so I'm trying to collect as much info as I can. Thanks in advance.

    It does have a basic sound engine built in, but it's pretty poor. The acoustic guitar sound wasn't that bad, and other than that it's a terrible distorted electric guitar sound and a few GM-style Piano and synth ones.
    For the kind of stuff I'm doing in my videos you'd definitely need either a hardware or software synthesizer to generate your sounds.

    Hi, wicked video.
    Would I be able to use one of these to control a program like Reason or Logic Pro? Via something like an M-box using the midi ports?
    Cheers :)

  • @AdamJohnWilliams

    When I bought mine, someone had already swapped the strings over to be left handed, but unfortunately the fretboard can't be inverted for lefty play, no.

  • @AdamJohnWilliams
    @AdamJohnWilliams  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    What kind of stuff is it you want to do? What platform are you working on? How much experience do you have?
    Fortunately, a lot of software has free trials and demos available. I'm studying a bachelors degree in music tech so I have a lot of software at my disposal, but if you want to do as much as possible without spending money on software that might be unnecessary for what you want to do, then try as much as possible before purchasing.

    hi! can the synth be replaced by something cheaper, like a program? i can't afford a good quality synth, so i hoped there is a software i can download, and use it on my computer. can i buy the ez-eg anywhere in europe?
    nice video by the way, very helpful:D
    thanks:D

    Question, I have no interest in PLAYING a midi guitar, but would like one for input with software for music drills, like a note trainer for reading. Devices like this and the EZ-AG send out MIDI signals to a computer and could do this, correct? For some reason, instead of sitting down and just trying to read music on the guitar, if I do computer reading drills I practice more. I'm very unsure about cheap midi converters for regular guitars & I see EZ-AGs for pretty cheap. Would this work?

    As a MIDI controller you can only play notes by tapping/hammer-on? Are the strings only used for the built in synth?

    What do you think about the Rock Band 3 pro controller, it has midi output and has a mode where you can play it like that, and its like half the price, do you think it's any good for use as a "real" instrument?

    What is the best software (software synth & editing software) to use on your computer. Is there some nice freeware around. I ordered my EZ-EG yesterday but I have to be shure if I go on playing it before buying expensive software packages.

  • @kylehoffmanmusic
    @kylehoffmanmusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you removed the strings, did you remove them in such a way that they can be put back on or did you basically just have to grab some wire cutters and cut them off? (sorry if this was explained already and I overlooked it)
    I have the EZ-AG and I'd like to basically just use it the same way you're using yours in this video but the triggering from the strings is terrible.
