  • Let's make an Old Fashioned and learn some history. Cato Alexander was the first African American Bar Owner. He was born a slave in 1780, but opened his tavern in Manhattan as a free man in 1810. He became world renowned and was known as one of the top purveyors of Mint Juleps, Cobblers, Eggnogs, and cocktails (what we call an old fashioned).
    Recipe:
    1 bar spoon of sugar
    3 dashes of Angostura bitters
    1 bar spoon water
2 ounces (60 ml) rye whiskey
Combine the sugar, bitters, and water, and stir. Add the rye, ice, and stir again for 20 seconds. Strain into an old fashioned glass with an ice rock in it. Garnish with a lemon twist. Cheers!
Mint Juleps, Cobblers, Eggnogs, and cocktails or what we call an old fashioned. Cheers!

Are you sure he invented it?

I never said he invented the old fashioned, or the cocktail. Nobody knows who invented it. He and other African American bartenders made it famous. Cheers!
