Amazing how powerful religion is, most of these teenagers probably aren't that religious if at all but the hate runs so deep for so many hundreds of years
It would be better described as an ethno-religious conflict. It's not just that nationalists are Catholics and unionists are Protestants, nationalists feel themselves to be Irish, not British, and unionists vice versa. Not that many people on either side could actually tell you the doctrinal differences between Catholicism and Protestantism. It's a clash between two identities, which both have several layers and different overlapping historical influences on them. I don't imagine it's a conflict that will ever be resolved. At best, we can hand over the policing aspect to the Irish if there's a border poll and they vote for unification with Ireland.
It's amazing how many people here think it's about religion. Heck, I'm American and even I know that's not what it's about. Amazing how powerful religion is, most of these teenagers probably aren't that religious if at all but the hate runs so deep for so many hundreds of years
It's not as simple as that. There are many factors that contribute to the tensions in Northern Ireland.
No there isn’t I live here it’s all religion based
It would be better described as an ethno-religious conflict.
@@jamie6918 You really think the youths are rioting because of religious differences? Half of them are probably atheists.
I also live here.
It's amazing how many people here think it's about religion. Heck, I'm American and even I know that's not what it's about.
You have a group that happens to identify as Catholic, and another group that Happens to identify as protestant. That's neither here nor there. That division is semi-cultural.
The problem is that one group likes to be ruled by England, the other group wants to keep their identity and be separate, along with all the nuances involved in those differences. THAT is what it's about!
People in places like here, Reddit, Twitter, etc... hear "catholic/protestant" and yell "SEE??? IT'S RELIGIONS FAULT!!! REEEEEEE!!!" as they lose their shit.
