@@madrail9103 I’m still totally new and getting into inlays now. I’ve heard a good way is to start with a standard v-cut graver and then move to flat graver to widen the “v” and then do your undercuts.

I tried to get into engraving. Doing the engraving and getting good at it is one thing. Making the design is my biggest hurtle. I can’t draw (not well enough) or have the imagination to apply it to paper. It takes a real artist to create a design.
Alec Steele did a bunch of videos a while back on engraving. I think he even took an entire course on it. Very tough nut to crack. Pretty much an entire skill set on its own. The biggest thing is it’s really hard to fix errors. I have no doubt you’ll become proficient…practice, practice, practice. Take a course if you can find one. I think Alec went to one in TX. Good luck with it! Looking forward to seeing it in future videos.
Yeah, I’ve looked for some courses in my area but nothing available right now. I’ve started to go through Steve Lindsay’s online courses, they’re pretty good. Thanks for taking a look, Jason.
Love watching you take the next step, in your amazing journey, my brother! That's exactly why I support your channel! Keep evolving, and thank you so much, for sharing your talents! 😎👍🏻🔨🔥🗡️
Very interesting! And that are some great tools, you'll probably have a lot of fun getting into engraving with them. can't wait to see what you'll make in the future
Cooool! I just got an idea to try to make one out of an old spring loaded center- punch and a small compressor. And what do you know. There are several videos on TH-cam do do exactly that!
Engraving really is a whole other craft unto itself. I mean heck the really best ones its more or less all they do for a living, mostly because it takes ages to learn and even more to do the designs themselves. Might be worth picking up a course on it with someone who can help you along and get you started.
Yup, I've already looked at some courses. Nothing available in my area at the moment so I'm going through some online learning provided by Steve Lindsay's site. Some great learning plans on there. 👍🏻
I've thought about opening this pandora box and I love the thought of doing some engraving for inlay work, but I have yet to find time to even be in the shop enough. Thanks for posting....I may yet open this box in the future.
It’s a pretty long learning curve I’m noticing. I can do simple things but I think I need to spend hours just on the basics before I can move onto to anything else. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I actually have been practicing for about 5 years and just started selling my pieces. I don't do anything crazy but I use a Lindsay palm control. Yikes! That sounds like you need to turn your idle adjustment down there buddy.🤣 Try doing some border leaves on some practice plates it's a great way to get started. Keep us posted on your journey to learning engraving.👍
Yeah, I did have the idle a little high on that recording. I'm still fine tuning it. I'm so busy with my Journeyman knives right now I haven't gotten back to practicing. Hopefully in Q3. Thanks for watching
I recently got a ball vise from Amazon. It was 130$. I haven't weighed it. Has to be over 20 lbs though. Heavy. It doesn't tilt as easilt as your GRS. I actually have to lift the ball to tilt it. Not completely off the stand.

It looks so easy on camera.. I've been there.. Good tools are very important, so It was definitely good investment! How did you assemble engraver to air compressor? This little pipe/hose is not typical diameter, right?
I already had the quick-disconnect fitting for my compressor that fit the diameter of the hose. Those are easy to find at any hardware store (at least here in the US). I did the engraving on the copper fittings last night. It went well. Pretty simple design, but it got my feet wet. 😜
In my very limited experience with manual engraving, it is extremely difficult and time consuming. I lack the patience! I'm gonna let Kyle Royer and Sam Towns have all that fun, and they're both extremely good at it.

Great info as I have been wondering about how engraving works lately but haven't dug into it yet. Do people use patterns like leather work or do you have to do it free hand?

I bet that sword is going to be out of this world! Also what about if you were to get them laser cut stick ons that would have your logo and initials then engrave over it so everyone will come out the same!
Hahaha... not a chance. There's a bit of a difference between a $200 forge and $2k worth of top of the line engraving equipment. How about a t-shirt instead? 🤣🤣
