Wow, I went to high school and early college with Terry. I first saw him playing with his band at a school dance, we must have been just 16, and he totally blew me away even back then. A couple years later I got to know him a bit (we both went to College of Marin, we both lived in Sleepy Hollow). He was always such a generous and inspired cat. Seeing him excel by leaps and bounds during that time was a thing to behold. I feel fortunate to have been around his greatness just at the time he was discovering it.

Wonderful conversation between friends. These guys in their 60s and 70s are still pushing the envelope and to hear them explain it, it is simply by being completely open to who they are. We can all aspire to this in whatever our field.

I'm not even a musician and I haven't listened to that much of their music since the 1980's, but I love hearing them talk about this stuff. It's so interesting. Like I said, I don't play an instrument, but I understand what they're saying. I particularly liked Vai's observation about "getting out the way" even as a listener, setting aside your ego, prejudices and preconceptions and fully appreciating the "god" inside someone else. It's a great way of saying "keeping an open mind", but it's a more accurate description. His observation about "success" and personal fulfilment is also spot on. As long as you are following your heart and doing the things which make you truly happy, then it doesn't matter what type of car you drive.

I think that was some of Frank's best solo work on any track he laid down, and it was also a HUGE showcase of Parick O'Hearn on bass, as Frank had him record his work on an electric and double bass practically right after he hired him for the band. Another good drum performance I like is Terry's work on the "Black Napkins" track on "Chicago Live 1978" album. It was a clinic on how different time signatures could blend into a composition.

I'm most of the way through this first part. This conversation is resonating with me on a level that I just didn't expect. I'm reminded of a conversation I had a while back when I told a friend about these crazy, cool music ideas that I sometimes work out and enjoy. And then I go to bed and let them return to the ether from which they came. He thought I was nuts for not recording them. Maybe I am, but sometimes I get so much pleasure from creating something I think is cool. And then just letting it go.
