    You reminded me of my daughter when she worked with me in weekends, and we started it with breakfast out.
    Then she helped, and when she was ready to go shop.for lunch....she was so proud, and also amazing. Now she is grown, and that first cheap job she did, helped her through life in a way.
    I miss those breakfasts sooo much

    I've learned a lot from watching all these Kate's Ag videos. I had no idea, and most people don't either, what it takes to run a farm, grow the major food crops used by nearly everyone, and bring that to a successful harvest. More young adults need to take up farming and learn this important work.

    This is a good example of what farmers and truck drivers go through. Lose a tire and you've lost any profit from that field or that day on the road.

    Others have probably said that you can patch it yourself if you can get the tire off and on again otherwise someone else can fix it. You should watch how it's done if you have the time.

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your great suggestion. We need a big crane because this tire is huge and very heavy.

    • @hikerJohn
      @hikerJohn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KatesAg The tire itself is only 125-130 pounds. I think I remember that you have a forklift. You can also just pull out the spike and plug it from the outside. That will last for a few days (and sometimes for ever) and then fix it later in the barn by adding a patch on the inside. You should have a tire repair kit in the barn already. You dont actually have to take the tire all the way off wheel. You can watch a video of someone putting a TUBE inside a tire here
      th-cam.com/video/vSDnF6tjciY/w-d-xo.html
      But I'm sure you would rather just hire someone but it's a good experience to try it for when money gets tight during a drought that causes a decrease in cash flow. Also. I guess because I'm old (older than your dad) I'm "old school" and try to know how to do everything and be self-sufficient. I assume you dont have any big strong brothers (?) because I've never seen any young adult men on your videos. No "Hoss Cartwright" men???

    Tire trouble means story time because I've had more than my fair share of troubles with tires and I like telling stories 😁. This past spring I was disking our field that we have corn growing in right now and I heard the very distinguishable sound of metal hitting metal. So I got off the tractor and went around the disk to see what was wrong and I couldn't spot anything so I got back on and got to going again. When I got to the house my dad came over to help me unhook the tractor and disk and told me that "I must be living right or something." He pulled a hay rake tooth that had got caught on one of the blades on the disk that was right in line to have been ran over by the tractor tires on the left side, yet neither of those tires ever lost any air. I am 21 years old and have been around the farm since I was little and I've never seen anything like that (that I know of anyway). God was truly watching out for us there.

    Hello. You record a great video about your hard work . I am a farmer from Russia, Kursk region. I have a question for you : why is there such a small crop rotation , you grow few crops ? Why don't you grow sunflower, oilseed flax, and surepitsa? They tolerate drought , and these crops can also be harvested in cold weather

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your great story and excellent question. In our location on the great high plains of Montana at 3500 feet elevation and 10-12 inches of precipitation annually we can only grow a few crops with success. Wheat, barley, durum, and some pulse crops like chickpeas and lentils. We test different crops but they have failed badly. We try all kinds of things and I will let Dad know about your great suggestion too! Thank you for that.

    • @alexamartyanov
      @alexamartyanov 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KatesAg You cannot grow chickpeas, soybeans, beans. Too little moisture . You can try to grow rye, surepitsa, mustard, sunflower, oilseed flax. They are grown in northern Kazakhstan , where 250 millimeters of rain falls per year . In the same region, the climate is the same as you have in Montana. These plants have a taproot system that goes 2-3 meters deep into the soil. In addition, you need to try to grow clover, alfalfa and esparcet for seeds. These are legumes . Improving the soil structure from them. Their seeds can always be sold dearly. I have no rains in the Kursk region in the summer from May to September, it is very hot +33.. +40 degrees Celsius in the shade. Try , experiment with different cultures and varieties . You can allocate 5-10 acres for their cultivation . This is a matter for scientists , but they don 't care about the villagers . Therefore , you will have to conduct experiments yourself . I conduct experiments with different cultures myself.

    We put large boots or patches that work pretty well on those tires. We use a bucket of some slimmie stuff that helps us mount the big tires so much easier. Brother has taught me a lot lately. But he has much more to teach that makes life so much better in agriculture. I heard people at the Cafe talking about where they might get wheat seed and I thought about you guys. Still haven't got enough rain down here but our chances are increasing. Had another fire last week which burnt the hay we cut that morning. Hit an old one way wheel half buried in the field which was covered just enough not to see it.

    Hi Kate, yep combines are expensive, the newest (biggest) John Deere X9-1100 is usd $916k base price without header, you can easily add $50k-$70k on options.
    The big 50ft JD headers are around $145k - $160k, Honeybee AirFlex 250 (50ft) is around $200k.
    Even a smaller used combine with a 30ft - 40ft header is around $250k+, ..... very expensive equipment. 🤨

    The drought is really bad. I guess this really hurts your farm. Hopefully you can cope with it.
    Here where i live in Germany near Cologne the river Rhine is at a historical low level. Cargoships cant move, or only with very little payload. They are an important means of transport for any bulk cargo, for example like fuel. It already shows with products or raw materials not available. There are also lots of forest fires, mostly in the south of Europe, way more than there are usually. But also here in germany, where these fires are rather unusual. I cant remember such an intense drought.

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your great story and wonderful kindness!!! Yes this drought is financially devastating for farmers. We have been farming since 1912 and we save money because we know that there will be really bad years. We have had a lot of really good years too. If farmers have debt though this can completely wipe them out.
