    Pretty clear Canyon just listened to the UCI roadies and made a roadbike with wider tire clearance and tilted drops. For American style gravel (you know... with gravel on the ground) or bike packing, Grizl remains king insofar as I can tell

    • @justinjewell1043
      @justinjewell1043 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh maybe check the specs. This Grail is less aggressive on paper than either the prior Grail or Grizl. Longer wheelbase, slacker head tube, shorter stem, etc. Pros aren't riding this setup stock. They're going with longer, narrower handlebars (see Peter Stetina and even Valverde at Gravel Worlds). Personally, I was hoping they leaned a little more toward proper road bike geometry. I like what they did with the Endurace and wish it was closer to that geo. BTW this is coming from someone who races gravel and does the occasional bikepacking trip. All the mounts are a nice touch though!

    • @cjohnson3836
      @cjohnson3836 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinjewell1043 The stack has increased but the reach is nearly identical. They've elongated the TT, the shorter stem is simply to compensate for that. And the HTA isn't slacker. They've simply smoothed the progression across the size ranges. For the sizes that most humans will actually be riding (small for men, because their sizing is retarded), the HTA is steeper. Its actually only .3 deg off from an Endurace. You saying you race is irrelevant. I also race. This bike is more road than I would ever care to put on a typical course here.

    • @justinjewell1043
      @justinjewell1043 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cjohnson3836 Me saying I race is irrelevant? Thanks man. Not insulting in the least. Most don't race, though. In any case I don't know where "here" is (nor do I care). And I'll ignore your HTA assessment because...huh. And I'll also ignore your use of "retarded" which is weird in this day and age. Stack and reach aside, and I said "on paper," this bike is less aggressive than the prior Grail (which I own). Unclear what we're arguing about here when you don't even seem interested in a more road-like, aggressive gravel race bike. Argue to argue, I guess. TH-cam haha. And yes I know longer TT equals shorter stem as the gravel bike norm in most cases. But 70mm?! For someone like me who's 6' and rides a medium? I should also mention that I've raced the Grizl with its replaceable 80mm stem, which I did with a 100mm one. Felt great and more comfortable to me. That said, wouldn't have minded if they'd gone the other way with this new Grail. IE shorter TT and slightly longer stem. As in leaning MORE road bike geo. But I guess if the pros find this acceptable then who am I to irrelevantly complain haha. Oh wait they don't (see: Stetina, Valverde, and any other pro that's raced this bike and check their stem length, bar width, etc)! And if after more reviews come out and I get the sense this bike rides as roadie as you imply, I'm all in!

    • @cjohnson3836
      @cjohnson3836 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinjewell1043 Its irrelevant because your prior race experience or not has nothing to do with anything you previously stated prior to that sentence. Its called non-sequitur. Its what people do when they fail to adequately consider what they type or say before doing it. I, at least, qualified why my race experience has any relevance as it informs an opinion.
      [And I'll ignore your HTA assessment because...huh]
      Yes, you'll make an argument based on supposed geometry but then ignore said geometry when shown unsupportive of your argument? Gotcha, so we can ignore you from here out as you're not an honest participant.
      [And I'll also ignore your use of "retarded" which is weird in this day and age.]
      Not really, echo chambers for the chronically online only make it seem so as people isolate themselves in online padded rooms. People in reality don't give a flying fuck.
      [Unclear what we're arguing about here when you don't even seem interested in a more road-like, aggressive gravel race bike.]
      My statement made it obvious. The average western male (the majority of people who will ever own this bike, or any bike for that matter) is approx 176cm tall. That puts them on a size small by Canyons fit reqs. You can't look at the entire range and assume equal weights. Do you not understand the concept of a weighted mean? Most people will be on a small. Very few people will be on large up. This is what the educated call a distribution. You must weight expectations by the distribution of sizes that actual real people exist within. Most people will be riding a small. Therefore, small sizes of this bike are the most relevant to compare between years. The old model, at the small size that majority of people will be riding, is in many marks less aggressive than the new model. I know its late in the English speaking side of the world but go drink some pre-workout and try to keep up.
      The rest of you post is more non-sequitur and emotional appeal.

    It's a sign. A month ago the CANYON Company bike truck had a "Try Riding" sign at the Seal Beach, CA location where they stopped over. They had 20 bikes for people to try out. I was talking to the 2 staff members there and I told them I've never been close enough to a CANYON bike before but I told them I've mostly seen it on a TH-cam show called GCN so we talked about it all morning. I didn't try one because I have a very addictive personality and if I held one I'd get one. I just recently got my Roadie out from storage and I just got back into riding again. I told myself I wouldn't get one and I walked away but I loved their gravel bikes. Then this video shows up. Haha!

    Canyon is taking advantage of the healthy reputation the brand had been building on over the last years. The Grail used to be a carbon gravel bike you could pick up for less than $3000, in various different component configurations. I used to compare Canyon bikes with brands like Trek and Specialized, and scratch my head, wondering how Canyon managed to pack so much bike into so little price. Those days seem to be gone now, as Canyon capitalizes on the back of that perception of value. Clearly, somebody at Canyon realized they could be charging more for their bikes, which is what we're seeing. Gone too, are the 2 by setups we have seen before, all replaced with 1 by groupsets.
    I am currently in the market for a new gravel bike, and I was seriously considering the Grail. But now I have serious doubts - there seem to be other brands out there that has overtaken Canyon on value - Scott, with their Addict, and Lauf with their new Seigla come to mind. Canyon has introduced a higher, more expensive tier of product, and taken away from the segments where cyclists fell in love with the brand. I don't like it.
    That said, I think this new CFR line will sell like hotcakes.

    • @aliancemd
      @aliancemd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lauf definitely has one of the best prices. I would also add Rose Backroad in here as well - ~1.5K-2K cheaper than Canyon with matched groupsets, same style seatpost and CFR weight

      I agree that canyons got bit more expensive. However, they are still providing phenomenal value. Try to find a gravel bike with 2by Di2, carbon wheelset, full carbon cockpit and downtube storage from other manufactureres (specialized, trek, giant, cervelo, 3T...) and compare this to the price of the CF SLX version. Canyon is still offering the most value for money in my opinion.

    I looked at a Grail when I was buying a new gravel but it was a little above my price point and a little too limited in attachment points. I like to set my bike up to be everything from a street bike to a full-out touring rig and the Grail just didn't have all the attachment points that I wanted. I went with a Grizl and haven't regretted it for a minute. It's a solid bike with tons of attachment points and wheel clearance so it can be set up for whatever I need it to be. I'm also not a big fan of integrated stems as I prefer to be a bit more upright and like to change the stem length to suit my favored riding position. I just wish that Canyon would abandon their love of 1-1/4" steerer tubes. Beyond that, Canyon is one of the few major brands that seems to have gone all-in on gravel bikes, having so many options at a huge variety of price points.

    • @imola8
      @imola8 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was in between the grizl and grail and was not sure what to choose for months. At the end i went with the grail. Altough i also more towards having the most options to configure, i tried to think about what i only dream of doing, and what i do in reality. Wild bike packing adventures, riding trails, needing all the mounts - that`s what i dream of but never do. What i do is commute to work all day (60km) on mostly paved roads and weekend recreational rides on mixed roads with light gravel. Therefore i choose the grail as i think this makes it a more fun bike for what i do.

    Cool bike. I have the Grail Version 1 with the hoverbar and love it. The only gripe i have is the proprietary cockpit. It cant be adjusted so you better be fine with it. Cant change the rise or reach, and you cant put arerobars on it if you wanted...at least Canyon discourages it.
    Seems like many high end bikes are coming out with non adjustable integrated stem/handlebars. I can remember bike dealers pushed getting a custom fit was of paramount importance, paying $500 dollars for a custom bike fitting was money well spent.
    It seems that with the high end bikes now coming out, the only choice you can make is the frame size and seat height.

    it looks nice, i agree with the point on the Grizl being used more. I 'upgraded' my Grizl to run the Canyon H31 Aerobar and it did help with a more race focused ride. The onboard storage is a nice touch though at 5k for the low end model to include storage I think I'll stick with the Grizl for now :)

      I got Grizl SLX frameset ordered and waiting it from Canyon later this month. This new Grail might be just what I'm looking for but 42 mm tire clearance only might put me off. I want to be able to ride snowy roads and lake ice in the winter.

      @neilclarke-smith9431 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sloikalamos it was just a case of removing old shifters and bartape, stem and fitting the new integrated bar /stem. One thing to be aware of was I made sure to order Canyon EP1297-01 Wedge Extention which isn't included with either the stem spacers or handlebar. It stops the handlebars applying too much pressure to the carbon stem and cracking it. Apart from that it was easy, only other upgrade was switch from SRAM APEX RD to SRAM GX RD with a 10-50 at the back.

  • @LifeofMaik

    At this point, take a Carbon race mountainbike hardtail from around 2015, make it aero, slap a rigid fork, drop bars and skinny mtb race tires on and you have the same thing.
    Even the geometry is similar.
    Longer reach/top tube, shorter stems and a slacker headangle, the same thing that mountainbiking experienced a couple years ago.
    It's just history repeating itself.
    Give gravel 5-10 more years and you'll find old school XC racetracks being re-used.
    You think I'm complaining? Actually, I'm happy. The exploration and mile crunching is being reduced in MTB so sure, take it!

    Appreciate the unmentioned grommets for a top tube bag.

    Fairly clean cockpit but absolutely not a fan of exposed cables of any sort in 2023. Dealbreaker.

"I'll buy a Canyon today", they either don't have the color shown in reviews and if I wanted another color, they don't have anything in stock. Also, a non-round seatpost on a gravel bike is a no-go. Gravel bikes all can benefit from dropper seat posts or the ability to add it at a later time. This is a bike that was designed for a flat race with no steep descents.

    Kudos for them dropping those goofy handlebars. Too bad they don't understand the difference between tire clearance and mud clearance. Just because you only plan to run 42mm tires, doesn't mean you don't need a lot more clearance for the sticky stuff. Basically they've built an Aspero 5, which is a great bike except for limited mud clearance.

      @@johnhutto71 I, too, have an Aspero and while running 40mm tires in Kansas this past summer, I was perhaps the most miserable I've ever been in my life. If you haven't had problems with clearance, it's only because you haven't ridden in muddy enough conditions. Besides, it's better to have clearance and not need it than to need it and not have it. Deliberately limiting a gravel bike's clearance to barely 42-43mm completely limits the bike to the sorts of courses it can be used for.
