Riding Coast To Coast In A Day - Can We Make It?

- It’s autumn, so that means it’s time for an epic ride! Si and Alex ride the new Canyon Grail on a brand new coast to coast route, stretching from Clevedon on the Bristol Channel to Bournemouth on England’s south coast, via Lloydy’s pull up bar (yes, Dan makes a cameo!) Battling a raging headwind and the fading evening light, will they make it?

What’s your favourite gravel ride? 🚴
The Mineral Tramways Coast to Coast trail from Portreath to Devoran
This is helping to convince myself I need a gravel bike!
@@mariomora51
Don't do it M8, its a gate way drug to FULL ON Mtb
Just say NO
You rode some of it on the last bit of your ride
Most backroads where I live, but sadly they’re slowly being converted to pavement with all of the growth.
Surprised Si’s glasses fit through those narrow paths.
Good thing Ollie didn't go. His brain would have clogged the route
I'm surprised he fits into his bibs 😯😂
He looks like Robert De Niro at the end of Casino😂
Respect to the cameraman - who rode the same way, remaining invisible most of the time.
The whole way I was wondering what kind of bike he was riding.
@@urouroniwahe uses a unicycle
I’m suspecting an e-bike of some sort.
Whilst pedalling backwards , faxing backward , on a unicycle , with eyes on the back of his head , with one eye on the camera .

The unexpected cameo of Dan and son, was absolutely brilliant! Great ride! Although, I'm somewhat curious about 'The Most Randy Town' in the England....
This looks epic. The more bike packing/gravel adventure videos I watch, the more I feel I should try it myself!
Do it do it do it! If you've unsure on what to take Conor has you covered! 👉th-cam.com/video/t7eivGFhS0g/w-d-xo.html
This was so enjoyable to watch! Alex's laugh is infectious, I found myself snickering whenever he laughed. That little meet with Dan along the route was a treat, those pull-ups convinced me that Dan should be joining some of these epic rides himself! 😁 As always, great vid, kudos to Si and Alex and the GCN film crew.
Does Dan even ride any more? 😅 But certainly he'll be able to lift their bikes single-arm over the fallen trees.
Never not fun filming with Alex 😂 We think these two have got some catching up to do when it comes to pull ups!
That meet up with Dan was so random! Then seeing him pull off those pull ups! Hidden depths.
Alex’s face when Si said that they are riding home
Not enough money in the world to get me to ride home after that!😂
@@alexpatonGCN An offer will be on your desk tomorrow morning 💸
Coast to coast, side by side,
Si and Dave, on bikes they ride.
Through rolling hills and open plains,
They pedal on, no time for reins.
Wow! We've got ourself a Bicycle Bard ✍
update:
Storm Agnus roared with all her might,
But Si and Dave embraced the fight,
Rain-soaked faces and windswept hair,
They pressed on, without a care.
From sea to shining sea they rode,
With hearts ablaze, their passion showed,
Si and Dave, an unstoppable force,
Writing tales of triumph, forging new course.
Coast to coast, their tire tracks remain,
A testament to their relentless reign,
Si and Dave, our GCN stars
The legends of the bike ride, pure cyclists at heart
That drone shot of them both in the forest is sick. Would’ve been cool if it went straight and followed them and then in post, scaled back and had a cool parallax
Agree, it's a great video but a 2 min middle section of epic shots like that would have been wonderful.
Si and Alex is the pairing I didn't know I needed. Great chemistry!
Glad you enjoyed it! Can you think of any other epic challenges that these two should take on?
Unbound Gravel!! I mean, if they stay hydrated, of course.... :) @@gcn

My mum was from Clevedon, she used to party at a house opposite where you guys set off from! 70’s hippy chic…she died last November and she never saw you guys set off from her home town which she would have loved! Great route guys 👍
Great content. such natural chemistry between Si and Alex. This is product advertising done right - brief intro to the bikes wrapped in a cool adventure with likeable presenters.
I don't even road bike, I am a mtber but whenever I see Si in the thumbnail I click. He's so calming, informative, and entertaining
We'll let you into a secret... he loves his MTB too 👉th-cam.com/video/Y43n5ulh2E4/w-d-xo.html
Great looking ride! The head wind must have been brutal! I assume the three bean burrito bowl was a strategic choice. Self generated tail wind to combat the head wind.
Haha, that was a good one; "self generated tail wind" well done
Nobody wanted to sit on the others wheel 👀
I realized that at 45kph you are riding on gravel faster than I could pedal down 15% with a tailwind. You guys are fun to watch. Stay safe.
Gotta love Hengistbury Head and Point. Great place to end what looked to be a fantastic and enjoyable ride.
Really enjoyed Alex's reactions while riding Coast to Coast In a Day. My favorite part was when Alex said he couldn't eat crisps while going up hill and Si said that's why they made gels...
You have those bikes for a week or two and the bolt on top of the handlebars is already rusty. Not a good look, Canyon!
I thought that.
bike lights suitable for gravel (see, not only be seen) on an upcoming tech show perhaps? =)
Michigan is completing the Iron Belle Trail...about 1,000 miles from Detroit to Iron Mountain. I'll probably never do the whole thing, but it's fun to dream...
Guys, when you do these kinds of rides, could you put the Strava link in the description?
Here before a comment with a Strava link was deleted 😂 I'll probably never gonna ride there, but thanks for sharing
It is! 👉 gcn.eu/9Xa
@gcn Thanks. How did I miss that?
@@10kmilesyI didn’t know it but to try a English burrito may be on my list
FKT=First Known Time
I love these and am lucky enough to own a 2004 999R, and I'm sure someone has pointed out in the comments that the complete tank/seat/rear section can be adjusted forward and back to suit your riding preference, and then not so stretched out
You should have called this video „Coast to Coast with a special forest guest“ 😂🙌
I love this kind of video. I makes me want to ride my bike immediately.
OMG!!! I would love to live there.
I just checked Google Maps and it would take 8 Days 2 hours of nonstop riding to travel coast to coast in Australia. From Bondi Beach (Sydney) to South Beach (Perth) it’s 3,945km. 😮
That trip took me 3 days in a car , 17 hrs a day , it would be a killer on a bike camping g on the Nullarbor
Well they cherry-picked one of the shortest distances they could. By their definition of coast to coast, you could do Wallaroo to Clinton in SA which is barely over 50km.
@@dealbreakerc True, but I wouldn’t call that Coast To Coast, as it’s on the same southern coastline. But if we were to bend the definition, I guess you could.
@@carlmederozemtb What a drive that would have been! I’ve only driven from Sydney to Cairns, and that was long enough. It was about 28 hours of straight driving not including stops.
@Hugh-G-Tib it was great, I would do it again tomorrow if I could afford the time and money, without a time limit though
Great vid but there is not excuse to not carry small. Led lights. Come on @gcn it's not cool. Lights in the daylight isn't a bad thing!
Really very nice video, thank you very much! Seems like the SRAM brakes like to scream…
These are my absolute favourite videos on the GCN channel! It's not just watching, but you can relate and "re-live" your own cycling adventures. It gives a whole other dimension to the video. Now my legs are itching and I can't wait to go on my next cycling adventure! Thanks for the awesome vibes!
Super cool to hear that we fired you up for some more adventure miles! Have you got a route planned?
@@gcn The route is not completely planned, but it will probably be somewhere in the forests of south Sweden. 😃
Simon's glasses look like they should come with a snorkel
6:15 very good transition!!!
Superb video - thanks for this. This type of content is what sets GCN apart for me. Loved seeing the guy just waiting to overtake at 3:10 - big kudos to him for not shouting, "On yer right' as you did your piece to camera.😆
I think it was GCN cameraman following them...
Not a pull up. Those are chin ups. Much easier than pull ups.
Looks like a nice route. Stuffed up not packing the lights tho!
Good job you had that really clever Hi viz black kit on.👍
Great ride, right by us. Any chance you would share the route ?
What a great adventure
Hey Alex and Co! How does the bike compare to the new 3T Italia that you were raving about. Both seem super fast and focused on adventure. Which would you pick? On my short list.
Hmm, guys riding gravel yet complaining about getting dirty. Guys, you need to revel in the dirt!
Frome could be a holiday destination.
So glad Canyon has done away with that god awful double handlebar, I would have seriously considered the new Grail if I hadn't just bought something else. Great video as always GCN 🙌
I love my Grizl but I want the grail as a fat tired bike for bike packing vs intended gravel riding
LMAO, cyclist arm muscles on full display... :D I'm in the same category ;) Hat tip off to Dan though!
Dan! Pull-up competition, Froome facts, your calves have grown calves!, comedy gold!
I enjoyed that you seemed to be having such fun. Made me want to ride along with you. Of course I’d be dropped straightaway. Luckily can ignore all that watching on TH-cam.
That is a very nice 8k bike Sy’s riding 🥴 bike prices are RIDICULOUS these days.
Dan's ankles won't get any stronger doing that exercise! Perhaps he has read his physiotherapist's instructions upside down???
Full kit Lycra should keep you safe in Frome😊
Dinner: It can only be fish and chips and a pint (or three) of Palmers beer. Inspiring ride chaps👍
My first thought was the USA coast to coast then I remembered what channel I watching
Nice video but you really should have had lights on for that last section.
Is the screw in the gear groove of the handle bar already rusty? Makes me a bit nervous on a new bike…
Oh I do like a coast to coast , three weeks ago I did a solo tynemouth to past Carlisle in 6 hours . It was a great day really enjoyed it 😅
Sounds like you were lucky to escape from Frome with your dignity intact, very risky with a brazen display of wedding rings. Epic ride, love it!
Awesome video!! Makes me want to get a gravel bike. Question for you guys, what are the glasses Simon wearing? Thanks for the hard work you guys put on and it looks like you guys had fun!!
geometry is catching up. still not quite what i like.
the old 2016 voodoo maresa i used to make my gravel bike in a medium is 69.5 degree HA, 73 seat tube angle. 109cm wheelbase, with a 50mm stem it's 60cm top tube.
nice to see it's other brands have only taken 8 years to catch up to the idea of what makes a good gravel bike (not that voodoo ever designed this as a gravel bike, purely me noticing it's specs and thinking it'e pretty close to a rigid mountain bike i can slap drops on with a short stem and make it work)
Loved this, and this kind of content. Both presenters were fun, completely real about the ups and downs. Super fun.
Still looking for the BIG thumbs up button. I can only find the regular one, but credit for another fun video.
Good to see Alex took his bowls with him……
Can’t believe you went through Frome! My home town! 😂 Also there’s no way you guys rode up that path after 12:24 as I’ve been down it and it’s pretty savage! Looks like you went on the old Roman road too crossing the dual carriageway I did that today. I nearly got lost on that path too.
Love that Dan Cracked out 12 pull-ups.
He is evolving into a big sprinter!
@@chrisridesbicyclesFuture masters 200m world champ on the velodrome!!!
12 is nothing for Dan 💪 - How many miles can those legs pedal though?
@@gcn Time to put them through a test. If there are some beers up the road, they should still work well.
If the Romans had gravel bikes.
Y’all are amazing! I truly live vicariously through you! Lol Love the new bike! Would love to own one someday!
Could have made that an easier trip by using Si's glasses to paraglide own from rhe highest point.....
I gota say mates they picked and put together a really top notch, funny, serious pro. team together toped by none i can find. All put together in a informative entertaining way.
Great video's guys and gal.

Love your content, guys! One question: how tall are Si and Alex and what frame sizes were they riding? Looks like Si went for M and Alex for L, is that correct?
That is spot on! I'm a 187cm tall😎
@@alexpatonGCN that was the fastest reply ever! Thanks Alex! I’m 188 so L it is for me too then 😊 Cheers mate
Wish I'd known cycling royalty were in my neighbour hood I would have got the flags out. Great views from Hengistbury head if you finished at Stanpit which is what your route finish said the view would have been just as spectacular, cracking ride though
They finished at Hengistbury Head not Stanpit. They had me wondering when they were cycling over Tuckton Bridge. Strava Confirmed it
@@richarddenman1413 not allowed to cycle over stanpit not only that if it was getting dark the may have ended up getting stuck in a bog
Si, trying to figure out my correct size Grail with the stubby 70mm stem. How tall are you, and are you on the medium? Thanks!
Still don't understand the point of a drop bar on a gravel bike. It's not like you are doing 40mph . Cool factor??
headwinds --riding for 60K on flat roads/trails into a headwind is a very different experience on drops vs flat bars
what selfie? you should have had a swim to finish it off. Washing off the mud and fatigue… On the bike thou… bought Grail in June, the old generation, still a great bike and had a nice summer rides in (this is what i need to tell myself after seeing the new release)
Top work Dan, 12 chin-ups is great progress
Great show
Love these big day out videos, looks like a great ride. was a shame to see one of them possibly drop some rubbish on the road...😔
Does this Canyon Grail finally kill the n+1 formula?
The more gravel bikes are advertised, the less interested i am in them. For me, a mountain bike would be the better and more comfortable choice for your route. It just doesn't make sense for me to ride over stones and gravel on a non-suspended
"road bike". With gravel bikes, it's like some so-called innovations that don't make sense when you look at them objectively. But in the end, everyone has to decide for themselves.
40% off road ? A MTB is hopeless on tarmac. Gravel does both far better
A modern MTB would be overkill for these light tracks. Now, a 30 year old Stumpjumper with no suss in sight, that would be the kid!
It's an optimization choice - no bike is optimized for everything (which is sort of what a gravel ride covers) --- speed, comfort, adrenaline, aero -- pick one, sacrifice the others. 140K+ on a 25lb+ mountain bike sounds a bit nutty. If comfort is truly a top concern - probably stick to 100% tarmac.
Try it in the States! 😂
would hub gears been faster?
16:50 Oh, you forgot a periscope?!
As a mountain biker too, it’s hilarious watching the road industry go slacker and slacker. Give it 10 years and you’ll have 62deg gravel bikes and downhill bikes will be back at 68
LOOOL my American brain thinking, BRO you can't even make it coast to coast in a day by CAR! completely forgetting these lads are from the UK lol
@gnc Hi, i'm in search of a gravel bike for performace and travel. I see the new canyon grail cf slx 8 axs and the orbea terra m21e team. The prices are similar but the grail have carbon wheels. is this bikes good for bikepacking and speed? Is the tyre clerance a limit on the grail ? th
Come to Michigan and do the Coast 2 Coast gravel a 210 mile ride on gravel, dirt, sand, and some pavement. Start at sunrise at Lake Huron attempt to reach Lake Michigan before sunset. Better yet send Connor, we can watch him run out of water then drink straight out of Lake Michigan at the end, it is fresh water afterall.
I GOT HIT OFF MY BIKE LAST WEEK IN LEEDS FOLLOWING A CYCLE LANE THROUGH A ROUNDABOUT, THE WAY THEY DESIGNED THE CYCLE LANE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD HAVE ITS DESIGN REVISED! WE NEED BETTER DESIGNED CYCLE ROUTES AND INFASTRUCTURE IN LEEDS AS ITS VERY DANGEROUS AND CONFUSING FOLLOWING CURRENT BIKE PATHS! AND MOT TO MENTION THE DRIVERS WHO SEEM TO NEVER CHECK THEIR MIRRORS, IN FRONT OF THEM OR LOOK PROPERLY AT JUNCTIONS!
I'd love to see 100% of these epic rides be done self supported. Y'all can do it!
I'm confused about this storage system making it "faster", why? : ) is that an in-joke of Canyon?
South Downs Way! I'd love to see a head to head race between GCN and GMBN. Gravel bike vs XC MTB.
Loved the video, but why did the guys not have small front and rear lights for safety reasons? Especially when twightlight?
So... Noticed that Alex was on a 2by and Si was on the 1by. Did Si ever feel like he was spinning out on the flat and fast sections?
I have always heard rumours of a strange ape like creature roaming the forests of Ringwood now thanks to GCN live video footage has been captured
A longer fork rake does not gi ve you faster cornering mate.. Provides more stability on downhills, you don't want faster cornering
I'm lucky enough to live close to the Fosse Way in Wiltshire, and the Ridgeway is a couple of hours ride away.
I'm planning a trip from Liverpool to Scarborough (final destination is not set in stone), but plan to take a week and enjoy it!
Well this is awkward. I bought the old Grail on Sunday and it gets delivered tomorrow. Oops.
This is brilliant. Makes me want to ride my bike with my mates. More gravel please! Missing GCN +
Yes you can 😎
Would love to see you do a series from the East Coast of Canada to the West Coast then return to the East Coast via the United States. I really don't think I could do it, but living vicariously through your videos would be fun.
That's a huge overseas trip to request of people with families🙃
@@veganpottertheveganit would have be done as series in multiple parts. Even if you tried to do it in one go you would need at least 2 to 3 months. I know people that did it in one direction across Canada and it was a 2 month ordeal.

Good job on featuring the bike setups, but you didn't mention anything about the tires you rode. Can you tell us about the tires?
Si clearly worried about Forest Cows.
Great route - great bikes - always take lights and surely for a c to c you have to finish with fish and chips and a beer
There are some massive disc brake squeals in the video. I think mainly Alex' bike. 😂
