I give mad props to Johnny for turning his life around to Jesus Christ. I grew up in Detroit back in the late 70s - 80s where there weren’t many Asians and even less Koreans for that matter. I remember growing up as a kid and getting in so many fights with Arabs, Blacks and White boys since there were no Asian gangs but God blessed me with athleticism, size and strength (6’6” 250lb by the time I was a sophomore in high school) so I held my own but took my share of beat downs too especially when it was 4 on 1. But I made it through and earned respect since I could hoop and an honorable mention all state football player. Therefore, I was embraced by my Black and White brothers in high school and college. Now I am an old man nearly 50 living in LA. Glad I didn’t grow up in LA as a kid cuz I know for sure I would have been jumped into KK or AB and probably dead or in jail! Jesus Christ saved my life and continues to do so everyday!

I agree with you when you say that it takes a lot to speak out on certain things. im asian and I noticed that in our community, we don't talk about our problems because of the way we were raised. we end up keeping everything to ourselves because our families believe that we are too young to even have real problems so when we grow up, we keep that same energy because that's what we were taught. it's good to finally have people speak out about their trauma. it makes you feel like you're not alone and that your feelings are valid too. we definitely are raised with a lot of tough love and it's good to educate people on that so when we have kids, we don't treat them the same way.

I didnt realize how much I can relate to this. I was never part of a gang or committed crimes but the way that Johnny described how his dad beat him up simply because he didnt believe he got robbed is traumatizing and forced him to join a gang. I can attest to the animosity and general vibe from SOME but not all of the Mexican kids and definitely their older brothers and cousins, and even sometimes their parents. You can talk to the mailman and they will tell you to avoid certain areas of Rosemead, etc. People that aint from the area think its all burbs but when you dive into the trenches of El Monte, La Puente, Baldwin Park, and parts of Montebello they still active. East LA is literally next door to MPK. Gang activities aint like how it once was in the SGV but for sure for sure you aint from LA if you didn't know about gangs. I'm old school, 40+ yrs old but I respect this young homie. Today I'm married into an Asian family (Korean) but I come from a very very poor white abusive family. I did my thing back in the day, put in my own work but then I joined the Marine Corps and turned my life around. The Marines gave me a chance to get out of that lifestyle and today make a great career. When I listen to this young guy I just think of my own life growing up and think of all the things we have in common.

Thanks you guys for representing the many sides of Asian Americans. I almost joined WC in high school in the 90s because of bullying, these really opened my eyes in many ways as an adult if I had joined.

One thing I could tell you is never judge anyone's capabilities off of skin color. We got them in all colors shapes and sizes in New York and one thing you're going to learn in these streets real quick is respect for others.

Lol my dad was the opposite. When I got jump back in 7th grade by 4 young Bulldog Mexican gang member just because I was Asian and was walking home from school. My dad told my older brother and his homies to get them back. We drove and stalk them for days and finally hit them up. That foo that jump me white T-shirt was covered in blood. Long story short his parents and their Mexican community cried outrage racism to the principal and I got expelled. Yep it was unfair because Mexican were the majority of Fresno so they won the case even tho they started it. Us Hmong and other Southeast Asians from war torn country of Laos were thrown under the bus.

I feel for this dude fr. When parents act like that towards a kid it causes them to feel they have no one and sometimes get mixed up with the wrong ppl. It’s something I struggled with in the past and didn’t start to even feel right ab anything until a few years ago. It takes time to heal from shit like that and sometimes doing dumb shit is how u take it out on the world.

Dysfunction in Chinese families is quite normal and stems from China's history of being colonized by the British and by the Japanese. 'China's Century of Humiliation' brought much pain and suffering to the parents who survived hell on earth and then having their children live in a racist society where they had to fight to survive. The Chinese Struggle is still largely unknown today, thank you China Mac for shedding light on our Struggle.

i relate to when he says "it all started when i was a kid i mean i didn't know that i had anger issues i was just was reacting. my dad would beat me so i thought that was normal " my dad would beat me every morning because of any accident i may have had/,misbehaver or any inconvenience perhaps it was because he was a alcoholic or maybe because i always did fuck up either way it was too the point if i thought i was doing wrong i would break down and apologize with hundreds of sorry i just wish i could have been more strong like him
