I got back into bluray because of the video / audio quality (as well as the extras) and also 99% of the films I enjoy are just not readily available on any of the streaming platforms (perhaps in some obscure corner of Amazon prime) so I can now watch a lot of my favourite 60s and 70s films and TV shows. I must admit blurays does mean I intend to go off into things such as Giallo or Hammer or Tigon films etc so can be expensive. It can get a little out of hand. Some of the packaging is pretty hopeless for blurays, the disks often are impossible to move or they fall out too easily. I agree, they could make them even more visually impressive. I like the 4Ks coming with blurays as well, always great as a backup
As someone in the physical media community who has seen many breakdowns of it's pros and cons, this video was perfectly paced and still managed to go deeper than most physical media channels. Great stuff.
Can't imagine being born into a world of streaming🤔Always been physical; from VHS to DVD to Bluray to 4K. It's not making a "comeback", it's always been there. There's a reason it's never gone away, people like ownership (loaning, selling, gifting stc).
Agreed! I still have my parents' Blockbuster card from 1998 (lol) and I remember going there on weekends to rent movies in the early 2000s. But by the time iTunes came around neither me nor my friends gave a damn because digital media was so hyped up-sad that the Gen Z and younger kids didn't get to have that experience at all.
My mom makes fun of me because being raised physical media, i can't stand streaming, i feel like most of the time dvd/Blu-ray is faster than streaming. One app i tried was just useless, i don't have wifi so use a hotspot and with these apps its just constant buffering 😢. Ill try to get a dvd from a place overseas before i pay for a useless subscription.
I've been collecting dvd/bluray since 2008 and don't plan on stopping. I don't trust digital collecting or streaming, any streaming service could just remove your favorite show or movie at anytime without explanation, not to mention censorship issues arising.
I’ve jumped back into collecting physical media . Not paying for streaming anymore. I think covid was the reason streaming took off . But with internet not stable I prefer to watch my blu rays and dvds now
Agree with everything! I’ve been going back and collecting my favorite movies physically too. I really regret giving them up for streaming now. But you definitely can’t collect everything and streaming has it’s place for that.
So happy you’re diving into collecting physical media AGAIN. Loved this video. Hope to see more PM content in the future. Either way you have another subscriber here! 💯🤘🏻📀
I had a huge DVD collection, but paired it down with my BluRay collection. I made a list of the top 50 films that i love and want to rewatch over and over. I miss the days of going to BestBuy and Tower Records and browsing the DVD’s and CD’s. I also miss the days of Blockbuster Video and renting a movie.
Me, too! Still have my Blockbuster card in a mementos box. Life and weekends were simpler then, weren’t they? I need to get back into buying vinyl. (Lived my teen years in the ‘80s.)
Same. One other issue is versioning. To get the original cut of Amadeus recently for an anniversary write-up, I had to get an old flipper DVD through ebay as no current release includes the original edit. Similar applies to Apocalypse Now, The Exorcist (though that was recently redeemed with a 4K), The Tin Drum and so many more as tampered versions of films replace rather than augment the originals. Oh, on Star Trek, if you get it on blu-ray you can choose the original effects rather than the CG interpolations. Thanks for this video, you make some essential points.
@@cubsfan-l9x You can but you have to pay for an expensive edition to get it. Maybe it's different where I am (Australia) where the BD and 4Ks only have the Final Cut. My point was more about the limits on versions. In the 2000s the only version you could buy new was Redux.
Since learning about Best Buy’s blasphemy, I am currently going on a blu ray collecting spree in case physical media goes bye bye across the board someday. Physical media will always be vastly superior to streaming
I've missed seeing you and your uploads! I got into collecting DVDs of my ult faves a few years back once I noticed not every season is available through streaming sites. Total buzzkill when trying to binge watch...I'm also trying to be mindful of what I get so it's quite a curated collection atm.
Hey! Glad to be back! Life got in the way with family stuff the past few years so that's why I went MIA :( But I agree, it's annoying when you're on a roll binge watching and suddenly it's like falling off a cliff halfway through a show or season, haha.
It’s never stopped but it has slowed down for me. It’s just harder to buy physical media on the fly. Most of the stuff I get is online. Recently, I did try to make it to the Criterion Closet in NYC but those lines were way too long. Although it is interesting seeing people willing to wait 6-7 hours just to buy 3 movies max.

Many discs come with digital codes, so you can have both versions. Discs are nice, but being able to watch wherever you go is great too. Many films and TV shows are only available digitally, so we often don't have a choice. Regarding resuming playback on a disc, it depends on the "software" inside the disc. Some discs lets you resume where you left off (like most Criterion discs), but some don't. Video on a disc is not really uncompressed; it is just less compressed than streaming video. Only "DTS Master Audio" or "Lossless audio" are uncompressed. Audio can be uncompressed because it requires less storage space, whereas video requires tons of space. Regarding the outlook of physical media, it's not great because almost all other industries -- books, music, video games, and practically all tech-related fields and activities -- have chosen or are choosing digital over physical. Movie studios are not solely to blame here. A broad spectrum of businesses have gone digital too. As Internet speed improves, sooner or later streaming will look as good as or better than physical discs.
The main pro is owning a collection that has value. You can sell it, loan things out to friends. Digital purchases are like flushing money down the drain, it's worth nothing at all, and there's a good chance someday the studios will find a way to steal it from you.

I feel exactly the same, Blu-rays are okay I have many of them but I came rather late to that format whereas I have way more DVDs going from back when it began in the late '90s (still no 4Ks for me). I feel it's the best of all possible worlds this way as DVDs will look pretty damn fine on a good upscaling Blu-ray player, say a Panasonic that upscales to 'HD'. I can't see the prices coming down unless you start buying used. I buy nearly everything used. Wait a few weeks after the initial release and often people are offloading stuff. Either that or just torrent a remux and burn your own. You just have to buy discs and a writer at that point which is an investment of ~$100-150. @@LordDementus1987 I'm glad you brought up Criterion. Criterion is the only company whose releases I'm guaranteed to get for $20 for a blu-ray, $25 for a 4K. Just like I found out - at some point you will run out of space and then Apple or some other online service becomes that much more convenient. Apple is actually quite good in terms of quality and I'm surprised more people don't purchase through them.
4K can be worth it depending on if it's a new and better master vs a previous Blu-ray release. With newer movies, I would agree that there is very little difference.
@@andrewholmes3133 Why is it your first choice? I just don't see the point to buying many of these movies, again, for yet a third or fourth time. Just like I found out - at some point you will run out of space and then Apple or some other online service becomes that much more convenient. Apple is actually quite good in terms of quality and I'm surprised more people don't purchase through them.
U still don’t own the movies streaming is garbage Physical media forever 🤙🤙🤙🤙
4k not worth it, blu ray always look better over all, dvds good to
4K can be worth it depending on if it's a new and better master vs a previous Blu-ray release. With newer movies, I would agree that there is very little difference.
You have absolutely NO IDEA what you’re talking about. Not a clue.
4ks are definitely worth it. My first choice every time.
@@bassage13 Who hasn’t a clue?
@@andrewholmes3133 Why is it your first choice? I just don't see the point to buying many of these movies, again, for yet a third or fourth time. I likely already bought it once on DVD, then again on Blu-ray, sometimes a second time for a remastered Blu-ray, now they want me to buy something again in 4K? This is why I have switched to Apple. Free 4K upgrades and the quality is actually quite good. I have not lost anything I have bought directly through them. On top of that, companies can't seem to make 4KBD players that are worth a crap, they all freeze, and the discs are nearly always scratched.
