Yeah just using the Tokyo 'Subway' length is silly (and which one, there are two). Tokyo has almost 5000 kms of rail transport all up, and some of the trains run straight into the Subway tunnels. The MRT is great but no one beats Tokyo.

I like how you include 90s MRT Map of Singapore. The nostalgia. As a young boy growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, I love taking the train ride as it means delightful views & journey whenever my mom brought me and my brother out especially back then we had to travel from the North to East of Singapore to visit our granparents.

In the early 80s, many of us were against the government's idea of MRT, claiming what a waste of money. 40 years later, now in our late 60s, we are so glad that our government went ahead with it. We need to use MRT every other day. For those who prefer Tokyo subways, try climbing and going down the stairs every day and tell me you like it when you are old. Not to mention that sometimes you need to walk 15 mins from one platform to another.

Well said! I read your comment some time ago which made me a bit skeptical but nontheless gave me some mental preparation for my upcoming trip. But Tokyo's subway stations are on a whole new level of complexicity. The trains are about 10 cars long, and it takes 5 mins to walk from end to end. Not every station is fully equipped with escalators. If you want to take the lift, GOOD LUCK. Even a small station has 4 exits, each being around 100-200 m apart, but the lift only serves one exit. Which means that to get to if you need to exit by Exit A but the lift is at Exit D, then you need to travel all the way to exit D, take the lift to street level, then navigate all the way back to Exit A which may be a few streets apart. It's unthinkable for a wheelchair bound person to navigate this. Singapore's MRT stations beats Tokyo's subway stations hands down. However, the Tokyo's trains are more comfortable as they have cushioned seats and even has heating in the winter.

Tokyo subway's passegers are more considerate of fellow passengers than Singapore's.
It is also true that Singapore nearly decided on adopting the "all bus system" instead of building the MRT train system, based on a first report recommendation by an international transport consultant.
It take the appointment of another transport consultant and more expenditure to get the desired result.
Singapore will today be in a grid locked mess without the MRT system.
    A narrow escape indeed.

Credit should be accorded to much respected former President Ong Teng Cheong who use his common sense to challenge our country's obsessions with using foreign consultants and usually accept their recommendations without raising questions on their reports.
The sad part is that we need to pay for another consultant to come out with the report that our common sense tell us it is what we wanted.

The reason is the extremely packed nature of Japanese trains durimg their peak periods in their major cities.

Completely agree that Singapore’s designs and utility of MRT stations are excellent. However, I have several complaints & critiques of the actual network as a citizen of Singapore:
    1. Interchanges are too long & planned without foresight - for example, transferring at Outram Park takes ages. I don’t really need to elaborate any further… lol
    2. Lack of a second rail line connecting the west side of singapore to the CBD
If you live in Clementi and want to catch a train to work in the morning, have fun waiting for several packed trains before you can even squeeze on. The west side of EWL is at capacity, while in the east there is the upcoming TEL and DTL to offset the capacity problems of the EWL. With the Jurong region line coming soon and dumping passengers at CCK, Jurong East and Boon Lay, the capacity problems of the west side of the EWL will become worse!!
    3. Lack of good transport infrastructure connecting the airport from the rest of Singapore
In KL, HK, and other countries, you have an express train connecting the airport to the cbd/central area. How is it that if you want to take a train to the airport in Singapore, you have to change 2-3 times on an normal metro line, which could take up to 1-1.5h?? And the buses are even worse - no central bus station in Changi. If you want to take a bus to the CBD after seeing the glitz and glamour of Jewel and then u walk into the smelly basement to take a bus. Like ?!!!?!
The tldr is - our system is not perfect, but there is no perfect metro system in the world. We should be critical of what is good and what is bad in order to advocate and work towards a system that is much better for every Singaporean

    • @garfieldandfriends1
      @garfieldandfriends1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I really agree with the lack of train lines in the west area (excluding Bukit Panjang). If they can afford to build 3 MRT lines into the East area, and two for the north, why not one more for the west?
Also, the Changi Airport bus terminal is lol
Yes, it actually does smell at times, especially terminal 3.
Lack of foresight by the Changi group to not accommodate double decker height for the basement bus terminal. All three of them. (Terminal 4 not counted because no one cares about T4 lol)

I believe NEL has the worst air conditioning than the rest of the lines.
I can attest the sign is a bit of a mess because the different boards like first/last train info, platform sign & station name sign at exit are not always using the same standard, especially EWL & NSL. Few of the signs are using newest TEL format, some are using DTL format and some are still using the older pre-DTL format. Like if you go to different circle line interchange station, you’ll realise some of the sign written ‘Circle Line’ in white text while some are in black. (The newest one are in black)

Once must bring my stroller and use stair to go down to the mrt station.
Other than that everything is so fine.

As a singaporean, i think that while singapore's MRT system is certainly impressive it is definitely not perfect and actually has quite a few not really impacting problems that have been plaguing the various lines across the country. I think that we will likely not be able to beat japan in this aspect at least in the next decade or so. But then again i'm a singaporean so i do not have as much information about japanese railways as i do for my own country so this is a biased opinion.

Singapore MRT has a major design flaw. It is impossible to add more train carriages to accommodate increase riders as Singapore Govt wants more to take trains instead of driving.
Each station in Tokyo or Hong Kong has train tracks on the centre and platforms at the side. Singapore station platform are design to have a maximum of 8 carriages.
If the ridership increases, Tokyo or Hong Kong can extend the platform and add more carriages. But in Singapore you cannot.

Now it's all about who has the cheapest bid. Getting the cheapest possible. Older trains can still function better than brand new ones that breakdown within days of operation. It does take a fair bit of research on our part and while we strive to be as accurate as possible, mistakes might be made here and there. We certainly hope it was not flagged because of the video title because Singapore's government agency, LTA, did state that Singapore's total rail length will be longer than major cities such as Tokyo or Hong Kong once the expansion is completed. There are more than 20 different companies providing transit service in Tokyo. Comparing Singapore MRT with just one company Tokyo metro makes no sense at all.
In total, Tokyo metropolitan area has around 2000 stations, more than 100 transit lines and around 5000km of rail lines. And service quality in Tokyo is way better than Singapore.
Singapore may need at least 100 years to catch up with Tokyo.
