I disagree. Even if your mission is to provide ordinary people's view, You should be aware that the way you interview and edit the video can influence people who's watching it. I personally think issues as sensitive as this require more true information than opinions of people sothat people watching this video don't misunderstand anything

That's why they just want to hear it from general populace about their thoughts on sensitive issue. They try to be non-political. I'm a South Korea who doesn't hate Japan. I just dislike Japanese who are ignorant of their history. And it just happens its most of them. Just blame the government right? Let me rephrase, I just dislike Japanese who CHOOSE to stay ignorant of their history. Look at Germans. Even a small kid knows what happened in WW2. Cause their parents/teachers/government teach them. They can't avoid it. Japanese people really need to take off their "good people/victim" facade, and start talking about the atrocities that happened. Stop avoiding the topic because it is uncomfortable. Firms that used forced labor needs to pay. Temples glorifying war criminals needs to be condemned. Politicians who try to fabricate history needs to be retired. Citizens who choose to stay ignorant needs to be taught one way or another. Stop hiding under that, "We apologized already! We compensated!" propaganda. JTBC did a thorough investigation into the "compensation" Japan gave. It went to supporting firms originating from Japan to gaining a substantial foothold in S.K. Our last government, corrupt to their bone, settled the "comfort women agreement" with Japan, without actually asking for the victim's opinions. The money is arbitrary. There was no official recognition or apology for the victims. These are a couple examples of Japanese hypocrisy to regarding historic issues. Really, Japan should stop whining, because there's hope to heal this divide between the two country. They just need to show actual effort, and stop posturing. They could start by opening the exhibition to the comfort women statues again. (Including the one in Germany) Adding to the history books the parts they left out, or edited. Making politicians stop visiting temples that glorified war criminals. Giving ACTUAL compensation and apologies to people who were treated inhumanely during their occupation. Controlling their right-wing media. They are way overboard with their wild, inaccurate accusations. (Moon is from North Korea?) Actually holding up GSOMIA. Leaving information out shouldn't be an option. Stop using Korean companies to do Japan's dirty work. (POSCO) Just stop with Dokdo. It is claimed by South Korea. End of story. Obviously stop with the stupid trade war it began by cutting off key materials to our IT industry. (Stop plotting if at all possible too. Apparently Japanese firms were told to stock up on LED beforehand, so their firms would be less affected when trade war began. LG was the only S.Korean firm that found it suspicious at the time.) And just generally increase historical awareness in the general populace. (There's the internet, all of the Japanese can learn about WW2 in detail if they choose to. A lack of historical knowledge isn't something that can be blamed alone on the government in this digital age. Stop avoiding the topic.) Those are off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more examples. It should be a difficult process, but it is something that needs to be done, and should have been done, a long time ago. Again, I don't hate Japan. My grandfather, unsurprisingly, dislikes Japan. He should, he was born in a period that witnessed all the devastation of Japanese occupation, and the Korean war. However, he taught me, don't judge people by their country's past. I guess that's because my grandfather is a reasonable person. Korean and Japanese are both people, different nations sure, but still people. In his view, as long as the two nationalities stay respectful to each other and treat each other with kindness, there is no reason for hostility that opens up old wounds. He is too hurt to be favorable, but he isn't so fixed on condemning them forever. So don't be afraid of South Korea. "Old people" like my grandfather didn't teach me to hate Japan. Our country is a proud republic. We have a literate, educated population. We aren't brainwashed like many Japanese media think we are. Hell, we overthrew our last corrupt government pretty peacefully with the power of candles! Boycotting isn't encouraged by our government, it is a grass roots movement to counter the economic fire by Japanese Gov. See reason, and start a polite dialogue or make silent but meaningful amends. South Koreans will notice. There are a hell of a lot of educated people in today's age. I don't see why stupid politicians must stand in the way for finding peace.
I'm really sorry that our government have been rude for South Korea. I know what jp army did in past. I think Japanese government should officially apologize to SK. many jp people are ignorant bc of our historical education. I was one of ignorant ppl. It's shameful for me, as a Japanese. Unfortunately, many Japanese people are misinformed or unconsciously ignorant of their past history with Korea, mostly due to the fault of the Japanese government restricting historical information being taught in their schools. In addition, they are coming from a legacy of power, which makes it easy for them to just have the attitude that Koreans should "get over it". This is not to be ignorant of Korea's own misdeeds in the past. However, in terms of Japan-Korea relations specifically, this social dynamic informs many Japanese people's opinions on an issue such as the trade war.
The existence of comfort women is a fact, so that woman who made that comment about it being a rumor is seriously misinformed. Regardless, I wish both countries the best of luck. Both government has their reasons behind the trade war, but its the people and local businesses that will suffer mostly

I am not trying to defend the Japanese side but I feel sorry for the Japanese citizens because it is not their fault that most people don't know anything about the past. It's the government's fault. And again most Japanese people don't vote against the current government because they don't know anything about what happened during the war.

I think most of the older Japanese people (30 and above) definitely know about history, the war and of course the comfort women issue. But they do speak about it carefully, as in with careful words, as it is such a touchy and difficult topic. True is that there is a tendency in the quite young people not to know about their own country history. As well as there is a tendency that many of the quite young really can't spell and write correctly. But that is not a Japanese issue, it's a Western world issue, it's like that everywhere
Imagine how Japan would react if America Govt actively denied or blind-eyed about both Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing, while American citizens mostly weren't aware of it
Don’t get me wrong ok? Japan apologized officially and paid tremendous reparation including for each war victims countless times. And both government made agreements (no more argument about historical matters) many times but Korea always withdraw those agreements and ask japan to apologize and pay reparation over and over and over and over and over again. By the way Korea has never apologized or paid reparation for Vietnam women who were sex slaves by Korean military EVEN ONCE.
2740 java I’ll have to butt in here. There are multiple things wrong with your answer. First, the apologies by Japan have never been sincere. It’s always been a way to shut the opposition. Besides that, Japan still denies countless atrocities that have happened not only in Korea but also in China. Second, if you have studied anything about Vietnam, the troops that were occupied was a coalition of multiple countries organised by the UN and the majority made up by the US. Third, I’m not justifying any rapes or anything, but the rapes and acts were committed by individual, horrible people. But you cannot even compare this to the fully institutionalized use of sex slavery when Japan invaded Korea and China which was even backed up by military officials. Fourth, from what I know, Korea has already talked to Vietnam about the issue and Vietnam has already pardoned Korea. Fifth, what’s the point of apologizing if Japan doesn’t even properly teach their youth about their own history and the damage it caused? I try not to be biased, but when Japan got away with international trials and has gotten away with countless acts of atrocities and still denies history despite evidence on the table, I find it only natural for the nearest country to step up.
I think Japanese people would say they are sad to know it. But I think that's all they say or do. I don't think they get panicked or start asking for apology or asking for revision in textbook or anything. Because they are already happy about relationship and they don't really care about the past they didn't actually experience.
Dark of the knight , You She. The main reason this is an issue at all IS because of the fact that the general public in Japan is completely clueless. Imagine if Germany denies that the Holocaust ever happened, or Europe and America completely denies the use of slavery? What would happen? The world would be outraged. This is basically what the situation has been like for many decades between Japan and a lot of Asian countries, and the fact that the Japanese government doesn’t bother to even inform or teach the youth about the details in WW2 is outraged, completely eradicating the reason for apologizing. When countless class A war criminals skip trials and Japan continuing to deny historical tragic events despite photographic evidence, I find it only reasonable for nearby countries like Korea to step up. I am by no means blaming the current Japanese, but if Germany and its youth were also ignorant towards the holocaust, I would be saying the same thing. The biggest issue is with the Japanese governement, and I definitely think there at least needs to be change.
I kind of expected this. The Japanese (at least the common citizen) were indifferent of the politics in general or gave generic answers. Guy in stripped shirt and bag sling had good perspective
in general not a lot of people are interested in history, and vaguely remember things they learnt in school. But it's somehow a trend in the smaller countries, such as SK, to recount stories of past aggressors to their country until people know it by memory. You will find this behaviour in every smaller population that has ever been oppressed. While I agree we shouldn't forget history, we also shouldn't base our actions on past so much so that it is detrimental to our progress. Also, it seems both sides are barely aware of the other side's argument or tries to defend it with arguments. Japan says it's all because of breaking rules and weren't aware Koreans think it's political. The interviewees in SK video didn't respond with arguments to rule breaking and immediately brushed it off as a political action, and it's obvious they got their views from k-media, which, surprise surprise, is as biased as j-media. Where is the truth? Maybe independent sources would have a more unbiased answer. But people also rarely go out to seek "truth" because they're want to rather support their nationalistic sentiments no matter the cost.

As a Korean, thank you for the kind words. But I respectfully disagree with the woman @ 10:27 when she said the people can't do anything about it and it's up to the politicians. Yes the people can do something. And she even spelled it out when she said there needs to be more communication. So let's get the dialog started among the people from the two countries.

It would be great if you could interview Japanese on their knowledge of what happened during WWII. I live on Guam that was occupied by the Japanese for 3 years. We get tourists from Japan and I heard that a lot of them were/are unaware that Japan occupied and did awful things to the people here. We have many museums and landmarks around the island as reminders of what happened during the occupation. So now I'm curious of what the Japanese do know about WWII and how much of it is being taught in their schools.
They just know That japan joining and losing in WW2. But not too specific about what they do. About the conquer, rapes, slavery, genocide, and even the worst thing. That never written in their school history book.
If asking imperial japan to japan young gen, they dont know about it. But ask it to japanese WW2 veterans, somehow they will regret what have they done in the past.
A lot of South Koreans is also not aware of the murder and rape they did in vietnam during the vietnam war. A lot of Americans is not aware that they murder children as young as 10 years during the Philippine-American war because they might fight back. Not every single details in history is being taught in School

I'm disappointed in Japan. I thought they would take the questions more seriously. Especially the ones regarding WW2 and Korean comfort women. But most of them just replied with 'I don't know' or 'They're just rumors'. I'd imagine that *that* is what Koreans are really angry at Japan.
this is not Trade War. It is difficult to manage trade by one country. International cooperation is necessary. But South Korea has not agreed to talk with Japan for three years. Japan has no choice except stricter screening. Japan classify Korea as Groupe B. Groupe B is more advantageous than group C, for example Taiwan. Japan apologized officially for 11 times and paid huge reparation many times to Korea. If the warfare by any country conflicts against the Hauge Convention, the soldier and/or the responsible is defined as a war criminal. Germany had been a mutilation by itself.

it's extremely interesting to hear that the japanese people interviewed did not think much of their country's history of brutal colonization and instead try to hoist the blame onto the korean government... of course japan can't "take back what it did" (to quote one woman), but they've refused to properly apologize and educate their populace, if this video is any example.

I am Japanese and I wish that the issue with Japanese representatives denying past war-time actions with their neighbouring countries would end. The older Japanese population has a great sense of ignorant pride, not like American patriotism, but more that Japan has not done any evil and cannot not do anything bad. I am sure that as the politicians get funnel'd out with younger people this can eventually change. It is the fact that many Japanese are not aware of the atrocities that Japan has done or they deny it. More focus should be brought on mistakes made in the past to learn from them, oppose to pretending the numbers have been exaggerated from Western propaganda or the severity of Japan military has been blown out of proportion.
As long as Japan's top leadership stops paying homage to the Yasukuni shrine and stops whitewashing the past, Korean politicians would have no excuse to use Japan as political scapegoat everytime their popularity goes down, and both sides would live in harmony. I remember how my teacher discussed about japanese occupation in the Philippines. basically the Filipinos were starved and slaved by japanese officials. Out of all country who invaded the philippines japan is the worst. I'm Korean and I wish the best for both countries. I love Japanese people, their culture and the country in general. Please don't think that Koreans hate Japanese people because of this trade war. The boycott is more about the meaning behind the protest than the actual act itself, such as comfort women and how Japan refuses to teach their FULL history to their children (including Korea-Japan conflicts). I agree that both governments need to let down their egos and resolve this issue with peace asap. But to those who think we are digging up old issues for no apparent reason, I want to point out that there is a difference between acknowledging your mistakes publicly and fabricating history to make yourself look better (museums, textbooks, photos). We just want peace and to move on from the past just as much as Japanese people. If you didn't do anything wrong, why change the topic and never acknowledge it? If you're not guilty, come out and state your innocence. As for the woman who defended the actions of Japan by accusing Korea of also doing the same with colonialism and women, anyone has the right to demand justice even when they have also wronged others. That is life. No country is innocent and Korea has definitely made terrible mistakes. But diverting your own mistakes by pointing out the flaws of your accuser is just pathetic and undignified.

I am English and wish that every country was at peace with others. I’m very saddened that the Koreans are still upset at their ladies being used as comfort women by the Japanese, however in wartime, I believe all Asians were as vicious as each other. My late father in law who died in 1998 was a lovely man and so as a teenager I remember being especially shocked when his hatred of the Japanese came tumbling out of his mouth. It stunned me so much and I had no idea why until a couple of years ago whilst compiling my husbands family tree and found out my husband’s grandfather he never knew, had been shot down by the Japanese over the Pacific Ocean in wartime. Even though my father in law never forgave those who killed his father, my husband and I know that many of those pilots were kamikazes , doing what they were ordered to do, and most never went home to their families either. We all have to close the book on the past and vow that history will never repeat itself and to move on harmoniously with each other. We all need to be there as humans to love and support others, no matter where they come from.

Just because "some other countries" choose not to make it a big deal doesn't mean that it wasn't/isn't. Seeing/hearing young people say things like that scare me.
When did korea have comfort women? Which countries did Korea invade ? Korea been invaded by 7 different countries , Korea never invaded others. But Korea still held strong to their roots and culture.

Plus you realize how much education has been manipulated in japan and history has been covered up. I had a Japanese friend who when we were discussing comfort women said it wasn't true and it was a korean rumor (I'm a korean-american) so I wanted to give him other information sources than just korea. along with asking more people. And THEN he finally believed me

These videos make me feel impressed how unified the Korean interviewees were in their information and reason for the boycott, and surprised that the Japanese interviewees didn't really know what was happening or what happened between Japan-Korea in WW2. It shows the cultural differences. South Korea seems politically aware and willing to voice their opinions (or at least follow the trend), whereas Japan seems to flow in the least turbulent path. I am slightly irritated that the JP interviewees think that the SK people/citizens are mad at JP people/citizens, because from the other video, the SK interviewees were very adamant that they are boycotting to voice their opinions on the JP government officials and the decisions made. I feel like the JP interviewees should have been brought up to speed before asked questions on how they feel about the situation.

Just want to point out that when the woman mentioned rumors, the translation and what she actually said is really different. Rumor in Japanese means ‘Uwasa’ and she def didn’t say that but more along the lines of “I’m not sure if it’s true..” perhaps referring to her knowledge on the subject. I hope Asian Boss makes their translations a bit more accurate because one small mistake can be interpreted very differently.

I actually like Japan and its culture a lot. I had the chance to visit Tokyo and the politeness and hospitality of the Japanese are amazing. But this video showed me another side of the Japanese people that I had previously overlooked. I am so disappointed by the ignorance of ordinary Japanese citizens about their past, and on this issue. History is not simply a thing that one can shrug off and pretend like nothing’s happened. Many of them can’t grasp the roots of the issue, and blindly believed their politicians and listen selectively to what is being presented to them.
I know this is a valuable excuse. But Korea did this to Vietnam too and didn't really formally apologize and don't acknowledge it really. It's just an example. It doesn't excuse the Japanese government hiding or not acknowledging comfort women

Whether their ancestors kill your ancestors or your ancestors kill theirs, they'll just ignore it and not think about the past. I'm a Singaporean and Japan has done countless of terrible things to Singapore in the past as the other countries in Asia but our today's generation don't harbour hatred towards Japanese or Japan because we simply just don't have the time to hate someone based on their past like some koreans do regardless if history is changed or not.

Nobody is perfect, but that is no excuse to keep yourself in the dark. Went here after I saw the other side of the story. I feel bad for Japanese people who doesn't know the history of their own people, but at the same time, I am happy to see how the young Japanese thinks about the countries' relations. They are still showing their resiliency. Both countries share a different sense of national pride. This trade war isn't not just about not following trade regulations. I am talking about WW2, Comfort Women and the Liancourt Rocks. Media in both countries portrays each other in a bad image or reputation. It's the people who suffers a lot.

It's really sad to see what could be a great and powerful friendship in between Japan and South Korea be torn apart by the politicians and media of their respective countries. The citizens of the countries know that they don't have problems with each other, but have problems with the governments. It's much like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the U.S.-Mexico conflict. This was when the Japanese military occupied the previous capital of China, but when they did, all hell broke loose. As the name suggests, rapes went far into 5 digits and deaths going haywire. The Japanese governement denies that this ever happened, despite photographic evidence and witnesses from numerous journalists and even ex Japanese soldiers. Comfort women as you have heard, was also only recently recognized and as far as I know, the Japanese government has been denying it for over 6 decades. Countless human experiments were also conducted in which the Japanese still refuse, but I don’t want to get into detail.
You would think the young are more informative with the help of the internet, but I see some heavy censorship here. And yes, education plays a role in political censorship although not readily visible to the naked eye.

Keeping your people in ignorance is the ultimate crime. Japanese-Asian relations have rarely been anything beyond business agreements because of Japan's denial of wrong-doing in their colonial past. This video shows how much history is left out of their education, and what really annoys me is how this gets ignored by western press (mostly because Japan is currently an ally). When people talk about democracy and the right to govern themselves, that is conditioned on what you know about the world. If you never knew an issue existed, you'll never pressure your local representative about it, cascading into the government not having to deal with it. So if the government can engineer their education to leave issues they don't want to deal with out, what difference is there between that kind of "democracy" and an autocracy?

I think Japan needs to recognize the things they did. Also, just because a lot of countries did the same, this fact does not excuse their doings. A lot of Japanese aren't taught what the Koreans and Chinese suffered. Which isn't entirely their fault. But to ammend their relationship or to fix their grudges it might be better to start teaching and learning what they did wrong. And might I add, the Koreans have the right to feel this way, just like Vietnam, China, the Jews and a lot of other countries.

We do not like Japan's government and aggressive nature towards us. They refuse to properly teach history and constantly are aggressive towards us through politics. As a Japanese high schooler, I can say that most of the reason why everyone seems so ignorant is because of the lack of education and good sources. The only unbiased and accurate articles I’ve read about comfort women are in English and I barely even remember learning about it in school. Its rather hard to find reliable third party news outlets too, so it’s really hard to find out the full truth. It’s just sad because I know Japanese people would be able to face the truth if they only knew what actually happened
But then Japanese people aren’t trying to find the truth either... I don’t see anyone making any efforts to say “hey, let’s really figure out what’s happening here”. No one can convince them to care when they don’t even care to find the truth for themselves.

Every person in both videos seemed to have slightly differing opinions and are informed in different ways, but I love how, in the end, both sides have a mutual respect for each other. Yes, both believe that there needs to be some sort of change, but both sides believe in the good of the other. If anything, these videos really gave me hope that things will work out and reinforced my belief in coexistence. Very refreshing from all the endless and shameless fighting we see in America.
It’s because the don’t teach about that part of ww2. The Japanese education system is only focused on memorizing and high test scores. They don’t focus on comprehension. They only teach “facts” not history.

I'm really surprised how Japanese people are ill-informed about the history. I thought everybody in East Asia knows that Japan invaded Korea not once but many times and the earliest can date back to 1592, when several massacre took place. Yi Sun-sin is famous even in China. Besides, personally I think the trade dispute between JP and KR is largely manipulated by the US. Every time when China-Japan-South Korea nearly reach a trade agreement, there's always something weird happened to slow down the process.

Actually, Korean people criticize Japanese government than the citizens. But as an japanese citizen, I think the government always tried to make the situation better in their own ways such as an economical corporation even if they regard that it’s already solved in the contraction as one guy explained in the video. So the problem is many of japanese citizens don’t know about the history what their ancestors did during WWll even they supposed to be taught. That’s not because schools don’t teach the truth, but people in japan regard it as just a short-term memorizing subject. They do learn it to pass the examination for entering universities. I've heard about it before but it was in middle school history class that we learned what actually happend. We read a dialouge that our teacher gave us and it was a testimony from one of the comfort women. Japanese soldiers not only raped them but boiled them alive, experimented with their body, played with the corpse etc. It was the first time I learned how cruel can human be in real life and it was shocking enough for 13 year old to remember it until now.

Is it me or Japanese are either too gullible, easily manipulated or I don't know, someone please tell me. One of the first things one of my philosophy teachers taught us was: "don't believe everything you hear or read, even if I say it myself. Always investigate by yourselves and get to your own conclusions". It's been 5-6 years and I remember it vividly. Being this naive in 2019, with globalization and internet, is not an excuse.

A lot of it stems from their education in school. The Japanese are not taught about their role in war. They emphasize their victim-hood at the end of WWII with Hiroshima and Nagasaki but do not acknowledge their aggressions or imperialism. The same is happening in America, to a degree. New textbooks in certain school districts don't address the Trail of Tears and instead say that the Native Americans volunteered to move someplace else to allow settlers room to grow. The atrocities of the past are willfully being erased by those in power to keep their populace loyal and force an easier nationalistic agenda. This is in no way defending Japan or the Japanese but rather an explanation on why they think or believe the things they do.

My beloved grandma, who passed away 10years ago, married my grandpa when she was 11. I have been curious why on earth she married so early. Yesterday i read an article on comfort women and back then, many teenagers were kinda forced to get married in order to dodge the recruitment for comfort women. I am not sure whether this is also my grandma’s case or not. However, as Korean and a granddaughter i would never forget how much Imperial Japan affect our country on so many levels.

As a zainichi Korean now living in the US, the level of information that a common person on the street has regarding the Japan/Korean relationship, the history of colonization, and true history of what happened is so non-existent, it makes me really sad. JTBC did a thorough investigation into the "compensation" Japan gave. It went to supporting firms originating from Japan to gaining a substantial foothold in S.K.
Our last government, corrupt to their bone, settled the "comfort women agreement" with Japan, without actually asking for the victim's opinions. The money is arbitrary. There was no official recognition or apology for the victims.
These are a couple examples of Japanese hypocrisy to regarding historic issues.
Really, Japan should stop whining, because there's hope to heal this divide between the two country.

Obviously stop with the stupid trade war it began by cutting off key materials to our IT industry. (Stop plotting if at all possible too. Apparently Japanese firms were told to stock up on LED beforehand, so their firms would be less affected when trade war began. LG was the only S.Korean firm that found it suspicious at the time.)
And just generally increase historical awareness in the general populace.
(There's the internet, all of the Japanese can learn about WW2 in detail if they choose to. A lack of historical knowledge isn't something that can be blamed alone on the government in this digital age. Stop avoiding the topic.)

It should be a difficult process, but it is something that needs to be done, and should have been done, a long time ago.
Again, I don't hate Japan. My grandfather, unsurprisingly, dislikes Japan. He should, he was born in a period that witnessed all the devastation of Japanese occupation, and the Korean war. However, he taught me, don't judge people by their country's past.
I guess that's because my grandfather is a reasonable person. Korean and Japanese are both people, different nations sure, but still people. In his view, as long as the two nationalities stay respectful to each other and treat each other with kindness, there is no reason for hostility that opens up old wounds. He is too hurt to be favorable, but he isn't so fixed on condemning them forever.
So don't be afraid of South Korea. "Old people" like my grandfather didn't teach me to hate Japan. Our country is a proud republic. We have a literate, educated population. We aren't brainwashed like many Japanese media think we are.
Hell, we overthrew our last corrupt government pretty peacefully with the power of candles!
Boycotting isn't encouraged by our government, it is a grass roots movement to counter the economic fire by Japanese Gov.

Unfortunately, many Japanese people are misinformed or unconsciously ignorant of their past history with Korea, mostly due to the fault of the Japanese government restricting historical information being taught in their schools. In addition, they are coming from a legacy of power, which makes it easy for them to just have the attitude that Koreans should "get over it". This is not to be ignorant of Korea's own misdeeds in the past. However, in terms of Japan-Korea relations specifically, this social dynamic informs many Japanese people's opinions on an issue such as the trade war.

2740 java I’ll have to butt in here. There are multiple things wrong with your answer. First, the apologies by Japan have never been sincere. It’s always been a way to shut the opposition. Besides that, Japan still denies countless atrocities that have happened not only in Korea but also in China.
Second, if you have studied anything about Vietnam, the troops that were occupied was a coalition of multiple countries organised by the UN and the majority made up by the US.
Third, I’m not justifying any rapes or anything, but the rapes and acts were committed by individual, horrible people.
But you cannot even compare this to the fully institutionalized use of sex slavery when Japan invaded Korea and China which was even backed up by military officials.
Fourth, from what I know, Korea has already talked to Vietnam about the issue and Vietnam has already pardoned Korea.
Fifth, what’s the point of apologizing if Japan doesn’t even properly teach their youth about their own history and the damage it caused?
I try not to be biased, but when Japan got away with international trials and has gotten away with countless acts of atrocities and still denies history despite evidence on the table, I find it only natural for the nearest country to step up.
I think Japanese people would say they are sad to know it. But I think that's all they say or do. I don't think they get panicked or start asking for apology or asking for revision in textbook or anything. Because they are already happy about relationship and they don't really care about the past they didn't actually experience.

Imagine if Germany denies that the Holocaust ever happened, or Europe and America completely denies the use of slavery? What would happen? The world would be outraged.
This is basically what the situation has been like for many decades between Japan and a lot of Asian countries, and the fact that the Japanese government doesn’t bother to even inform or teach the youth about the details in WW2 is outraged, completely eradicating the reason for apologizing.
When countless class A war criminals skip trials and Japan continuing to deny historical tragic events despite photographic evidence, I find it only reasonable for nearby countries like Korea to step up.

in general not a lot of people are interested in history, and vaguely remember things they learnt in school. But it's somehow a trend in the smaller countries, such as SK, to recount stories of past aggressors to their country until people know it by memory. You will find this behaviour in every smaller population that has ever been oppressed. While I agree we shouldn't forget history, we also shouldn't base our actions on past so much so that it is detrimental to our progress. Also, it seems both sides are barely aware of the other side's argument or tries to defend it with arguments. Japan says it's all because of breaking rules and weren't aware Koreans think it's political. The interviewees in SK video didn't respond with arguments to rule breaking and immediately brushed it off as a political action, and it's obvious they got their views from k-media, which, surprise surprise, is as biased as j-media. Where is the truth? Maybe independent sources would have a more unbiased answer. But people also rarely go out to seek "truth" because they're want to rather support their nationalistic sentiments no matter the cost.

It would be great if you could interview Japanese on their knowledge of what happened during WWII. I live on Guam that was occupied by the Japanese for 3 years. We get tourists from Japan and I heard that a lot of them were/are unaware that Japan occupied and did awful things to the people here. We have many museums and landmarks around the island as reminders of what happened during the occupation. So now I'm curious of what the Japanese do know about WWII and how much of it is being taught in their schools.
They just know That japan joining and losing in WW2. But not too specific about what they do. About the conquer, rapes, slavery, genocide, and even the worst thing. That never written in their school history book.
If asking imperial japan to japan young gen, they dont know about it. But ask it to japanese WW2 veterans, somehow they will regret what have they done in the past.
A lot of South Koreans is also not aware of the murder and rape they did in vietnam during the vietnam war. A lot of Americans is not aware that they murder children as young as 10 years during the Philippine-American war because they might fight back. I am Japanese and I wish that the issue with Japanese representatives denying past war-time actions with their neighbouring countries would end. The older Japanese population has a great sense of ignorant pride, not like American patriotism, but more that Japan has not done any evil and cannot not do anything bad. I am sure that as the politicians get funnel'd out with younger people this can eventually change. It is the fact that many Japanese are not aware of the atrocities that Japan has done or they deny it. More focus should be brought on mistakes made in the past to learn from them, oppose to pretending the numbers have been exaggerated from Western propaganda or the severity of Japan military has been blown out of proportion.
As long as Japan's top leadership stops paying homage to the Yasukuni shrine and stops whitewashing the past, Korean politicians would have no excuse to use Japan as political scapegoat everytime their popularity goes down, and both sides would live in harmony. I'm Korean and I wish the best for both countries. I love Japanese people, their culture and the country in general. Please don't think that Koreans hate Japanese people because of this trade war. The boycott is more about the meaning behind the protest than the actual act itself, such as comfort women and how Japan refuses to teach their FULL history to their children (including Korea-Japan conflicts). I agree that both governments need to let down their egos and resolve this issue with peace asap.
But to those who think we are digging up old issues for no apparent reason, I want to point out that there is a difference between acknowledging your mistakes publicly and fabricating history to make yourself look better (museums, textbooks, photos). We just want peace and to move on from the past just as much as Japanese people.
If you didn't do anything wrong, why change the topic and never acknowledge it? If you're not guilty, come out and state your innocence.
As for the woman who defended the actions of Japan by accusing Korea of also doing the same with colonialism and women, anyone has the right to demand justice even when they have also wronged others. I am English and wish that every country was at peace with others. I’m very saddened that the Koreans are still upset at their ladies being used as comfort women by the Japanese, however in wartime, I believe all Asians were as vicious as each other. My late father in law who died in 1998 was a lovely man and so as a teenager I remember being especially shocked when his hatred of the Japanese came tumbling out of his mouth. It stunned me so much and I had no idea why until a couple of years ago whilst compiling my husbands family tree and found out my husband’s grandfather he never knew, had been shot down by the Japanese over the Pacific Ocean in wartime. Even though my father in law never forgave those who killed his father, my husband and I know that many of those pilots were kamikazes , doing what they were ordered to do, and most never went home to their families either.
We all have to close the book on the past and vow that history will never repeat itself and to move on harmoniously with each other. We all need to be there as humans to love and support others, no matter where they come from.

These videos make me feel impressed how unified the Korean interviewees were in their information and reason for the boycott, and surprised that the Japanese interviewees didn't really know what was happening or what happened between Japan-Korea in WW2. It shows the cultural differences. South Korea seems politically aware and willing to voice their opinions (or at least follow the trend), whereas Japan seems to flow in the least turbulent path.
I am slightly irritated that the JP interviewees think that the SK people/citizens are mad at JP people/citizens, because from the other video, the SK interviewees were very adamant that they are boycotting to voice their opinions on the JP government officials and the decisions made. I feel like the JP interviewees should have been brought up to speed before asked questions on how they feel about the situation.

Just want to point out that when the woman mentioned rumors, the translation and what she actually said is really different. Rumor in Japanese means ‘Uwasa’ and she def didn’t say that but more along the lines of “I’m not sure if it’s true..” perhaps referring to her knowledge on the subject. I hope Asian Boss makes their translations a bit more accurate because one small mistake can be interpreted very differently.

I actually like Japan and its culture a lot. I had the chance to visit Tokyo and the politeness and hospitality of the Japanese are amazing. But this video showed me another side of the Japanese people that I had previously overlooked. I am so disappointed by the ignorance of ordinary Japanese citizens about their past, and on this issue. History is not simply a thing that one can shrug off and pretend like nothing’s happened. Many of them can’t grasp the roots of the issue, and blindly believed their politicians and listen selectively to what is being presented to them.

History should be taught but you should also be aware that there are students or people in general who just don't bother about such matters.
Whether their ancestors kill your ancestors or your ancestors kill theirs, they'll just ignore it and not think about the past.
I'm a Singaporean and Japan has done countless of terrible things to Singapore in the past as the other countries in Asia but our today's generation don't harbour hatred towards Japanese or Japan because we simply just don't have the time to hate someone based on their past like some koreans do regardless if history is changed or not.

@@Happydumdrum no one is calling them ignorant for having an opinion...the problem is that a lot of the people who talked in the video admitted to not knowing much, if anything at all, about Japan's history and their actions from WWII, and many of them didn't even know about the trade war.
It just shows there is a widespread ignorance on news and politics amongst the population, either from indifference or whatever the case might be.
Nobody is perfect, but that is no excuse to keep yourself in the dark. If you're going to talk about a political issue like this one and make blanket statements about others (Koreans in this case) at least inform yourself about the situation before doing so.

Went here after I saw the other side of the story. I feel bad for Japanese people who doesn't know the history of their own people, but at the same time, I am happy to see how the young Japanese thinks about the countries' relations. They are still showing their resiliency. Both countries share a different sense of national pride. This trade war isn't not just about not following trade regulations. I am talking about WW2, Comfort Women and the Liancourt Rocks. Media in both countries portrays each other in a bad image or reputation. It's the people who suffers a lot.
There is a number of super-uneducated people in any countries. Sad thing is that the modern history isn't well taught at the history class.

It's really sad to see what could be a great and powerful friendship in between Japan and South Korea be torn apart by the politicians and media of their respective countries. The citizens of the countries know that they don't have problems with each other, but have problems with the governments. It's much like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the U.S.-Mexico conflict. The Japanese governement denies that this ever happened, despite photographic evidence and witnesses from numerous journalists and even ex Japanese soldiers.
Comfort women as you have heard, was also only recently recognized and as far as I know, the Japanese government has been denying it for over 6 decades.
Countless human experiments were also conducted in which the Japanese still refuse, but I don’t want to get into detail.
Japan never once legally accepted the atrocities they have committed unlike Germany. If that was the case, the compensation would be thousand fold.

Keeping your people in ignorance is the ultimate crime. Japanese-Asian relations have rarely been anything beyond business agreements because of Japan's denial of wrong-doing in their colonial past. This video shows how much history is left out of their education, and what really annoys me is how this gets ignored by western press (mostly because Japan is currently an ally).
When people talk about democracy and the right to govern themselves, that is conditioned on what you know about the world. If you never knew an issue existed, you'll never pressure your local representative about it, cascading into the government not having to deal with it. So if the government can engineer their education to leave issues they don't want to deal with out, what difference is there between that kind of "democracy" and an autocracy?

In well urbanized countries it happens a lot I guess. Like America. But honestly I think it has to due with their facist past. National history education programs always make our own country looked good, by showing the positives and hide the negatives instead of 100% accurately tell what happened. So they probably have never been told in detail, not that they are ignorant and white washed.
As a South Korean, I really have no problem with Japanese people. I have visited Japan many times and have made many friends with the locals. However, 5:16 and 5:38 is a problem. We do not like Japan's government and aggressive nature towards us. They refuse to properly teach history and constantly are aggressive towards us through politics. As a Korean who only wishes to become neighbors and have only good relations with Japan, this makes me very sad.

The 1965 treaty isn't ignored. And that has no reason to be brought up now. Korean high court decided Japanese firms needed to compemsate not the government. It keeps with the treaty.

As a Japanese high schooler, I can say that most of the reason why everyone seems so ignorant is because of the lack of education and good sources. The only unbiased and accurate articles I’ve read about comfort women are in English and I barely even remember learning about it in school. Its rather hard to find reliable third party news outlets too, so it’s really hard to find out the full truth. It’s just sad because I know Japanese people would be able to face the truth if they only knew what actually happened

Watched this right after I watched the Korea's side video. Every person in both videos seemed to have slightly differing opinions and are informed in different ways, but I love how, in the end, both sides have a mutual respect for each other. Yes, both believe that there needs to be some sort of change, but both sides believe in the good of the other. If anything, these videos really gave me hope that things will work out and reinforced my belief in coexistence. Very refreshing from all the endless and shameless fighting we see in America.

I'm really surprised how Japanese people are ill-informed about the history. I thought everybody in East Asia knows that Japan invaded Korea not once but many times and the earliest can date back to 1592, when several massacre took place. Yi Sun-sin is famous even in China. Besides, personally I think the trade dispute between JP and KR is largely manipulated by the US. Every time when China-Japan-South Korea nearly reach a trade agreement, there's always something weird happened to slow down the process.

Actually, Korean people criticize Japanese government than the citizens. But as an japanese citizen, I think the government always tried to make the situation better in their own ways such as an economical corporation even if they regard that it’s already solved in the contraction as one guy explained in the video.
So the problem is many of japanese citizens don’t know about the history what their ancestors did during WWll even they supposed to be taught. That’s not because schools don’t teach the truth, but people in japan regard it as just a short-term memorizing subject. They do learn it to pass the examination for entering universities. I want people aware the core we need to change is the way of education in Japan. It should be with curiosity and motivation of students themselves.
Japanese students should be taught at school about details of what they did. Merely learnig the fact that Japan invaded Korea and there was something called comfort women is not enough. The actual cruelty of Japan that will make most people feel sick should be taught at Japanese school. Because that's how history should be taught and make people really feel how horrible the war was. That's how Korean learn the history and I heard German and other European countries also make their student learn WW2 by teaching and showing them what really happened

I've heard about it before but it was in middle school history class that we learned what actually happend. We read a dialouge that our teacher gave us and it was a testimony from one of the comfort women. Japanese soldiers not only raped them but boiled them alive, experimented with their body, played with the corpse etc. It was the first time I learned how cruel can human be in real life and it was shocking enough for 13 year old to remember it until now.

Is it me or Japanese are either too gullible, easily manipulated or I don't know, someone please tell me. One of the first things one of my philosophy teachers taught us was: "don't believe everything you hear or read, even if I say it myself. Always investigate by yourselves and get to your own conclusions". It's been 5-6 years and I remember it vividly. Being this naive in 2019, with globalization and internet, is not an excuse.

A lot of it stems from their education in school. The Japanese are not taught about their role in war. They emphasize their victim-hood at the end of WWII with Hiroshima and Nagasaki but do not acknowledge their aggressions or imperialism.
The same is happening in America, to a degree. New textbooks in certain school districts don't address the Trail of Tears and instead say that the Native Americans volunteered to move someplace else to allow settlers room to grow.
The atrocities of the past are willfully being erased by those in power to keep their populace loyal and force an easier nationalistic agenda.
This is in no way defending Japan or the Japanese but rather an explanation on why they think or believe the things they do.

My beloved grandma, who passed away 10years ago, married my grandpa when she was 11. I have been curious why on earth she married so early. Yesterday i read an article on comfort women and back then, many teenagers were kinda forced to get married in order to dodge the recruitment for comfort women. I am not sure whether this is also my grandma’s case or not. However, as Korean and a granddaughter i would never forget how much Imperial Japan affect our country on so many levels.

I can't fully blame the Japanese for not knowing as they are not taught the details of the colonization or the war crimes in classrooms and when you turn on the news, what you hear from these folks are verbatim what the news pundits say. The guy misunderstood about the agreement at 1965 that was for the Korea nation and Japan nation took indemnities the money was taken by all of the war criminal companies from Japan to make subway and other structures etc. Korea judicial branch made a judgment about the forced people to the company is Mitsubishi at 2017 and Korea is the separation of a legal country.

It's not just Koreans who were made to be comfort women by the Japanese soldiers during the war. They did that to most (if not all) countries they fought and/or defeated then.
