I remember as a kid my grandpa had a hole dug about 4 feet deep and he loaded it with grass clippings all summer, kept the water from freezing for the most part with the water he put over it, nice to see you keeping these old tricks alive.
Good information I've learned a lot and appreciate it. I don't have a need for this but my cousin is always trying to find the tricks of the trade and you sure have a winner here. Enjoyed the video I'll pass it along. God Bless. NW ga.
Great progress You may want to consider removing the snow from off of the black painted surfaces. Optimize what you applied. Best of luck with your project.
You thought the whole construction through well to the end. With knowledge of natural physics you will be successful. I hope many people have seen it and can recreate it successfully. Well done, Jim 👍🤠
Thanks Peter. It was a fun and useful project. Learned alot with it. I’m sure it can help some one out and glad I shared it. Hey Peter how are the farmers holding up your way? See they have plowed a line in the sand. Getting crazy world wide. Stay safe my friend ✌🏻⛏️✨🍻
You might consider a way to circulate the air from the bottom of the hole to the top. If you try this method, make sure the air movement is very slow. maybe use an adjustable solar squirrel cage, just a tiny one. Or use a cpu fan and a length of PVC, Sit it on the bottom of your pit and let the fan push air from the bottom to the top. I was also wondering if you could turn it into a composting hole. Might get too hot then, lol.
This is quite an interesting discovery for me. I dont know if the water bubble up is due to the warm air rising from below the hole, but it is working out fine. That's awesome! I'd had quite a chuckle when the text said "wife said get your own tupperware" 😂
Found the original video searching for options, and glad to see this update. Hoping to do this in the spring. Look forward to more videos if you change anything!
I love the channel! Great tips here. I saved the video. We're in Southeast Missouri so we have cold spats that get into single digits for a few days but for the most part we hang out in the 20's at night from Dec-Feb so this watering idea is perfect! I will be making one of these as I'm tired of plastic heated waterer's busting. Thanks for the info here! God bless you and your family!
I really do appreciate that!!! It’s a perfect fit for your area. Me too this was a blessing. Got family in Missouri . Your welcome and same to you and yours 🙏✌🏻
Wow. Gotta give you respect. An extension cord and some power would have been so much easier, but, you choose to rely on a much more reliable method- a tried and true method and some good 'ol elbow grease! 🙌 It's the last week of July and here in northern NYS, and our winters aren't as brutal as in yours are come January/February. Bought some chicks last week - first time raising hens - and looking for the safest ways to keep them happy, healthy and safe their first winter. My biggest issue, it seems, will be finding someone to hire to dig out a frostline plus deep hole (4') for me! 🤣 Anyway, I found your video very useful and appreciate the dedication you had in following up with details on the temp tests and your results. Also, unlike many other TH-camrs, *you actually answered the questions your viewers asked!* Great job, all around, so thank you, keep cool the rest of this summer and hope to see more of your videos! *SUBSCRIBING!*
Very Interesting to see how other people make do , when conditions they have to live with are less than favorable . Great idea Jim , i'm sure the chickens are happy now they have flowing water round the clock . Great job Brother . 👍👌Stay warm n Toasty and well watered , bit o Rum or Port might help 💪Cheers Ned 👍
Ya we just deal with it, not even thinking a lot of people ever even experience winter. Being cheap and the love of trying to figure shit out gets me into all kinds of stuff😎 little sips for me😆✌🏻⛏️✨🍻
I just got done watching the first part... The hole. And now this one. So brilliant!! Thanks for sharing & helping us keep the old ways alive. Subscribed! And now at the end you mentioned using chicken wire or something to make a tube. You could do that, put foam insulation around it. Wrap that with another lay of chicken wire to hold it together, then stick it down the hole. Just a thought 🤔
Very cool. We do have a couple months in Michigan where the temp will go down below the 20’s, but usually it’s not every night. I don’t own any land in the country yet, but I’ve been keeping an eye out for something coming up for sale.
I saw the 4 foot hole with black pipe and the hay /straw and wood box painted black and black bowl and then insulated covers on top. Then you have a little solar pump inside bubbling a little?
Thank you for sharing. After watching your video, I just thought of what if we drop a little solar fan down the hole, if that would help circulate some of that warmth up towards the water…?
Thanks for the extra info which really tells us that this works well. -3 F is -20 C which is what we get to near Toronto Canada at night and some days.
Great job on this, glad to see this update on how it is working. I'm sure this has crossed your mind, but I wonder if there's also a way to auto fill the waterer.
Glad it's still working. Funny how people call all plastic containers Tupperware. I used several electric doggy bowls in the winter for my chickens, but have to keep this idea in mind for the future.
Right on lol we moved the chickens into my old pheasant run for convenience and I never had electricity in this pen. Thought we give it a try. Your feedback is much appreciated ✌🏻
Should I dig a hole, put the tube and maybe a net above it, basically your idea with some protection and build the whole coup around it? The chickens will have the warmer air inside and be happier and also lay more eggs?
I appreciate this video. My chicken water is indoors but still freezes solid sometimes. The salt bottle is working in the teens. Fingers crossed that it helps in single digits.
Another trick you could try is some cheap vodka it will also help the water from freezing….as the saying Goes happy chickens happy Life…I think I got that right
?? im not sure, but I think water conducts heat better than air, so if you just filled the hole with water all the way down that might be worth trying ?
Sounds like a great idea and will try it after this winter. Right now I have solar panel to charge up 3 100AH lithium batteries and unless I invest in more solar panels, what I have is not cutting it. I wonder if a trip or double stove pipe wrapped in insulation would do the job too even though they are only 3-6" wide depending on what you use. I also have our current water tank under a cover so no snow could get on it. What do you think?
If you have adequate mass and insulation, it's no problem keeping the interior of a compost pile 90F throughout winter. If you want to experiment with this heat source, I recommend a minimum of 2-1/2 yards of compost and 6" of insulation. For extreme cold, more compost is better. I typically use fall leaves for insulation. Providing you have adequate wind protection, their benefit drops off significantly after 12."
Have you thought maybe like a dog house , type box over the black box.. paint it all black inside slso, use Clear Lexan on top for a roof ,hinged so you can open it, to get inside. I say lexan because you can drill it easily compared to plexigrass. Useing geothermal idea is pretty cool. 👍
Great idea!! I was going to try something similar this year in my buddy’s dog kennel at his hunting camp. Appreciate the feedback. I put out update video if interested on how it reacted to the different temps and couple adjustments done. Into February and still never froze😊✌🏻 th-cam.com/video/d85UxrC5Gxk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rDsdIHVPEV4hoxKT
Great project. I'm considering this inside the coop for winter of 2025. Loosened deep bedding composts slowly, so that heat helps here (wind/drifted snow prevents having an unprotected chicken run).
Nice! Thanks for keeping us posted on the progress and what works and what doesn't. What part of the country do you live? I am northern NH near the 45th parallel. Might try this for next year.
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge. I wish you would’ve showed us how to install the solar part of it. And where to buy the solar parts at thank you.
Thanks a lot! Sorry about that! Didn’t make edit lol. Solar panel and pump got off Amazon Got the smallest on and seems to be doing good for under$20 The install I drove a stick into the corner of box for solar and mounted to that. It comes with it. Can mount on anything close . And I put the pump in bottom of hole facing up to melt in case of skim ice was really simple and easy I’ll leave the link. Appreciate the feedback ✌🏻 Biling Solar Fountain for Bird Bath, Solar Panel Kit Outdoor Solar Water Pump with 4ft Tubing for Hummingbird Bath, Small Pond and Fish Tank a.co/d/4LPEOaW
Ohhhh, I so want to add a tip up to that hole. I bet there's some real lunkers down there. At least you won't accidentally step in it. Plus, it'll be funny as hell
@@HarmonyHillHomestead1 I’m not sure about that, depending on how cold you get but I’m sure it’s possible with good insulation. We are putting one at my buddy’sat his camp for his dogs. Using 5 gallon bucket for water and we are make a small insulated box with hinged one way door that they can push open to drink but closes when done.

Ya compost generates a lot of heat. Simple things fading away in a complicated world😐 but don’t have to be✌🏻
it got to -40 here so.... fresh water every day was all we could do.

I'm making that now, planning to use it year round. Might help to cool the water in summer, too!
