I use the tire with straw stuffed around inside. I also use a soda bottle half filled with vodka. That leaves a good air pocket. It allows it it float on top of the water.
If outside, The wind and chickens will keep the bottle moving to help delay the surface of the water freezing. If inside the chickens peck at the bottle ( because you know how nosey they are) and that helps keep the surface from freezing so quick.
This is my first time to the channel. I will subscribe and watch. Enjoy and blessings to your homestead.

Interesting, I will test this in my hen house. The floor gets to cold for a water bucket when the temperature goes down under negative 15-20 C/59-68 F and we often have down to negative 30-40 C on and off during a couple of month. So when I can lay my hands on a suitable tire I will try this out. Thank you for the tip!

If you boil the water it changes the molecular structure and will freeze faster. Hot tap water doesn't freeze faster because the molecular structure is the same as the cold water. Hope this helps

Cold water freezes faster. Think about the fact that it takes some amount of time to bring the temperature of the hot water down to the starting temperature of the cold water. However long it takes for the cold water to freeze, it will take the hot water that amount of time plus the time it takes for the hot water to be brought down to the starting temperature of the cold water.

It's already -3°C so I'm already having issues with it. All the water warmers I'd been looking at required electricity so thank you so much for making and sharing this video!!♡

Since most heat escapes from the top of an object, a peice of foam board lid, that covers 3/4 of the surface area, would still allow access to the water for the animals, while delaying the inevitable freeze by perhaps many more hours.
Also, a deeper pan would provide more thermal mass and perhaps slow the cool as well.

Back in the 50’s60’s they used to have food dishes for toddlers that were round & compartmentalized on top, were 2” thick and hollow inside. You could fill them with hot water to keep a toddlers food warm. i don’t know why but your water test made me think of that. Yes I am older than dirt. lol.

I’m glad Olivia is doing her research on hedgehogs before getting one. My daughter had one. It’s like having the cutest little pet with all the most horrible habits and problems you could possibly pack into one animal. Be sure to find a vet who is familiar with them if you get one. Even for routine care. I don’t want to discourage or disappoint her, but tell her to pay close attention to their bedding needs and keeping them from, uhh, getting, uhh dirty. LOL. They need a special wheel, too. Olivia, good luck, and I know you’ll take good care of it if you get one!

This was a great experiment. Like you said, it’s not about keeping the water from freezing indefinitely but to keep it drinkable until your next feeding. If it makes it for 12+ hours, you are golden.
I would add another parameter to the experiment, or rather two parameters,
    1) try it with different volumes of water, 1/2 gal, 1 gal, 2 gal, 3 gal
    2) try it with different opening diameters.

What if you put a floating ball or something inside the water? So that when animals drink they will move it around and maybe keep it from freezing on top for a longer time. Also the wind could blow it around and keep it moving... could be an interesting experiment

    • @scottprice8994
      @scottprice8994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Viktor -- Cattle ranchers put a rubber ball in the water tub to keep the water from freezing for a longer time. Just as you said, the animals moving the ball and the wind moving the ball keeps the water from freezing for a longer time. If a person gets serious, they use a solar panel with a water heater. I do not think that is needed here to provide water for chickens and goats, though. Al can just put out water in the morning and the evening.

Good morning from Florida, a couple of things to think about, the black tire will hold the cold temps letting it get much colder. Also the plain bowl of water was sitting on the frozen ground, try doing it with straw under it. When I was a kid back in New Jersey we used to drain my parents hot water heater ( twice 50 gallons each time ) to fill a small ice skating rink in our back yard and also added hose water it was frozen by the next morning with temps in the mid twenties over night. Good luck with your project.

Although it may seem counterintuitive (all other variables being equal), hot water does indeed freeze faster than cold water because warm water evaporates rapidly and since this is an endothermic process, it cools the water making it freeze more quickly.

  • @hughbrackett343
    @hughbrackett343 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hot water freezing faster comes from old fashioned refrigerators where the evaporator (the part that gets cold) formed the bottom of the freezing compartment, and metal ice cube trays. A tray filled with hot water would melt through the frost and sit directly on the evaporator thus getting cooled directly by conduction to the cold metal evaporator while the tray with cold water sat on the somewhat insulating frost and was mainly cooled by air. If you do the experiment with the trays only cooled by air the cold water freezes first as logic suggests.

Here's another clue: No commercial ice machine or ice plant starts with hot water. Instead they pre-chill the incoming water with the cold water that's draining.

I need to find those rubber pans in smaller sizes for all my rabbits!! I have the plastic crocks from Tractor Supply. I fill them up 2, sometimes 3 times a day and they work really great, but I am afraid the plastic will be too brittle during the really cold temps. I used to fill up a 5 gallon water cooler jug with hot water from the tap in the house but today I picked up a 16 gallon heated horse watering bucket. That thing is nice!! It beats lugging 5 gallons from the house to the shop. Now its a 3 gallon jug walking 30 feet. As for the hot water vs cold water freezing test, I remember hearing that hot water freezes first. I think it has something to do with the minerals in the water. When we get goats and chickens I will definitely be using your waterer idea! Great job and thanks for sharing. Oh, watching your meal prep at midnight is no bueno...now I want to get out of bed and into the kitchen to cook something up! Ugh.

In the forties a nd fifties, before frost free freezers on refrigerators, there would be a buildup of ice on the shelf where the ice tray sat. If you put hot water in hour ice tray, it would melt y the tray down into the ice on the shelf, bringing it more into contact t with cold surfaces all around. I have no research, just the thoughts of a 70 yr old gramma. Really enjoy your channel!

People put hot water in ice trays not because they will freeze faster, but because the ice will become clear. Boiling the water removes the air dissolved in it, producing clear ice as a result.

I did some reading on hot water freezing before cold. Because the hot water is losing some of its volume to condensation in the air (steam) the volume becomes less and with less volume, it will freeze faster. I would imagine its just marginally faster though.

Hot water freezes faster because, it has fewer gases dissolved within in it. Purer water freezes faster. That's why, when you freeze distilled water, it not only freezes faster but, the resulting ice has no frozen gas bubbles suspended within it. If you conduct your experiment, I would suggest using distilled water, as a third comparison against your hot and cold tap water. The quantity of gas bubbles in suspension within each resulting set of ice cubes should prove the point, if I'm correct.

The hot versus cold water issue is REALLY complicated. If you try, you need to ensure both of them are the same amount of water (smaller amounts of water will freeze faster) and the same type of water (distilled will freeze faster than tap water), etc. And even under pretty strict controls, scientists have seen it go both ways; there's no hard and fast answer. Some times the hot water goes first, other times the cold water does. Evaporation, exact weight, air flow, salt content, all sorts of things can cause it to change.

Al, the hot water will freeze first because the atoms are more active thus allowing the colder water to move into their vacated area.

Hot water is less dense than cold water thus it will freeze quicker than cold water that being said the open air waterier will freeze up first or should before the tire

You forgot to add a wider step to the goats hay feeder so she doesn't have to eat her hay sideways. Is the Hedgehog study a project for school or Olivia just likes to study them? Smart girl.

I don't think he forgot. He's probably not gonna do it till Spring. I imagine it would be hard to drill the new plank into the barn and the existing step and feeder (or however he's going to do it) when the wood and everything is frozen solid.

As a mass hot water will freeze slower because it has to loose that heat to get down to freezing temperature. If sprayed into the air the not water will freeze faster because it requires some heat to transition from water to ice.

Try your test in Wyoming, where I am told, it gets down to 15 or 20 or more below zero and see if you still have water or if you, on the other hand, could actually “walk on water“without being divine!

  • @laurabunyard8562

Al, you are not comparing this correctly. Your goat waterer is inside a stick built building with three goats in there as a source of heat. Your New Yolk City is a stick built house on wheels that houses chickens that will keep it warmer. The hoop house with chickens will warm faster than the other places, but will be colder at night because the chickens will keep it warmer. To accurately test this you should have put both in the hoop house and the next day both in the wheeled house. Then you would have all the information you need.

The insulated water dishes look to be working well for you. As for 10 years...the important question is where do you want to take the farm. Are you wanting to raise animals or plants. Interesting question and how you make your income is dependent on the choice you make. Stay warm.

I think the tire water well freeze faster by a longshot say 30% faster because of it being warmer more of it will evaporate and there will be less to freeze.

I’m on my 3rd heated water setup for my chickens, they only last a year or two, I’ve never tried this method because I assumed it was based on the sun warming the black tire and bowl and my chickens water is in the covered run that’s enclosed on 3 sides so it don’t get the sun shining on it, I think I’ll have to pick up some spray foam and a rubber bowl from the farm store and try it for myself, I’m sure I’ve got a pile of junk tires around here somewhere.
