Hey could you do something different and buy a project truck like a 5.4L Gasser, and build it I am building my 5.4L and your videos make it easy to understand Im struggling I want to put a Turbo into it, and a bigger cam but I am not that smart with this stuff!
OK Josh there is a solenoid on the driver side that controls the waste gate on the turbos . Then there are 2 plastic lines from solenoid to the turbos waste gate check the line's they do rub through on anything they touch. Then check if there's is vacuum at the solenoid if not then check the vacuum pump it's on the passenger side front on the motor.
Those old 6.5’s are turds…..swap in a duramax…or even a Lq4 at this point…..correction, that truvk is a p.o.s. And basically needs to just be ran into the ground as is!!! Just continue to make videos with it!!
As a 6.5 and LB7 owner, I think I might know the issue. Delete that vacuum pump on the front of the engine and make the wastegate manually controlled with a spring, just-hook, and a wing nut. It seems like the vacuum pump is crapping out and making it not close the waste gate
I’ve heard that’s an issue on these. Had a friend that owned one, & he was talking abt that exact issue. More black smoke means too much fuel. Either someone turned up the fuel or air starvation.
I’ve owned a couple of these 6.5 trucks and I think what’s going on is you need to delete the vacuum pump and make a manual waste gate spring. It will also help your turbo noise a lot by putting a manual spring on the waste gate
To help with the smoke and just better driving experience take the vacuum wastegate off and put a manual 10 lb spring there are a few videos on doing that I believe Jesse pelkey here on TH-cam has a video on doing a manual wastegate
My dad bought his new in 98, after his passing I got the pickup. All 8 injectors was replaced and the turbo. It did whistle perfectly upon spooling up. I removed the huge muffler to a straight pipe and it really sounded excellent, and the only time it smoked was when I put my foot in it. Only real issue I had was the keepers on the valve would snap loose on the head.
That's a pretty decent OBS 1-ton single axle. Not to common to see one looking tight and right these days. I'm glad that your giving it a one up and keeping it alive.
Follow the vacuum line from the waste gate it goes to a little vacuum controller valve thing that likes to go bad or leak and cause a no boost situation
I owned a 94 6.5 turbo. I miss it. I’m glad you finally got one. I messaged you about getting one a few years ago, maybe you finally saw it. Stick a 6v53 in it. That was my dream.
It's crazy I got my Duramax deleted as soon as I saw a truckmasters first EGR delete video. It helped me when it was a new video and now I just got my first 6.5 tdi and I'm doing things as truckmaster is doing them again
Could be a few things on the 6.5L. A lot of times it was the wastegate control solenoid and the boost sensor. I’ve had it plenty of times too where the vacuum pump itself is bad. Yes you could delete the belt driven vacuum pump but then you’d lose your heater position controls unless you wired in an electric vacuum pump since those operate off vacuum.
Aside from that vacuum controller thing off the waste gate line to look for for the boost issue, you can buy a potentiometer and put it inline with the map sensor signal wire and it works as a boost fooler for those things. It has to be a 0-10,000 ohm potentiometer or something tho if I’m remembering right. Can find it online how to do it it’s super easy
Throw a set of marine fuel injectors in it. Should be able to get a set pretty cheap and they supposedly add 40 horsepower, and it might fix the black smoke issue.
@@joelaidler I’m pretty sure that the different fuel injectors they make for these mostly help atomize the fuel better so they can help increase power, but it mostly comes into play if you either crank up the fuel or tune it depending on if you have a mechanical pump or not
@@joelaidlerthe early 6.5’s were, I think they came out in 92, the 92-94 were mechanical pumps, the 95-2000 were electronic cause the pmd is notoriously problematic
@@Derek-C that’s right. The only differences between the two are the spray patterns and the pop pressure. However, there’s no increase in fuel output so no power gain.
I have been wrenching on 6.5s since I was a wee lad. I have never actually done any turbo or exhaust mods (surprisingly enough. Haha) Now is as good a time as ever! I have a PT Wiring Solutions HX40ii and a diamond eye 4" exhuast ready to go in!
Buy some Chinese marine grade injectors for that thing. Cut the webbing out of the intake, delete the vacuum wastegate by cutting vac pot in half. Piece of ready rod bent into a J and washer, springs and wing nuts. Feed the beast mod and a new lift pump. For under 1k you'll have a 6.5 that will surprise people.
Just doing a Boost gauge, Turbo master, diamond eye 4" exhaust and crossover pipe will really make a difference. You WILL hear the turbo then. The stock exhaust won't let it breathe and holds a lot of heat. As for the black smoke, check your waste gate solenoid. Follow vacuum line from waste gate back to driver's side of engine . Line may also be cracked and waste gate may not be working. Build it.
There is a belt driven vacuum pump might not be working. Also a solenoid that controls the was waste gate. The lines get brittle and break. Best thing to do to it though is put and Manuel waste gat on it
Crazy thing to me is my girl friends Dodge just like that broke down same way so I listened for the fuel pump it was working or so I thought lol after checking all fuses and swapping few parts off a parts truck I had laying around I thought let me see how much pressure fuel pump is putting out because it would start if you turned the key 3 times fast then crank it fire for 2 seconds bearing any pressure eventually went to 0 psi slapped new pump it was ready to go also do straight pipe on the 6.5
I was looking up the dealer instructions for doing valve covers, in there for that intake boot i believe they mentioned that the silicone was factory, mine had the same gray silicone sealant gooped in.
Thanks for the video man glad to see a ol 6.5 get some love. I would check the timing on the pump could be out of time and killing hp and making g it smoke more.
Straight pipe it and put a manual waste gate on it get rid of vacuum pump believe was a 93 in belt on mine after delete then u can dial your desired boost till i think 14 psi then it will go into limp mode without tune
could have put in the extra $100 and got a split vane T6 S475 for that old 6.5 ... build a low idle split vane flap n' flange with a cheap waste gate on it. the flap gate closes the back side vane so at idle the turbo spools as if it is a T3 S475, tho opens the second vane when their is forced air going into the engine so it lowers exhaust pressure at that point and can continue spooling higher. I had to make a split vane actuator, couldn't find nor know where to look in the first place as not even google knows what a "T6 vane actuator with waste gate" is.
If you pull the intake and cut out the plenum plate and add the wicked wheel 2 ;you’ll get more air and less smoke, FSD cool and change the resistor in the fsd to a higher # you’ll add a little more power.
If you can find them anymore, the A-team turbo is the ONLY turbo for the 6.5 in my opinion. Designed by three die-hard, 6.5 guys, one of them was a steam turbine engineer and had a fully built 1500 6.5 that was very quick, IIRC it was featured on the cover of some diesel mag back, maybe around 2000-2006 something like that. Anyway, that turbo is the ticket for the 6.5. Leroydiesel has some other goodies for the 6.5 too. I think he used to carry the A-team turbo but since I sold my 6.5 (I miss that old truck) I have not stayed in regular contact with them on the forum.
Honestly knowing the 6.5, probably the vacuum pump. More than likely someone let the oil go dry in the pump and is now bad. You could either replace it, or like a lot a 6.5 guys do is run the manual wastegate spring setup. Manual wastegate is definitely not fuel friendly though.
Coal is an indicator of lack of air. and too much fuel. I would be looking over your intake system, check for leaks/torn boots/loose clamps. If that is good, verify injectors aren't leaking down(puddling/dripping). Setup a camera, pull the injectors with the lines still attached and crank it over. Watch the spray patterns.
We need a stack! But only if you are not going to restore the old girl. Maybe a hood stack, then you could film how much it's smoking. Love your content, love the Sunkist. Thanks for all you do.
I sure hope you used Moparts on that Ram. chrysler products are infamous for needing the OEM electronics even for something as simple as a fuel pump or the computers eat themselves (me, I cause them to leak like a seive!). as for the CK? refresh the lights, drop the plow mount unless you need it, and get some beauty rings or center caps on those wheels. it'd be nice to see something STOCK-ish for once. also, i LIKE the stack idea.
Sounds like it's due for injectors. Black smoke means excess fuel, the ECU has probably been over-trimming the injectors the entire time because of the turbo being faulty. So you could start by doing a complete ECU reset and re-learn if the truck allows it, but I feel like injector replacement could be the next step. It was running pretty rough on idle when starting up.
It might be your injectors, if they are clogged or leaking then the truck will smoke, Tuning it will def help the issue and it should be faster and run better. If you really don’t want any smoke, then put a higher flow intake or intake manifold on the truck. You’ll get a bit of power and it’ll burn cleaner. The most likely thing is that your turbo is not big enough, so the truck cannot burn all of that fuel, put a slightly bigger turbo or a compound and you’ll be golden.
With the jeeps ans rams and durangos and others with the same fuel pump. They burn up if you dont keep it submerged in fuel so when he gets it fixed by replacing rhe fuel pump , tell him to try his best to keep a half tank in it or so, that way the pump will live long and cool😊
Dual stacks, one in each front box corner, strait pipe, pipes must be hockey sticks, not just strait up, and also remove the front rack thing. stacks only work on this truck because its a long box so it makes it look ok
i put a wicked wheel on my 6.5 china whirly boi "hx30". had to take comp housing to machine shop because china whirly factory has a 5mm +/- tolerance 😂😂😂. made it a year until i lost a cyl (ironically road-tripping to p/u two dmax (almost long blocks)
You should do a single stack right behind the cab. I had one on my 6.2. I did 2 and 3/4 straight back to the box then into a 5 inch stack and it sounded really sweet lol. I’d highly recommend it but you don’t seem to listen to your suggestions like sunkiss. Nobody said orange in the comments but it’s your truck man you do you.
Put a wicked wheel on it, A k&N filter, 4 inch stacks and dump a whole bottle of hot shot fuel treatment in the tank, raptor line it and sell it !!! Maybe some newer stock wheels if you have some laying around.
I definitely like the engine work videos over the pimp my ride customs videos, both are great, but I appreciate the problem solving of the engine repair.
Need to delete the vacuum pump controlled waste gate & put a mechanical spring waste gate on it, then you can dial in boost better, and make it more reliable.
I bet money it's a fuel pump. I didn't hear anything when he turned the key on. I would definitely check to see if it has fuel pressure and then change the pump.
I just got an AD for American Collectors Insurance that was over 30 seconds long, un-skippable, and then when it ended it stayed on screen with no way to return to your video, i had to close it and start it again.
the generic hx35 with the wicked wheel and 10cm housing was the best all around performance and sound. i tried the "super drag" hx40 with 18cm housing and the truck itself was loud as hell since it had minimal drive pressure.
It has to be performing better, I would love to see a high flow exhaust (or straight pipe lol) I would think the high flow exhaust will help the turbo spool characteristics in a way that both improves power and the black smoke because the black smoke could be unburnt fuel which increasing the boost a hair should help clear out. The OE exhaust might be clogged up anyway.
What’s boost at? The smoke could be from actually not hitting enough boost to burn the amount of fuel being injected into the engine. That’s just a sign that there’s more fuel there than can be completely combusted. Too much fuel or not enough air is where my thoughts are
That turbo is probably just underperforming turn the pump down a little if you can pulling some advance out of it leaning out the top end would keep it happy
Try some internet injector cleaning remedies. Check your fuel pressure. (random thoughts) Straight stacks, if you can get it running clean. If you get to a point that you're not going to invest to get it running better, don't mess with the exhaust. Looking forward to the Dodge fuel issue.
lose the the vacuum system do a manual waste gate build your own check your PDM needs to relocated and right resistor in it thats controls the fueling never any power will clean it up goood luck

That turbo is probably just underperforming turn the pump down a little if you can pulling some advance out of it leaning out the top end would keep it happy
I have a 1998 6.5 with 3 inch straight pipe an seven inch tip an it sounds like a 454 with a glass pack
Put a manual waste gate on the detroit and be done with it. the vacuum system has probably failed.
Oil getting past the seals, the least of your problems is black exhaust, the potential for a runaway diesel is the real concern.
I need some one to work on my diesel ,just don't run right anymore
Do you know how to pit a manual oil pressure gage and keep the electric one for lift pump
Soak and free up the rings. I dont know what kind of PVC System it has but make sure it free flowing and working. Do some home body work.
Black smoke is a sign of a fuel issue, white smoke is more inline with an oil burning.
Hood stack 6.5 dont know if i have seen that before
Try some internet injector cleaning remedies.
Id really like to see you redo that 6.5 be a nice truck to have in the garage
