    I was surprised when they brought back the T-rex in Jurassic World. Especially since her family had been against it.

      @dylanm.6601 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Her family was never really supportive of her before her death nor did they care. They just tried to sue to grab some cash with a sympathetic justification that was just bogus behind the scenes.

    With Tarkin in Rogue One, if you already knew it was CGI then you'd notice. But I knew people who didn't know who Tarkin was or that the actor died decades ago, who just thought he was any other actor. I pointed it out to my brother afterwards and he had no idea he was CGI.

    • @momyour170
      @momyour170 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Batman Jr. I didn’t even know who Tarkin or Cushing were, and I figured it was CG.

    • @nickparadies350
      @nickparadies350 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Batman Jr. I’d say it depends how much CGI you’ve seen. I recognized it immediately.

    • @KRay60
      @KRay60 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Batman Jr. there are details like the face looking somewhat rubbery and the moments of the cheeks and mouth are just a bit excessive, but I think it's cool they actually thought about how the skin on the face pushes and pulls when a person is talking or making an expression

    I also want to add , because they seem to have forgotten, Heath Ledger, but not "The Dark Knight" because that was completed before his death, I am talking about " The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" in which Ledger completed most of his scenes, but after his death, Johnny Deep , Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in and acted in the scenes in which Ledger character enters the Imaginarium.

    • @JamesHenstridge
      @JamesHenstridge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they could have found some stand-ins that looked a bit more like Heath Ledger though. It's like they weren't even trying.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Henstridge Not enough of the movie had been shot for that to work.
      I think Heath Ledger was not very good in the role. They should have reshot it using Jude Law, who showed himself to be perfect for that part.

    • @sam.e.a6422
      @sam.e.a6422 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      James Henstridge that wasn't the point though, they did it that way to add to the dream like aspect of the movie, it adds instead of detracts from the movie

    • @JamesHenstridge
      @JamesHenstridge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you agree that they weren't even trying? :-)

    • @sam.e.a6422
      @sam.e.a6422 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Henstridge no, I am saying there wasn't even a remotely possible chance of the film being salvageable with what they had, so they did a passionate homage to him using close friends

    The weird thing about those Star Wars examples is they hired stand-in actors that they put the CGI over the top of. These actors looked pretty close even without the CGI. Probably would have been less distracting if they'd just used those other actors and not done the CGI stuff. With Leia, they could've just shown the back of her head and you'd still know who she was supposed to be.

    I knew that Tarkin was CGI, and it's not hard to tell in the movie, but I still really liked that he was in the movie simply because of the effort they put into it and the fact that I love the character.

    Mr Sunday Movies seems to know about all media ever. That's why I feel so proud that I know about The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus over James. Its on of the most creative ways they dealt with an actors death, you would think that switching the actor from heath ledger to Jude law was the original intentional.

    MCU has done the best cgi faces so far, with Ant-Man 1986 scene, and GotG2 young Kurt Russell. Young RDJ, not so much.

    • @mk6rfc1
      @mk6rfc1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      none of those guys are dead so that might be why, although young arnold in slavation and genisys proves that isnt always the case

    • @bartistclord1916
      @bartistclord1916 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Proves what now ? that you think having the original old actor play the part with a de-aging overlay IS how it works, but then you realized Arnold proves that your claim from first half of your sentence is wrong ? You proved yourself wrong. congrats.
      Whatever effects team the MCU is employing, that team of effects artists are how it works, and without them, it does NOT work yet.
      To clarify, In My Opinion, the ONLY cgi face recreations that were "good" were MCU, Specifically in Ant-Man and in GotG2, and I can't think of a third example of a "good" job of CGI face of a person we already know and have already seen at the age they are being shown.
      That Rogue One CGI young Leia was creepy bad, and Tarkin looked like he was about to pull his chin up to reveal Ethan Hunt.
      Terminator is not MCU.
      I never implied that they were dead, nor did I imply that terminator or ANYONE else has EVER done a good job with their CGI faces. I felt the the Genysys cgi looked like a video game, A pretty good game, but fell short of looking "real".

    What I find interesting is to me Grand Moff Tarkin was obvious but I thought Leia may have been archived footage. Most other people I know experienced the complete opposite, they thought Peter Cushing was immortal but were freaked out by the Leia CGI. And while I haven't watched the Fast and the Furious movie seeing CGI Paul Walker turn his head at 9:34 gave me motion sickness but James and Mason like that one. It's as if there are different facial aspects people pick up so whether one works is really individualised.

    The scene in the Crow where he comes back to his apartment for the first time after he is brought back from the dead and puts together his Crow outfit and Crow makeup, was done entirely by a body double. To me you can’t tell that Brandon Lee was not in that scene. The film makers did a fantastic job finishing the film.

    He's not dead (...as of August 2018...) but I was always really impressed by the de-age-ification (real word) of Michael Douglas in Ant-man, and no-one talked about it much at the time. I thought they did a really good job there! So yeah I've no doubt they'll eventually nail this technology eventually - and do it so convincingly, we'll never be able to tell...

    I've never really seen them side by side and when I watch Rogue One I have to pay a bit of attention to take note of Tarkins movements and such rather than just staring at the screen braindead. But seeing the clips showing Tarkin in New Hope and cutting immediately to Tarkin in Rogue One prompted a visceral reaction that actually made me recoil.

  • @Gerald5000

    For The Crow, they didn't use a CG Brandon Lee, they just took some footage of him and super-imposed it onto a different set for scenes that hadn't been shot yet, and used a body-double. They also broke his image up for a smashed mirror scene. There was an episode of Movie Magic on it.

    7:48 The Crow is my number one favorite film, and yes they did do a wonderful job with what they had. It's said that the studio already had budget restraints, but they were very fortunate that most scenes were finished with Brandon Lee, they just had to use a stunt double and CGI to finish any last bits needed, which obviously raised the cost of the film. Anyway the make-up also helps and the Brandon's double is only really noticeable in the club, when Eric comes and kills almost everyone, and he does a flip over the table, that is his double. I only know this because of the behind the scenes on the DVD, I think it's on that.

    Even the most lifelike still images of the absolute best CGI will fail to fool people in a lot of circumstances, especially now that people are wise to what ai images can do. The uncanny valley is very shallow now, but it still kind of exists.

    This is weird. Chadwick Boseman died today, so I’m wondering about the future of the Black Panther franchise. Now this video shows up

    • @marshallgregory2936
      @marshallgregory2936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think they might use the digital scan of Chadwick Boseman to help send the character off. My theory is that they might make his sister (Shuri) into the Black Panther, and maybe T'Challa will retire and just be the king. They could get somebody to do a voice, even edit it to sound more like him, and have him past the mantle down to her. That's what I think I would do, so it's respectful and not just killing the character off or replacing him with another actor. If they do decide to recast him though, that's their choice, but I don't think they will.

    You can thank 2010 Tron Legacy for starting CGI actors, with old & young Jeff Bridges. Then we got Michael Douglas in the Ant Man movies, and Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Soon, there won't be elderly characters in movies anymore, since they will all be de-aged for the silver screen.

    Christopher.
    Okay The Hobbit 3 was finished, but I'd love to see him come back. Such an awesome actor. He made the Star Wars prequels watchable.

    I think the part of the problem with CGI people is they give the skin too much detail more than a camera captures on a real person. For proof take a snap of Tarkin from Rogue One and blur out the finer details in his face. It will end up looking a lot more convincing.

    I would have kept Tarkin’s face as just a reflection in the window, and just had Leia seen from the back. They were able to use old recordings of her to recreate her saying Hope.

    Even through youtube's shitty compression that normally makes CGI look worse, the CGI Leia in Rogue One still looks perfect to me. Tarkin, yeah he looks a lot worse in this video than he did on a cinema screen, but Leia still looks like a real person to me

    Have to say what they did with Heath Ledger in The imaginarium of Dr ponassus was really clever. All the scenes outside the imaginarium was Ledger and all the scenes inside went to Drpp, Farrell and Law, they explained this away with ledgers character being special

    The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was Heath Ledger's final film. They go about it by having Jude Law and Johnny Depp play the same character at different times during the film. I thought it was an interesting approach

    As someone who doesn't care for Star Wars or know that actor, that cgi was incredible. It's so good. It's totally plausible that in a few years you will no longer be able to tell what is real or cgi.

    It seems like they are reluctant to emulate the fast twitchy movements real people make with their heads or faces. I'm sure its challenging. Most of the CGI performances have a very slow-paced, gliding, gradual movements to expressions and head which makes them stick out.

    The thing I find off-putting about CGI people is they either have lifeless eyes or overly twitchy eyes. The skin is either overly shiny or plastic like. The mouth movements doesn't match the surrounding skin movements and come off as clayish.
    Tarkin was a good attempt, the eyes had enough movement, with the eyes looking real. The skin texture and blemishes made it look like a real person, the plastic look was missing, which was great, but it was too dark. I am sure they were using darkness to cover up more telltale signs and can be overlooked. However, the most tell-tale sign and made it obvious to me was the mouth movements. The connection between speaking and expression was missing, the more it spoke the less of a connection there was.
    Overall CGI faces are a 7/10 if you throw enough money at the project, they just need to nail the speaking and expression problem.

    I find it weird that everytime I watch Rogue One, the Grand Moff Tarkin CGI get's more realistic as the movie progresses. I definitely detect the CGI when he was first introduced, but by his last scene he looks so real. I don't know if there is indeed a difference of quality or my brain adjusts, but yeah... Tarkin looks more real on the last scenes he was in.
