How to setup a tropical fish community aquarium (Help me decide the next fish!)

  • It has been a while since I set up a bigger aquarium for a mixed community fish tank, so I thought we should show a set up on the larger side of aquariums rather than the smaller aquariums you are used to seeing on the channel. This is the start of getting a few larger aquariums aquascaped on the channel, so watch this space!
Drop into the comments to give us a suggestion on what fish should be next to enter the community.

Kuhlis are so great it would be crazy breeding tank with 50+ lol. I have 10 in my 20G long (76 x 33cm) tank along with; 3 Vampire shrimp, 3 Peacock gudgeons, 7 Otocinclus, 12 Pseudomugil luminatus, and a colony of yellow back neocaridina. The kuhlis are so active all times of the day and they barely use up any bioload since they’re bottom of the food chain.

You mentioned a small gourami. I’d go with honey gourami. They are the funniest little fish, pretty and social and very curious. I have six of them in a 90 gallon community tank with all nano fish so they are my “centerpiece fish” and they really are fun to watch.

Borneo loaches are members of the same family as hillstream loaches, and live in the water in much the same way. Either would be quite fine in this tank. Kuhli loaches seem to be a fan favourite here, and in fact I put both kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches (any sucky loach will do) in my list. We will probably never see the kuhli loaches, since they'll just hide all day between the rocks, and come out at night when Matt's gone to bed. hillstream loaches to keep the rocks in check and some barilioides barbs, good job so far

Hi Matt from Western Australia, have been watching you and Mark for months now and appreciate your videos emensly, as a newbie (may this year) I am on a crash course to knowledge about tropical fish, in fact I scored,my second 5 foot tank this week so I will soon gave 2x 5
(560 litre and 308 litres) footers and a 38 litre tank in my bedroom keeping me company oh the joys of being a single 64 year old my place my rules lol
My suggestion for a second lot of fish for the tank is
    Pearl or lace Gourmi
    Congo Tetras
    Glass bloodfin Tetras
    Harlequin rasbora
    Bristlenose Catfish
    Odessa barbs
    Black Phantom Tetras
    Neon Tetras
That should give you a few ideas maybe
I am running about 15 species in my 560 litre community tank with a heap(maybe 50) of Sailfin Dalmatian Mollies fry swimming in with the adults
In my 38 litre tank I have another 50ish young Mollies as well
    They need re homing asap
Thankyou for all the work and interest you put into your videos it makes it easier to understand what is involved in tropical fish keeping and the realisation that to do so properly takes some effort!
    Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺

Loving your suggestions and I have a few future scapes with some of the fish in mind so watch this space.

Nice video. I'm getting fired up to get back into the hobby. 😊
Love ❤ the way you placed the 3rd large boulder. The placement will prevent the 1st boulder from shifting & mistakenly shattering the tank.
Fish suggestions: African silver clipper barbs, zebra danios, tetras (neon, green & cardinals) Enders livebearers. ❤😊

I'd love to see them too. That's exactly the problem though. They'll find lots of hidie holes in between those rocks, and you'll never see them again unless you go in there after dark.

    Maybe some panda garra

    I love the scape too.

  • @frhaber

I really like this scape. Rummy nose barbs have become one of my favourites. Such intense red and blue colouration, and the sparring between males is so active but non aggressive. I think the tank would benefit from their addition.

    • @gillianmiller9710
      @gillianmiller9710 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

I have never heard of the rummy nose barb. I assumed at first you were speaking of the runny nose tetra. Looked it up and found that it is a native of Burma. It is listed as endangered, so unless tank raised and not wild, I would be hesitant to purchase.

@@gillianmiller9710 Based on the availability and pricing here in Canada, and in the US, I would think they are likely being bred in SE Asia.

I love this scape! The Anubias were the perfect choice. Golden Honey Gouramis would look amazing.

Really like this scape, slightly unusual. Personally I think a black background would've worked better but other than that, love it.

  • @Krishnath.Dragon
    @Krishnath.Dragon 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I think some Banded Gouramis (Trichogaster fasciatus) would give the tank a nice color pop, alternately some Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii).
For catfish, can't go wrong with Cories.

My first choice for the next tank would be a dunkleosteus. For things which are a little more mainline, Hillstream loaches, Kuhli loaches or one of the laser corys, then either apistograma cacatuoides, or an Empire gudgeon. Emperor Keri tetras would be cool too. For the top water, a killifish, such as a gardinari. Also with those huge rocks you have, either a starry night or a cardinal sulawesi shrimp would be a lovely finish, or if you don't mind it hiding in the back where the filter is, a bamboo shrimp or a vampire shrimp would be very interesting. They will be an extra layer of filtering for your tank! Bigger shrimps like that won't get picked to death by your other fish as neocaradina might.

Khuli Loaches and hillstream loach are both top choices for me
Heard a comment md made on a recent video. It doesn't seem like you two are on talking terms. it seemed like he was worried he was going to bump into you at maidenhead, I hope all is good there and you two find some common ground if there are differences between you two be nice to see you two do a collaboration especially since maidenhead are hinting at him scaping the old puffer tank get you two back together to do it would love to see that

    here are my picks
    -any type of cory
-some type of peacful barb (could be snakeskin, odesa, cherry etc.)
-since its a bit larger go for another medium sized schooling fish (congo tetra, rainbowfish etc.)
-Brisslenose pleco or any medium sized pleco
-you could also go for smaller species
-kuhli loaches... they're awesome (If I were you I would remove the pleco if you go for khulis)
